E ETER 235-2202 Storm cuts Zurich hydro As I'm writing this column it's stor- ming outside (Sunday afternoon), the hydro has all . ready been off since 12:30 p.m. and it's now almost 4:30 p.m. By the sound of the battery- operated radio on the cupboard, it's not going to be on for awhile yet. Valentine's party On Friday, February 13, the grade 4 pupils are putting on a little -Valen- tine's party at St. Boniface School for the senior citizens, which will include a few games, some entertainment and refreshments. It will take place in the gym at 10:30 a.m. Parish dance St. Boniface is having their annual parish dance on Saturday, February 14, a Valentine Sweetheart Dance at the Zurich arena beginning at 9:00 p.m. with the.music supplied by "Hite Spot" from Woodstock. Ladies are asked to bring sandwiches for lunch. Admission is $8.00 per couple, at the door. Correction The weekend for Marriage En- counter (both men and women) will be April :3 to 5. Phone 438-7545. RuraL.l.ife conference Congratulations to Harold (Tiny ) This Saturday the monthly meetiTfg--.and-Vera Thiel -on the- occasion_ of_ of the Catholic Rural Life Conference will take place at St. Peter's Seminary in London at 9:00 a.m for the executive and 11:00 a.m. for the general members. Last Tuesday some members went to St. Luke's Parish in Downeyville to help start up C.R.L.C. in the Peterborough Diocese. Ski trip 1-' local students from enjoyed going on rein last Wedne- Auxiliary marks 20th birthd.ay7 Perhaps we became a little too complacent with the Florida -like weather that we enjoyed during most of the winter, and suddenly everything came to a standstill when the storm blew and hydro failed. Luckily, the rest home and adjoining apartments have the support of a generator for heating purposes and partial lighting and the kitchen is equipped with propane stoves. ifowever, Maplewoods was not so for- tunate, as were many other apart- ment dwellings and private homes which did not respond to the little black buttons we so depend upon. The movies shown on Monday even- ing were "Puppy's Amazing Rescue"' and "Swiss Family Robinson", followed by refreshment. On Tuesday evening, the Ladies Auxiliary of the home celebrated the 20th anniversary of their inception. Mr. Bob Heywood and Mr.- Paul Klemke of Exeter provided music during the evening. Miss Verda Baechler and Marlene . Gingerich presented a thought-provoking and comical skit reminiscing on the years spent as Auxiliary members. Several numbers were sung by the quartette of Mary Lou Erb, Ina Neeb, Mary Gingerich and Margaret Gingerich accompanied on the piano by Grace Martin. .Mrs. Meda O'Brien spoke on how the Auxiliary came into being and on some of the uphill problems en- countered in organizing and trying to raise funds for the_empty coffers dur- ing the period from 1967 to 1977. Mrs. Cecilia Farwell spoke on the organization and the growth and all the accomplishments of the Auxiliary over the years to the present time. Following the program, refreshments were served to the residents and guests which included a beautifully decorated anniversary cake made by Miss MaryLou Erb. • About people you know Congratulations to Lee and Rose Kegler who are celebrating their 39th wedding anniversary, Wednesday, February 11. The couple spent the weekend in London with their family. Sev S.H.D.H. a three-day ski trip day to Friday in Collingwood to Blue Mountain and they reported having a real good time with perfect weather and skiing conditions. New arrivals Congratulations to Shelly and Bil- ly Hay on the arrival of a baby boy born on February 4 and also to his sister Kim and Ron Crete on the ar- rival of their son on February 7. Ross Johnston is a patient in University Ilospital due to a knee operation. Noel LaPorte visited last week with his son. Charlie and Marie LaPorte in London. Jerome and Marie Denomme recently attended the baptismal of their granddaughter. Jessica Denomme in Sarnia. daughter of Renee and Scott Denomme on January 25. Marie was also'her moTEF and -NW -fir -other Todd was godfather. Marie has also been busy babysitting in London at her daughter Marlene's and family and spent the last two weeks in Sarnia at Ron and Diane Denomme's while they went on holidays to Florida. Rick and Karen Masse spent a cou- ple of days in thud Stales last week. fSt. Boniface Upbeat The operetta is coming up slowly but surely. Grades 5. 6, 7 and 8 are busy learning songs and lines. Jack and the Beanstalk will be performed on March 11. 1987 al 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $2.00 each and are available at Sl. Boniface School. The operetta this year will be truly enjoyable. The pine tar and the syax came out for a cross country ski tri e - $ the Pinery (Grand Bend ). Grades 5 6.7 and 8 skiied'all day February 5. Also on February 5, Mother Goose Nursery Rhymn characters came to life as the kindergartens dressed up their favorite character to have a Mother Goose reunion. Parents were invited too. St. Boniface students will be doing some bowling at the Town and Coun- try Bowling Lanes as part of their physical education program. They will be going on the following dates: Februrary 11, 12,18, 25 and March 4. Grades kindergarten, 1, -2, 3, 4. 5 and 6 went to Precious Blood School_ inExeter to see a play - The Tale of the Blue Dragon - on Wednesday, February 4. They spent last Thursday in town visiting with friends. Jennifer Mittleholtz, who was four years old on Saturday, February 7 had a little birthday party with five friends coming for lunch. Joe and Marilyn Kenda Jr. and Joe and Carol Rau recently enjoyed spen- ding two weeks in Florida and came back with nice tans. Mrs. Emma Schilbe along with her son, Earl and Frances Schilbe return- ed home last week after a nice three- week vacation in Florida in Green Acres Campsite in Planet City. Bingo was played on Thursday evening followed by refreshments. We regret that Mrs. Margaret Adams is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. Mrs. Violet Dunn has returned much improved from University Hospital, London. We are grateful to the G.S.M. girls' group of the Zurich Mennonit Church for the cheery valentine plac mats gracing the dining -room tables. The Sunday evening chapel service was cancelled due to the unsafe travelling conditions.
