Spring is Close .
Spring must be just around the corner. We have recently
•
received reams of information regarding the upcoming major
league baseball season from the Toronto Blue Jays.
The first of 30 exhibition games goes March 7 in Dunedin,
Florida against the Philadelphia Phillies. This game is one of seven
to be broadcast on the Jays Ontario radio network. As far as we
can ascertain CJCS in Stratford and CHYR in Leamington are the
closest AM stations to carry the Toronto games again this year.

The Jays have entered a team in the Florida State League for
the first time and appropriately enough it will be based in Dunedin,.
the training camp site of the major league team.
They are staying within their system for most of the person-
nel to staff the new team. Ken Carson is the general manager and
the field manager will be Bob Bailor.
. Carson's appointment is rather unusual. He has been the club's
trainer since the team was formed in 1977. His role broadened in
1980 to that of director of team travel in addition to training. Before
that, he was the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins trainer for 10 years.
As for Bailor be was also with the Jays the first year being
the first selection for the'team in the 1976 expansion draft from
the Baltimore Orioles.
Not all of the Blue Jays pre -season games will be played in
Florida. Two tomes will be played in Puerto -Rico against the Pitt-
t:burgh Pirates in the resurrected Robert Clemente Series and the
final game on April 4 will be played in Buffalo, New York with the
Cleveland Indians supplying the opposition.
This will mark the first time the Jays have opposed the Indians
in spring training competition and the first time two major league
clubs have met in Buffalo.
The Jays will go to spring training with three players who were
on the original roster when the club first took to the field on that
snowy afternoon in April of 1977 against the Chicago White Sox.
The most memorable recollection of the first game were the
two home runs hit by Doug Ault who is now a manager of the Jays
top farm team in Syracuse.
The first game is among the many highlights of the first 10
years of the Blue Jays now available as part of 3M Canada's Scotch
videocassette Sports Collector series. The 60 minute video is en-
titled The First Decade: "Mission Impossible".
As an added feature this season, the Blue Jays will play an
exhibition game against the Nippon Ham -Fighters of the Japanese
professional League at Dunedin on Sunday, March 8.
