Many Riverview W.I. members and

Kirkton WI
About 50 people, including
members, husbands, children and
friends enjoyed a pot luck supper at
.the Christmas meeting of the Kirkton
Women's institute. After the meal, the
meeting was opened by the president,
Mrs. Bill Spence, with a Christmas
greeting. Minutes and cor-
respondence were read by the
secretary Mrs. Ellis Strahan, and roll
call answered with a tip on farm,
safety.
A donation will be sent to the Op-
timism Place in Stratford. A reading
"what is Christmas" was given by the
president.
Highlight of the meeting was.
special presentations to six members
who have completed 25 consecutive
years in Institute namely; Miss. Jean
Copeland, Mrs. Phyllis Rodd, Mrs.
Marian Urquhart, Mrs. Margaret
Crago, Mrs. Verna Blackler and Mrs.
Eva Beckett. They were presented
with tritium china plates.
Another special presentation was
Life Membership Certificates and
pins to five members namely: Mrs.
Bessie Greenstreet, Mrs. Verna
McElrea, Mrs. Eva Beckett, Mrs.
Elsie Shute and Mrs. Verda Morrison.
The four girls were not present, but
Marlyne Denham, Maryanne DenOt-
ter and Leanne Burgin will be
presented with gifts. Congratulations
to all.
The meeting continued with en-
joyable music by Leonard Bragg and
Jack Wiles on the banjo and
mouthorgan. They were presented
with gifts by Mrs, Bill Spence.
Special speaker, John Miller, presi-
dent of Farm Safety Committee, was
introduced by Mrs. Bill Spence, and
he covered two topics; stress and fire
extinguishers, along with a film
"Murphy Goes Farming". He was
presented with a gift by Mrs. Bob
Ratcliffe. A donation was collected
for the Farm Safety Committee.
Draws for poinsettias were won by Short Order Meals
Susie Wiles, Orrie Hartwick, Annie A very filling and fulfilling day was

Bells and a gift exchange between Craig, on December 4, as Evelyn

usual meeting place) in Ailsa Craig,
amid colorftll Christmas decorations,
complete with lighted tree, all sup-
plied by the president. Gertrude
Rosser and her committee were in
charge of setting out the food, and
also responsible for the interesting
program.
Following the meal, the president,
Evelyn McNaughton, opened the
meeting in the usual Institute man-
ner, and Margaret Wilson, secretary,
read the minutes. From these, it was.
noted that a podium was being made:
100 copies of "Get Acquainted with
Women's Institute tspecifically,
Riverview) were provided for the
local Neighbourhood Welcome com-
mittee; a float is being entered in the
local Santa Claus Parade; a reply to
a request from a W.I. member in
England was written by Ruth
McCallum, and others will supply
future information as we begin to
correspond; and we were reminded to
work on our House Logs this winter.
Several Household Hints, prepared by
Greta George, were read.
The program began With Christmas
musical selections played by Rob and
Randy Whiteford on their guitars,
which were a real delight, and a nice
beginning to a seasonal program.
Rev. Anne Beattie told the Christmas
story in a very exciting and unusual
manner which we all could visualize
as we listened to her account of the
Christmas pageant. Nola McEwen
gave a good reading with a wor-
thwhile moral. Mary Rees gave the
sunshine convener's report, and she
and Jennie Morton will send out a
great mdny cards in December.
The president called on Gertrude
Rosser, the District president, to
bring geetings to her own Institute
before relinquishing her position at
the end of the year. She told of visiting
10 branches, and pointed out the
various pins she was wearing, some
of which will be passed on to the next
District president to wear. •
Before closing the meeting, Evelyn
thanked all those who contributed to-
the
othe meeting, and reminded that the
next meeting would be on February
3, to which we are to bring homemade
Valentines or old ones we have receiv-
ed. Marilyn Barbe will speak on the
topic, "The Potter and the Clay", and
demonstrate. Won't you join us?
presented the short course, "Short
Order Meals", which they had taken
at Arva, sponsored by the Ministry of
Agricutlure and Food. Twenty-eight
people arrived at 10:00 a.m., and were
handed a cup of.coffee with cookies,
as well as a 63 -page booklet on the
above topic, and a colorful pamphlet
on Minute Rice called, "Anything
Goes."
The main objectives for the course
were: to help participants develop
timesaving habits, to encourage
menu planning, and to show how
herbs and spices when properly used
can make everyday meals more ex-
citing. Quizzes were done on "The Ef-
ficient Kitchen", and "The Efficient
Cook", ,which proved quite infor-
mative. The booklet contains much
good information on "The Second
Time Around" for foods; "Quality In-
surance". dealing with storage time:
"The Cutting Edge" telling of proper
knives, and how to sharpen them; and
the "Cutting and Deboning of a
Chicken".
Much organization had been done
by the leaders ahead of time, as all
the food had been purchased and
allotted in several work areas in the
room. Electric Frying pans were us-
ed for the stir frying, as well as the
stove burners, and the oven for bak-
ing. Everyone had a 'volunteered' job
in preparing the meal, or cleaning up.
after. As the saying goes, "You learn
to do by doing". Now, don't you want
to know what we had for our Gourmet
meal? Each recipe was quadrupled to
serve the 30 people present.
Well, we had chicken a la dijonaise,
steak with mushroom sauce, parsley
potatoes, buttered peas, sliced car-
rots, all made according to the
recipes, and accompanied by a bean
salad, a cottage cheese salad, and a
fruit salad provided by the leaders.
But you haven't heard everything yet.
For dessert, we had peach cobbler
from the oven, peaches with golden
sauce, berry freeze, and grapes. As
one lady remarked on leaving, "That
was a ten -dollar meal, for two dollars
(the cost of the food).
The leaders thanked the ladies for
coming and making the day so en-
joyable, also for the very generous
"tip". Just another Riverview W.I.
project!

Silently
she's disappointed...
You know the look.
She says she simply adores the
gift you gave her ... but her eyes
can't hide her disappointment.
She had her heart set on something
else ...
Could it have been something from
Looking Good Fashions in Exeter?
You've seen her stop and gaze through
their window at least a dozen times.
You've heard her talk about outfits
she fell in love with ... but always
said "Oh well, I guess I can make do."
This Christmas, show her you're
still full of surprises.
