Hawks ge.win, tie in two junior starts
•
The Exeter Hawks took three of a
possible four points on the weekend to
maintain their slim grip on second
place in the northern division of the
Western Junior "D" loop.
After battling the Clinton Mustangs
to a 5-5 draw at the rec centre, Fri-
day, the locals bombed the Thedford
Lumberjacks by an 11-5 margin in a
road trip, Saturday.
The three pionts pulled the Hawks
to within three of the front -running
Brussels Bulls, but the latter enjoy
two games in hand. The locals are
three points ahead of their namesakes
from Mitchell.
The'Exeter crew have a couple of
tough opponents this week as they
host their perennial foes from Lucan
for the first and only time this season.
That game is this -Friday at the rec
centre. Sunday afternoon, the Hawks
travel to Brussels for what could be
their final shot at first place.
The Hawks announced this week
that defenceman Dale Timmerman
and forwards Steve Gould and Scott
Lovie will represent the team in the
annual Junior "D" all-star game
scheduled for Lucan on January 10.
It was also noted that Scott Bogart
will be lost to the team until mid
January after suffering a broken col-
lar bone in a game last week against
Mt. Brydges.

ly for a tie with the visiting Mustangs
as they continued to have trouble on
home ice. Trailing 4-3 going into the
third, the Hawks gave up a quick goal
after 14 seconds to fall further behind.
Jon O'Connor got that one back at
the 2:15 mark and defenceman Dale
Timmerman fired the equalizer with
only 57 seconds left in the contest
when he converted a pass from Dan
Nairn.
Jeff Ansems, George Pratt and
Nairn scored the other markers, the
latter's coining on the only successful
powerplay recorded by Exeter.
Nairn and Scott Lovie had two
assists each, with singles going to
Mark Morrissey, Dave Cassone and
Jeff Reid.
Brad Bender worked between the
pipes and recorded 22 saves, while
former Hawk Marty Merner had 19
for the Mustangs.
Clinton scored twice with a man ad-
vantage and added one on a short=
handed effort as the Hawks sat out 55
minutes in penalties compared to the
40 for Clinton.
