Hawks get lots of goals, but give up more
The Exeter Hawks scored 16 goals
in a pair of weekend games but still
managed only a split as they allowed
the opposition 19 tallies.
Friday night, the Hawks travelled
to play their namesakes in Mitchell
and were bombed 12-8, but they
regrouped to eke out a come -from -
behind 8-7 win rUrp,- the rlinton
Mustangs on the latter's ice, Sunday.
That victory moved the Locals back
into third place in the northern stan-
dings, one point ahead of the Seaforth
Centenaires, and one point behind the
second -place Mitchell crew.
It also moved the Hawks 12 points
ahead of the last place Mustangs and
gives them a comfortable margin in
the race for a playoff position.
The Hawks have only nine games
left on the schedule, including last
night's return match in Mitchell.
They'll be at home to the Centenaires
on Friday and travel to Clinton again
on Sunday for a re -match against the
Mustangs.
Three- of the other games are
against the first place Brussels Bulls
and they have two February meetings
with the Centenaires and another with
the Mustangs. Six of the nine games
will be on the road as the Hawks hat-
tle for the second position with Mit-
chell and Seaforth.
Come from behind
Trailing 5-3 after two periods in
Clinton, Sunday, the Hawks battled
back with five goals in the final period
to post their 8-7 triumph.
They had the game knotted at 5-5
before five minutes had been played
in the final stanza, but then fell behind
7-6 before the midway mark and had
to rally again to stop the stubborn
hosts.
Jeff Ansems scored on a powerplay
marker at the 12:57 mark to pull the
teams even and Steve Gould fired the
winner with just under two minutes
to go on a play with George Pratt.
It was Gould's third marker of the
contest.
Jeff Pfaff contributed a pair of
tallies and singles in addition to
Ansem's came from the sticks of
Pratt and'Jlim Lewis.
Pratt finished the game with three
assists, while Pfaff, Jeff Dalrymple
• and Gould 'had a pair each. Con-
tributing single assists were Ansems,
Dave Cassone, Sean Whiteford and
Scott Lovie.
Brad Bender played the first period
between the pipes and gave up three
goals on eight shots. Derek Switzer
finished the game and allowed four
goals on 20 shots.
Marty Merner, the former Hawk,
was the busiest man of the ice as he
kicked out 52 of the 60 shots the Hawks
peppered at him in the game they
dominated.
Hawks prolific
The Mitchell Hawks padded their
scoring statistics.on Friday as they
put 12 pucks behind the Exeter net -
minding duo of Fred Gregus and
Derek Switzer.
The hosts took a 5-3 lead in the first
and were never headed.
They scored three times on the
powerplay, while Exeter had four
with a man advantage.
George Pratt fired two successful
shots for Exeter with singles record-
ed by Jon O'Connor, Steve Gould,
Scott Lovie, Sean Whiteford,Steve
Batten and Jim Lewis.
Gould helped out on three markers
to lead in that department,- while
Whiteford, Pratt and Lovie had two
each. Contributing single assists were
Jeff Dalrymple and Dave Cassone.
Gregus gave up six goals on the 16
shots he faced before being replaced
by Switzer early in the second. The
latter also gave six goals on 21 shots.
Steve Stapleton kicked out 39 shots
forthe.winners.
Irish back in first place chase
The Lucan Irish are right back in
the race for first place in the OHA
Western Junior 'D' south grouping.
On home ice Wednesday night the
Irish got past the Thamesford Trojans
by a score of 6-4 and Saturday in Bel-
mont edged the league leading
Bombers 5-4.
Ch i pchases best
in shuffleboard
The Chipchase family dominated
the prize winners in the three•days of
shuffleboard this week at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
Ernie Chipchase was the men's
winner on Tuesday and Wednesday
and his wife Olga was best for the
ladies, also on Wednesday.
Tuesday's winning score for Chip -
chase was 339. Next came Steve
Hrapchak 314 and Charles Hendy 306.
Best for the ladies were Mildred
Thomson 314, Helen Wasnidge 259 and
Marjorie Hodgert 258.
Wednesday's high score for the
men for five games was Ernie Chip -
chase at 465 followed by John Pepper
342 and Delmar Skinner 335. A 358 by
Olga Chipchase was tops for the
ladies. Others were Edna Caldwell 288
and Leona Hern 281.
Top four game scores Wednesday
were Phil Hern 319, Meine Eizenga
312, Walter Davis 226, Iva Blair 294,
Olive Essery 254 and Mildred Thom-
son 252.
In Thursday's competition for the
men the best sixgame scores were
Phil Vern 633, Meine Eizenga 623 and
Walter Johns 464 while five game
scores were Howard Johns 538, John
Eberle 528 and Ross Richardson 476.
For the ladies Marjorie Richardson
recorded a six game score of 564 and
tops for four games was Olive Essery
at 396.
The two recent wins give the Irish
a season total of 44 points, only one
back of the Belmont Bombers.
With only 10 games remaining in
the schedule tonight, Wednesday's
game in Lucan between the two top
contenders looms as a battle for the
league championship. Game time is
8:15 p.m.
Win in Last Minutes
A goal by Paul Barnes on passes
from Brad Hodgins and Paul Deplan-
cke with less than two minutes to go
in the third period to give the Irish
Saturday's narrow win over Belmont.
The first period was all even with
Ron Goodhand converting a pass
from Jesse Crawford for Lucan with
Brad Beattie replying for the
Bombers.
In the middle frame the Irish mov-
ed ahead on successful shots by Grana,
Larsen, Brad Hodgins and Jesse
Crawford. Joe Febrey assisted on two
goals while Brad Muir, Todd Hayter
and Paul Barnes each helped set up
PANTHERS WIN
The Exeter RSD Panthers gained
three points in.. two Lambton-
Middlesex novice house league
hockey games this week.
The Panthers played to a 2-2 tie
with Ilderton and scored a 4-1 victory
over the Exeter III club.
In the tie with Ilderton Geoff Vann
scored on an .unassisted effort and
Bryce Hann converted a pass from
Geoff Maver.
Ryan Beckett paced the Panthers .
scoring attack against the other Ex-
eter club with a two goal perfor-
mance. Getting assists were Scott
Rasenberg and Rob Turner.
'The other successful shooters were
Andrew Hern and Geoff Hann with
assists going to Geoff Maver and Rob
Turner.

