Under the direction of the Tyndall schools the youngsters registerinee for the eight week course will learn the art of karate. The aim of the karate course is to teach self defence, discipline, training for competition or just for the social and 'recreational atmosphere. The instructor will be Dan Bell of town who has been involved in karate for a number of years' and holds a green belt. Ron Tyndall is in his second year of twice weekly karate, ses- sions at the South Huron Rec Centre for adults and teenagers and the program ha's proved very successful. First of the eight weekly sessions will begin Saturday, February 14 between the hours of 10:30a.m. and 11:30 a.m: Those wishing to participate must pre -register at the Rec Centre during office hours before Friday, February 6. The classes will be held in the new gym at South Huron District High School. Entrance is to be made through the cafeteria door at the north end of the school. While talking about winter events at the Rec Centre several others are all set for late in February. Rec director Lynne Farquhar repojt that the annual sno-pitch` tournament is scheduled for Saturday, February 21 and she ex- pects 12 teams will participate. This is a game of slo-pitch usually under snowy weather condi- tions, thus the name sno-pitch. It's classes as a mixed tourney so each team is required to have at least five ladies on the field at all times defensively and to have the ladies 'dispersed evenly throughout the lineup. . Win two on ice, one by protest M The following afternoon on Sunday, February 22, officials of the Exeter figure skating club are planning their annual carnival when most of the more than 100 members get a chance to display their skating skills. This show is one of the big fund raising endeavours of the figure skating club and a good attendance is hoped for. Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh A recreational men's hockey tournament sponsored by the Ex- eter Inn-dians is set for the weekend of February 27 and 28 and March 1. Dinner chairman Brian Iliman has been working hard at organiz- ing the event and assuring an attractive lineup of speakers. At the moment the top attractions appear to be former Montral Canadiens broadcaster Danny Gallie -an, ex Toronto Maple Leaf Darryl Sittler and former major league baseball umpire Marty Springstead. for youngsters. Local and Western Ontario flavour has been added by Exeter native Al McLean who Is a top world judge in the art of jujitsu and Dave Mcllwain and Brendon Shanahan, both members of the Cana- dian junior hockey team involved in the recent fiasco in Europe. A few tickets are still available from any member of the Exeter Lions and the price remains at $35 for adults and $20 for students - and children. The admission for a similar dinner in London the night before with virtually the same guests is now $60. Here's your chance to not only enjoy listeningo and talking with many of your favourite sports celebrities, but, All proceeds go to the Crippled Children's Treatment Centre in London and also to help handicapped young people in this area. Younger legs won out Saturday's exhibition game between the 1976 Exeter junior Hawks champions and the Exeter Molting Hawks oldtimers prov- ed that legs do count in the game. The Molting Hawks who range in age from 37 to 60 stayed with . the Hawks of 10 years ago for the.tirst period and then youth ap- peared to win out. The current age of the juniors. would now be between 27 and 29. This game also brought about a first in Exeter hockey history. Announcements of scores and penalties on the public address system were done in bilingual fashion for the first time. Saturday night in Palmerston the Mohawks drubbed the 81's by a score of 9-3 and Sunday afternoon doubled the score 6-3 on the Ilarriston Hues. The third victory came without tak- ing to the ice. The OIIA executive upheld a Mohawks protest of a January 5 loss in Tavistock when the Royals used an unregistered player. The Exeter club was awarded two points. the Tavistock team was fined $100 -and coach Don Burton__ was suspended for two games. The Mohawks will be in Elora Fri- day night at 8:30 p.m. to meet the -Rocks and will be at home Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. at the South Huron. Hat Trick for Kernick In Palmerston Saturday, John Ker - nick fired three successful shots to lead the Mohawks to victory. 'l'he former St. Marys Lincoln scored one of the two Exeter goals in the opening period on a three-way passing combination with Bill Glover and Barry Baynham and Doug Latta converted a pass from Brian Mercer. The second session was less than two minutes old when- Scott Eccles made the score :3-0 for the Mohawks as he hit on passes from Cam Doig and Barry Baynham. Near the midway mark. Ron Elliott registered with assists going to AI Gates and Cam Doig. In the last five minutes John Kernick quickly com- pleted his hat trick performance. Cap- t: -in Randy Kraut assisted on both scores and single asists went to Ron Elliott and Pat Cyr. In the final 21 minutes of play. Cam Doig, Ron Elliott and Pat 'Cyr were the marksmen for the Mohawks. Doig also picked up an assist along with Randy Kraut, Bill'Glover, Cam Doig, M Gates and Barry Baynham. The 22 penalties with 12 going to the Mohawks had no effect on the scoring. The referee was Laurence Raye Louis Arts was in the Exeter goal to get the win. first place lead Two tower Play Scores In Sunday's game referee Lee Rodgers called only 14 penalites. In the first contest. the Generals were defeated 8-4 by Ridgetown and, Sunday they scored a close 8-7 victory over Forest. Forest scored again seven seconds later, but the Generals were , able to hang on for the win. In the first period, the .Generals jumped ahead 4-1 is Jeff Dalrymple notched a pair of markers and Dar- ryl McCann and Jeff Kints notched singles. Bryan Quinn provided a pair of assists and Dalrymple, McCann, Rob Taylor and Tim . Moore each helped set up ohe score. In the middle frame Steve Lingard converted passes from Jeff Hoffman and Jeff Kints and in the third period before the game winning scores, Jim Dickins scored on passes from Bryan • .Quinn and Bill Vandeworp. Rick Pikul was in the Exeter nets and came up with a number of key saves to pave the way to victory.
