However, growing attention has been apid to eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia) over the last 10-15 years, as more and more young people turn to bizarre eating habits to try to control their weight. Over nine- ty percent of eating disorder sufferers are girls and women. Anorexics and bulimics share a common concern - a phobia of becom- ing fat. The anorexic usually has the control to maintain a rigid diet and may also use excessive exercise or purging techniques ( vomiting, lax- ative abuse) after eating even a small amount of food. The bulimic habitual- ly (sometimes several. times daily) overeats, panics and tries to find a way to get rid of unwanted calories. She will usually vomit the undigested food, may take large doses of lax- atives (which doesn't work since calories are absorbed in the small bowel and laxatives have their effect in the large bowel) and will 'From your Valentine' Times -Advocate, February 1 1, 1987 Page 7 Became symbol of love day Of the many facts and fables sur- rounding St. Valentine's Day, none is more misunderstood than the most important of all -- the factual history of St. Valentine himself. The phrase, "From Your Valen- tine", became the everlasting symbol of friendship, affection and sharing with others that is practised by young and old alike each anniversary of the priest's execution. The story of these early Christians is a vital part of a celebration which has borrowed from many customs over the centuries. Others which PLAN 'EVENTS According to history, Valentinus ( the Latin form was thrown in a dungeon. His jailer, Asterius, was not i overly harsh, but the priest still had only the barest necessities in life. After a year in jail. Valentinus was summoned to appear before Claudius 11. The emperor was so impressed by the young priest's dignity thathe at- tempted to convert him to the Roman gods, thus saving him from execution. Valentinus however, refused lu to re- nounce Christianity and, perhaps im- prudently, attempted on the spot to convert the emperor to Christianity. • Claudius was furious at this brave attempt and ordered that St. Valen- tine be beaten with clubs, storied and executed. In the waning days of his life the priest, through his faith. was credited with restoring the sight of the jailer's daughter. He also converted Asterius and the girl to Christianity, an act which later brought ontheir own ex- ecution by Claudius. Most girls who suffer from eating- disorders are bright, talented young women who do well at school, but who come to see themselves as failures. The demands placed on them are too great and their illnessis a cary for help. People with eating disorders are at the opposite end of the spectrum from that of .obese people -- but both use food to cope with emotional problems. Anorexics and bulimics need profes- sional help to cope with their disorder. If you know of someone with this pro- blem, urge them to see their family doctor.