NOVICE III LOSE
The Exeter III novice hockey team
dropped a 4-3 dgcision this week to
Parkhill.
Captain Bryon Ellerington was fhe
top scorer for the locals with a two
goal performance. One came on an
unassisted effort and the other on a
pass from Scott Inson.
The other Exeter goal was
registered by Rob Lynn on a three
way passing combination with Willy
Partridge and David Farquhar.
PETITE RINGETTE
Saturday the Exeter petite ringette
team hosted the undefeated Mitchell
team. The Exeter girls came closteto
a win, only losing 5-3.
- The goals were scored by Cara
Gardner, Jill Sararas and Carrie
Simpson. Assists were credited to
Janice Sanders, Jill Sararas and ('ara
Gardner.
This Saturday the Exeter Petites
host the Iluron Park Petites in Ilen
sall at 3:15 p.m.

Bill Horlick tallied for Belmont in
the middle session and Paul Gilks and
Mark Rinker hit in the third period to
tie the score and set the stage for the
winner by Barnes.
Power Plays Help
Four of the Irish goals in Wednes-
day's win over Thamesford came
while enjoying power play
advantages.
Jesse Crawford counted the first ex-
tra man score in the first period on
passes from Joe Febrey and Ron
Goodhand. Also hitting the opposing
net in the first 20 minutes of play was
Brad Muir with a pair of successful
shots. Wayne Urbshott helped set up
both and Brant Larsen and Crawford
drew single assists.
The next two power play scores oc-
curred in the second period from the
sticks of Urbshott and Larsen.
Credited with assists were Scot
Denomy, Bob Thirlwall and Brad
Muir.
In the final session again with a
man advantage Grant Larsen notch-
ed his second of the night on passes
provided by Urbshott and Thirlwall.
Broncos get
impressive win
The Exeter Broncos opened the On-
tario Minor Hockey Association atom
CC round robin playoffs in impressive
style with a Sunday 8-2 victory over
Forest.
The Broncos are involved in the
round robin playoffs with Lambeth,
Forest and Ridgetown. The locals will
be in Lambeth tonight, Wednesday.
The first period was all even as Joel
Campbell registered for the Broncos
on an unassisted effort and Scott
McEwen replied for Forest.
Three straight second period goals
pretty well clinched the victory for
the Broncos. Campbell scored his se-
cond without help, Steve Farquhar
registered on passes from Gavin Snell
and Jeff Lingard and Lingardhit the
Forest net with assists going to Far-
quhar and Campbell on a power play
attempt.
In the third period Joel Campbell
competed his hat trick for the game
and Mark Brintnell was successful.
Both were on unassisted dashes.
To complete the Broncos
marksman Ian Jean converted a pass
from Joel Campbell and ,Derek
Beckett tallied with passing help from
Farquhar and Campbell.

