Season's
Greetings
83 Oxford St.
Hensall
Special services at. U.C.
December 14 proved to be a very
busy Sunday at Hensall United
Church. Not only was there a morn-
ing worship but a special evening ser-
vice was also held. During the morn-
ing worship the sacrament of Holy
Communion was observed with Rev.
Picket! of Goderich assisting
minister, Mr. George Cowan. Many
thanks to Rev. Pickett.
As the congregation stood to sing
the hymn "Gentle Mary Laid Her
Child", the children came forward for
their time with the minister. As the
youngsters sat around him, Mr.
Cowan reviewed the meaning of ad-
vent and the importance of the advent
wreath. Then, after asking if there
were any families present with three
members (and there were several!).
He selected the McGee girls, Jen-
nifer, Jodie and Jaime, to light the
three purple candles. Mr. Cowan then
told a story using songs about the im-
portance of love at Christmastime
after which the students left for their
classes.
Following the children's time, Mur-
ray McGregor, member of the Com-
municaitons .and Mission Outreach
Committee, very ably read the
Minutes for Missions. Congratula-
tions Murray on a job welFdone! Mr.
Cowan's message entitled "Living the
Sacrament" proved to be another
very thought provoking sermon.
Helve Fuss led us in the Ministry of
Music and the choir members, who
are becoming more plentiful all of the
time, sang the very appropriate an-

them "Let Us Break Bread
Together".
After the service, a Fellowship
Morning was observed with everyone
gathering downstairs for a warm
drink and some nut loaf. The Sunday
school students had been asked by the
Centennial Committee to stay after
church for their first rehearsal for the
upcoming Old Fashioned Christmas
pageant on December 21. There was
much activity and some confusion but
everything should be well in hand by
the next practice which is on Satur-
day. December 20 at 8 a.m.
The evening service, known of-
ficially as The 1986 C.G.I.T. National
Vesper Service, went oft'beautifully.
The girls are to be commended for
their hard work. The service began
with Debbie Wood beautifully playing
a medley of Christmas songs on the
piano as group leaders Linda Tra-
quair and Sue Stephens carefully lit
the numerous candles placed around
the front of the sanctuary.
Then the lights were dimmed for an
effect which was truly wondrous.
Linda Traquair welcomed the good-
sized crowd to the service and en-
couraged everyone to stay for
fellowship afterwards. A short skit
with Amy Campbell, Lorena Fink and
Cara Powell began the service. This
was followed by the processional
hymn "0 Come All Ye Faithful" dur-
ing which the C.G.I.T. members
came into the sanctuary each holding
a lit red candle under glass. It was a
very pretty scene. When the hymn
was completed, the girls blew out
their candles and quietly left the
sanctuary.
Group president, Jennifer Selwood,
and leader, Linda Traquair, then led
the service. The drama entitled "Let
Us Go To Bethlehem" outlined the
Christmas story and the various,ef-
fects that the birth of Jesus had on the
people at the time. The girls involv-
ed in the play were: Brenda Neeb-
servant; Karen Hartman -Mary; Sue
Stephens- Joseph; Liana
Goldsworthy -Angel; Karie-Sue Kyle,
Mary .Taylor and Tracy Maxwell -
Shepherds; and Angela Gould, Cara
Powell and Lorena Fink -Wise Men.
During the play, the Junior choir,
under the fine direction of Mrs. Wood,
sang "How Far Is It To Bethlehem"
and "Baby Boy". Later on, they sang
the anthem "Sing Hosannah, Sing
Hallelujah" which highlighted 'the
feeling of happiness for the season. Its
clear that the hard work of the choir
is paying off with large dividends.
During the candlelighting
.ceremony, Amy Campbell, Jennifer
Selwood and Sue Stephens gave
thanks as they each lit a candle. Then,
Peggy Campbell (Amy' mother)
came forward from the congregation
and gave thanks for the C.G.I.T. as
-she lit her own candle. The service
concluded with the hymn "Joy To The
World". As the people left the sanc-
tuary each person was given a gift
handmade by one of the girls. Some
of these were Christmas tree or-
naments saying "Merry Christmas"
and others were pretty handstitched
doves. Parents, grandparents and
friends then met in the candlelit
fellowship hall for refreshments.
Evelyn Elder and Barb Gackstetter
made sure everything here went
smoothly. The Explorers under the
guidance of Shirley McAllister and
Marg Cole did a very fine job of usher-
ing. Well done!
Next Sunday is another big day in
our church with it being Christmas
Sunday and our Old Fashioned
Christmas concert being planned for
the evening (beginning at 7:30 p.m.).
This is expected to be great fun for
everyone young and old. So plan to
come and bring a friend!
SH Youth for Christ
South Huron Youth for Christ held
the December rally at Brucefield
school on December 6 with 200 in at-
tendance. Director Ron Westlake
opened the rally with the singing of
"Standing on the Promises" and
several choruses followed by prayer.
Quiz teams then quizzed on I John
2, 7-29 with the results Clinton first,
Goderich second and Exeter third. At
the January rally they will quiz on I
John 3.
The January rally will be in the
form of a talent night with talent from
the local area. February's will be a
skating party and also the 1987 "Sno
Camp" at Circle R Ranch, Delewan,
New York. Quizzing for this event will
be Proverbs 2.
The guest speaker for this month
was Rev. Wes Aarum, director of Cir-
cle R Ranch. He showed a film "Time
of Your Life" about the ranch. He
then favoured the group with a piano
solo and led in the singing of some
choruses. Afterwards he delivered a
very inspiring message.
Everyone was happy to renew ac-
quaintance with Wes.
W. wish to take this
time to thank you,
our patrons for your
support during the
past year.
