ARE YOU A CANADIENS FAN? — Danny Gallivan gets a very
positive reply when he asks Trevor Taylor of his allegiance to the
Montreal Canadiens at Tuesday's Sportsmen's dinner.
JUNIOR HOCKEY SIGNEES -- Dave Mcllwn and Brendon
Shanahan of the Canadian junior hockey team sign autographs for
Steve Farquhar and Derek Beckett at Tuesday's Sportsmen's dinner.
Springstead who kept the crowd in
laughter with his versions of many
happenings on the diamond including
his many encounters with former
Baltimore Orioles manager Earl
Weaver.
The most applause was given to the
five men representing the game of
hockey. They were ex -Montreal Cana -
diens announcer Danny Gallivan,
former Toronto Male Leafs Darryl
Sittler and Bill Harris and two
members of the Canadian junior team
Dave Mcllwain and Brendon
Shanahan.
Gallivan who has a photographic
memory of many of the incidents dur-
ing his 32 years in the broadcast booth
for the Montreal NIIL team said he
was fortunate to be working with such
an exciting team.
Of today's players he said very few
knew how to give or take a pass pro-
perly. He referred to the way Jean
Belliveau could feed the perfect, soft
and feathery pass to Ivan Cournoyer
when he was in high gear.
In idividual categories, Gallivan
listed Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky
as the best players he had ever seen,
Gretzky as the most intelligent,
Rocket Richard as the most exciting
and Gordie Howe as amazing, pro-
ductive and durable.
Gallivan continued, "I have been to
a lot of dinners like this in the past
three years and have never seen as
many boys and girls in attendance."
Darryl Sittler told of his close rela-
tionship in establishing Ronald
McDonald houses across Canada.
These homes are located close to
children's hospitals and provide ac-
commodation for parents staying
near their children.
Sittler added, "I was close to Terry
Fox and he was a great inspiration to
me. Dinners like this prove people
take time to give to somebody. These
acts change people's lives. We often
get too busy in our own selfish gains.
Sittler is best remembered for scor-
ing six goals and adding four assists
in a 1976 11-4 win over Boston.
Seaforth native Dave Mcllwain said
it was the thrill of a lifetime to play
Canada's junior team. About the in-
famous incident to close out Canada's
part in the world tournament Mcll-
wain said "We had no choice and the
decision by the World Hockey Federa-
tion was hasty and harsh."
Mcllwain recalled winning a trophy
for scoring three goals in a novice
tournament in Exeter when he played
minor hockey.
Breedon Shanahan, also of the
Canadian junior team said," I won't
belabour the incident with the
Soviets." Shanahan, only 18 years of
age and a star with the London
Knights is expected to be the second
overall selection in this June's NHL