Good week for SH
basketball
The three boys basketball teams at
South Huron District high school were
very successful in six Huron -Perth
Conference games this week.
Against St. Marys, the South Huron
seniors scored an easy 85-59 victory,
the juniors won by a score of 55-41 and
the midgets were on top of a 66-32
count.
In a tripleheader against Central
Huron of Clinton, the senior Panthers
won 79-65, the midgets reigned 45-32
and the only loss was in the junior
contest by a score of 42-32.
Scott Miller led the seniors in the
scoring department with 30 points
against St. Marys and 38 points in the
Clinton contest. In each game Chris
Pearen was the runnerup with 26 and
31 points respectively.
Rob Pearen's 18 points were high
for the locals in the loss to Clinton and
in the win over St. Marys led with 22
points while Jim Dickins checked in
with 12 points.
Doug Clarke and Dave O'Connor
each netted 16 points in the midgets
win over St. Marys and the best
against Clinton were Jason Clarke
with'a dozen points and Dave O'Con-
nor with eight to his credit.

first playoff
The Exeter pee wees started this
year's Ontario Minor Hockey
Association round robin playoffs
Wednesday by playing a 4-4 tie with
Ridgetown.
The locals -are involved in a round
robin series with Ridgetown,
Lambeth and Forest. Lambeth will be
in Exeter tonight. Wednesday at 6:30
p.m. and the two clubs return to
Lambeth for an 8 pin. contest on
January 28. A home and home series
with Forest goes in Exeter January
31 and in Forest on February 5. The
return game in Ridgetown is set for
February 6. •
It took two goals in the. last 28
seconds of play to get Wednesday's
draw with Ridgetown. With the
visitors ahead 4-2 going into the last
minute of play, David Schwindt cut
the Exeter deficit by completing a
three-way passing combination with
Steve Dubarry and Brett Lammie.
With the clock running down to
three seconds, Jason Bern squared
the score on passes from Schwindt
and Dubarry.
Steve Dubarry notched the first two
Exeter goals with assists going to Joel
Campbell. Jason Heywood and Jim
Ahrens.

seniors won by a 67-46 score and the
juniors were on the short end of a 46-34
count.
Scott Miller with a 30 point total was
high with Chris Pearen getting 22
points. Rob Pearen's 22 point output
was best for the juniors.
In a College Avenue tournament in
Woodstock, the South Huron juniors
defeated Parkhill 52-27 and lost 52-23
to College Avenue and 59-44 to Strat-
ford Central.
Juniors of '76
back in action
The Exeter Molting Hawks were
able to keep up to the 1976 champion-
ship version of the Exeter junior
Hawks for the first period in Satur-
day's exhibition game and then the
younger legs prevailed.
The Molting Hawks, an oldtimers
team composed of players more
than 35 years of age won a game in
London earlier in the day.
The only goal of the first period was
fired by Matt Muller of the juniors on
a pass from Kim McKinnon.
Most of the junior championship
team of 10 years ago were back for
Saturday's encounter under the direc-
tion of coach Ron Bogart. Bob Drum-
mond was also back looking after the
training need of the players.
In the middle period, John Van
Gerwen, Fred Mommersteeg and
Brian Taylor were successful for the
juniors. Assisting were Phil Knight,
Ken Pinder, Jim Ferguson, Gerald
Weido and Rick Ingram.
Bill Chipchase counted the first
score for the oldtimers.
Gerald Weido counted two goals in
the final 15 minutes of play for the -
junior club with Brian Taylor, Tom
Hayter and John Van Gerwen adding
single markers.
Third period assists for the juniors
were picked up by Rick Ingram,
Gerald Weido, Steve Jennison and
Ken Pinder.
To complete the oldtimers scoring
Bill Chipchase converted a pass from
brother Jack and Bob McDonald was
successful on an unassisted effort.
The three stars as chosen by cur-
rent junior Hawks manager Dan
Brintnell were Glenn Stire who stop-
ped a barrage of shots in the Molting
Hawks net and Gerald Weido and
John Van Gerwen of the juniors.
The older generation thought nothing
of getting up at 5 a.m. The younger
generation doesn't think much of it.
