The saying "A thing of beauty is a
Joy forever" is nevermore true than
when referring to the artifacts of a
previous generation.
Church House Antiques, located in
the former Anglican Church on Queen
Street in Hensall, is filled with the lov-
ingly crafted mementoes of another
era, made to be both beautiful and
useful by quilters, carpenters. potters
and other artisans who did not realize
at the time they were working on
future heirlooms.
Janis Bisback, co-owner with hus-
band Peter, points out some of the
treasures. One is a signature quilt
won in a bidding battle with an
ilnerlcan at a local estate sale. The
quilt was created as a money -raiser
for the Red Cross during World War

Residents of Varna, Kippen,
Drysdale, Hensall and the surroun-
ding townships paid to have their
names embroidered on the quilt,
which contains over 600 signatures, a
lasting record of pioneer families in
this area.
A commode chair embellished with
fancy knobs and carvings was crafted
by Thomas Collins of Clandeboye who
was born in 1814 and lived to celebrate
his 100th birthday.
Collin's most famous creation was
his own coffin, whose perfect fit he
proudly and repeatedly
demonstrated.
A meticulously built miniature
chest of drawers was constructed by
a member of the Consitt family either

playhouse.
A sturdy chair is attributed to Ge -
mien Hart, a Bayfield craftsman
whose surviving carved carousel
horses are museum quality.
There's a rope bed from Zurich, a
magnificent.sideboard once owned by
a Seaforth mayor, and a carpenter's
box with interior .compartments of
cherry, bird's eye maple and burled
wood which was manufactured at the
Brown and Clark Buggy Works,
Hensall.
The former church is a time cap-
sule that gives browsers an insightful
and enjoyable trip back to another
era. Janis acts as tour guide, pointing
out items of special significance or
sentimental attachment.
Janis and husband Peter became
antique dealers by accident. rather

than design. Janis grew up in an
historical house in Seaforth, and
recalls being allowed to accompany
coal dealer Bill Hart on his trips to
Nixon Hill to dig up old bottles to add
to the collection lining his office.
Shortly after the Bisbacks were
married 15 years ago, Peter was off
work for a year as a result of a serious
accident. As an economy measure,
the young couple began furnishing
their home with second-hand fur-
niture - a solid kitchen table, a cherry
dresser, a brass bed. The collection
kept growing.
In 1977 the 10o -year-old Anglican
church next door was offered for sale.
When the Bisbacks heard that a pro-
spective buyer wanted to turn the

building into apartments, they sub-
mitted a successful offer to purchase.
Then they discovered their insurance
company wouldn't insure an empty
building. What better place to store
the overflow from their antique
collection!
The next step was to sell some of
the accumulated items. The Bisbacks
.have operated Church House Anti-
ques for the past six years, specializ-
ing in articles from Huron and Mid-
dlesex counties.
Husband and wife are equally en-
thusiastic about a hobby that has
turned into a commercial venture.
"Going from full-time collectors to
full-time dealers has been a dream
come true," Janis said happily.
