Centennials win area soccer title On Saturday, November 15, the senior team of the Exeter soccer club, the Centennials, brought to a close a very enjoyable and successful season. With a record of nine wins, one tie and two losses, giving the team a total of 19 points, the Exeter team ended up on top of the Ausable Soccer League. By defeating second place Nairn, with a record of seven wins, four ties and only one loss in the last game of the season, the Centennials were look- ing forward to meeting Nairn in a four point series for the A trophy. The Ausable league consisted of teams from Exeter, Nairn, Grand Bend, Arkona, London, Lucan and Huron Park. Grand Bend took third place in the league along with the B trophy by defeating the London team two straight games. With the three top teams in the league finishing with 19, 18 and 17 points, it was very com- petitive to finish first. The Exeter team, coached and managed by John Muller and Dick Lord, had a very good mixture of older experienced players like Joe Laurie, Francis Hartman, John Flanagan, Pete Czypyha, Gerald Weersink, John Muller, Dick Lord, Paul and Jerry VanDeWalle,. Dave Holmes and John VanEsbroeck with the best influx of some younger and excellent players. These players, like Shawn O'Rourke, Joe Martens, Dale Regier, Wayne Smith, Jack Smits and Morris VanDeWalle, were very valuable to the outcome of the season. With the return of a former Centen- nial with excellent goal keeping abili- ty, in the name of Paul VanEsbroeck the team had a very well balanced defense and attack. This was proven with a record of 55 goals for and 12 against in league play. Ip the four point series to determine an A winner, the squad tied Nairn in the first game 0 to 0, won the second game 2 to 0 and won the third and final game 7 to 2. In their final playoff game, with a very quick lead of four goals, the Ex- eter team relented their attack somewhat and Nairn came back with momentum to score two goals. The opposing team then had the oppor- tunity of two separate penalty shots, but shot wide on the first one and then Paul VanEsbroeck in goal for Exeter stopped the second shot about five minutes later. After Paul's save, Ex- eter's attack came alive again resulting in three more Exeter goals. The team would like to thank John Rasenberg, a former Centennial, of JMR Electric, with outfitting the team in uniforms.
