i For years doctors have told women
who have had Cesarean sections that
they would have to deliver all future
babies the same way. Perhaps this
was based on a rule postulated in 1916
which said• "Once 'a Cesarean,
always a Cesarean". This idea may
have caused the C -Section rate in
Canada to triple between 1970 and
1983. In October, 1985, a nation-wide
committee of obstetricians and other
experts met to consider safe ways to
reduce the number of cesareans be-
ing perfot med in this country. On the
basis of convincing data, they con-
cluded that vaginal birth after_
cesareansection could be safely
recommended to the majority of
women as long as they satisfied cer-
tain • prerequisites. These prere-
quisites Were that they had had a
healthy pregnancy, that they had a
horizontal and not a vertical cut into
their uterus with the previous section,
that they are now carrying a single
baby in the normal head down posi-
• tion. and finally that the reason for
the first section was not a recurring
one. For women who have had two or
more cesarean sections. recent
studies have shown good success
rates with a vaginal birth. but the

in fact. most of the reasons a
cesarean section is done the first time
(10 not tend to repeat themselves the
second time around. These include
prolonged or difficult labour, failure
of the cervix to open up• the baby's
heart rate dropping during labour,
and even the pelvis being too small for
the baby's head.
Vaginal birth after cesarean, also
called VBAC tpronounced VEE -
back i has many distinct advantages
over a repeat cesarean. Since a sec-
tion is a major abdominal surgery. 11
has two to four times the risk to the
mother that a vaginal delivery does.

The February meeting of the after-
noon unit of the Exeter V.C.W. was
opened by the members repeating the
U.C.W. purpose and prayer by the
leader, Olive Thomson.
Cora Miner introduced several new
books now in the library and strong-
ly urged the women to read them.
Members were reminded by

Mary Neil, convener, very ap-
propriately used the ringing of an
alarm clock to open her program. the
theme of which was "Time".
By the use of a skit, dialogue and
quotes both scriptural and secular.
Mary brought out the fact that we
both use and abuse the time which has
been given us. She was helped by
Clara Jackson. Margaret McBride.
Mildred Thomson, Olive Thomson
and Doris Sillery,
as well as the birth of a baby to deal
with, a cesarean mother has to cope
with more pain and weakness follow-
ing delivery.
Moreover, some doctors may fail to
realize the devastating impact a C-
section may have on a women emo--
tionally and psychologically. As
delighted as women are to have their
babies safe and sound. they often feel
a confusing mixture of shock and
deep disappointment after the sec-
tion. A woman may grieve for her Toss
of control, her loss of the experience
of a normal birth, her loss of team-
work with her mate during labour,
and the loss of early contact with.her
baby.
For most women, the opportunity to
have a normal birth after a cesarean
is an enormously gratifying and heal-
ing experience and should be all(' '
ed if at all possible.
Women considering VBAC should
