Outbreaks of rabies can be ex-
pected in a number of Eastern and
Southwestern Ontario areas next
year, provincial wildlife and health
officials say.
Huron County is included on the list.
High-risk areas, or those where
there is at least a 75 -per -cent pro-
bability of an outbreak, include the
Ottawa -Carleton region, Leeds, Gren-
ville, Stormont, Dundas and
Glengarry counties, the natural
resources ministry said Friday.
Other sttch high-risk areas are
Wellington, Waterloo, Perth, Oxford,
Brant and Elgin counties.
Ministry spokesman Charles
Maclnnes said areas that experienc-
ed severe outbreaks of rabies in the
last few years - such as Simcoe,
Hastings and Prince Edward counties
- will be relatively safe for the next
few years because the fox and skunk
population has already been ravaged
there.
It takes two or three years for the
foxes and skunks to repopulate to the
extent that there will be another out-
break among them.
Dr: Charles Le Ber, a veterinary
consultant with the health ministry,
said 3,462 people were treated for
rabies in Ontario during the first 10
months of this year, a 97 -per -cent in-
crease from 1985.
I would uphold the law if for no other
reason but'to protect myself.
