Best season effort in Tavistock Timei-Advocate, November 26, 1986 Page 3A Mohawks win two stiaight, move into first place fie The Exeter Mohawks on the strength of two impressive victories on the weekend have moved into a tie for first place in the Ontario Hockey Association Central Senior "B" hockey league. Saturday night the Mohawks came up with their best effort of the young season in disposing of the Royals 4-2 and Sunday night at home they whitewashed the Palmerston -..21's 15-0. Friday night Palmerston edged Elora 5-3. The Mohawks and Elora Rocks are now tied for first,place with 14 points apiece. Each team has played 11 games. Next come the Tavistock Royals and Hillsburgh deadlocked for third place at 13 points apiece. The Exeter club now has a mild rest until they travel to Hillsburgh on Fri - day; December 5 and are back at the South Huron Rec Centre Sunday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. to meet the Tavistock Royals. • Get Early Start In Friday's win in Tavistock, the Mohawks got off to a quick start at the 3.41 mark of the first period as Norm Campbell found Cam Doig all alone in front of the opposition net and the Seaforth native made no mistake. Less than two minutes later, Terry Zehr evened the count for Tavistock, but the Mohawks regained the lead for good with three minutes to go as Doig was again successful. This time the assists were provided by Bill Glover and Kris Bedard. What proved to be the winning goal for the Exeter club came at 3.25 of the second session as Ron Elliott made a solo dash from his own blueline, fought off two checks in the Tavistock corner and came out into the slot to fire the puck home. Early in the third period, Kevin Albrecht put the Tavistock team back within one goal on a power play. Early in the third period, the in- surance goal for the Mohawks came from the stick of Al Gates on a bing- bing play with Cam Doig and Norm Campbell. Turning in strong efforts for the Mohawks were goalie Rick Pikul, defenceman Ron Elliott and forward Cam Doig. Penalty Free Runaway In Sunday's romp over Palmerston, referee Lee Richards called only one penalty on each team in a free wheel- ing contest. Bill Glover paced the Mohawks with an outstanding five goal perfor- mance and Rick Hart was close behind with a four goal effort. Scores from minor sports In their only start this week in Shamrock league play, the Exeter pee wees scored an impressive 5-2 victory over Goderich. After a scoreless first period, the Exeter youngsters virtually assured the win with four unanswered second period scores. Steve Dubarry led the locals in the middle frame with a pair of suc- cessful shots, assisting were Brett Lammie and Fred Steciuk. The other goals were Joel Campbell on an unassisted effort and Brett Lammie converted a pass from Dubarry. A goal from the stick of captain Chris Lerikos on a three-way passing combination with Marty DeBruyn and Ben Guenther with 17 seconds re- maining in the third period clinched the victory. In the first period, Guenther started the scoring by relaying a pass from Lerikos into the Goderich net and in the middle frame it was Brent Urlin registering on an unassisted effort. * * * Saturday, the Exeter bantam Eagles hosted Mount Brydges at the local arena. Leading Exeter to the 10-3 win over Mount Brydges were some excellent offensive and defensive perfor- mances. Peter Lerikos had a five point day. Jamie Bedard, Laurie Chalmers and Shawn Heywood all with four points each and Todd McCann with three points turned in strong efforts to ensure the win over Mount Brydges. Strong defensive outings by Jamie Tomes, Justin Charrette and Glen Quinn allowed 19 shots on net which Richard Philips handled easily. * * * The Exeter II novice team scored a 3-1 win over the Ilderton A's in a regular houseleague novice hockey game. The 'Exeter goals came from the sticks of Bryce Hann, Ryan Beckett and Andrew Vern. Assists went to Geoff Ilann and goalie Mike ichwindt. The lone Ilderton score was notch- ed by Scott Lbft. * * -* In their only start this week in the Shamrock hockey league, the Exeter bantams dropped a 2-1 decision to Goderich. One of the organizers Bill Brock reports that Port Stanley, Mitchell, Lucan, Belmont, Ilderton, Huron. Park and Zurich will be in town to do battle with the host Exeter Waxers. Play begins at 8 a.m., Saturday with the 'B' finals set for 5:30 p.m. the same day with the 'A' final beginning at 6:30 p.m. red light three times. Brian Mercer helped set up two of the scores and captain Randy Kraul and Pete Tuckey assisted in single fashion. On the other Exeter score Mike Clark converted a pass from Cam Doig. The four goals first period spurt was repeated in the second as Rick Hart started it off with his fourth goal of the night followed by successful shots from Pete Tuckey, Bill Glover and Mike Clark. Bryan Baker picked up two assists and helping on one goal apiece were Kris Bedard, Pat Cyr, Bill Glover and Rick Hart. Early in the third period, Pete Tuckey converted a pass from Brian Mercer and then Bill Glover reeistered three goals in succession to up'his game total to five. Cam Doig notched his third and fourth assists of the night and Bryan Baker and Ron Elliott assissted singly. In the last half of the final period, Norm Campbell, Brian Mercer and Kris Bedard completed the Exeter goal total on passes provided by Steve Nelson, Al Gates, -Pete Tuckey and Rick Hart.
