Granton WI plans for Christmas
By M*$. II. • SUMMERS
Gronton
At the Granton United Church, the
Rev. Bruce Pierce was in charge of
the morning service and took the ser-
mon from the scripture lesson and en-
titled it "God Hears Your Sneeze".
There are some people in theme
church today who lead a different life.
God is concerned with every person
on earth regardless of the type of life
they choose to lead. "There are some
that trouble you with the way they
live," said the minister and this refer-
red to homosexuals.
In the children's time, the minister
asked them to stand up and smile at
the congregation and to each other.
Smiles fill you with joy.
Women's Institute
Granton Womens Institute met at
the home of Mrs. Florence Bryan,
Tuesday, November 1s.
Mrs. Norman Riddell presided and
opened the meeting with the WI ode
and the Mary Stewart collect follow-
ed by the Lords Prayer in unison.
It was decided that the WI would go
to the North Star Restaurant at Elgin -
field on December 16. Each member
is to bring three small gifts for
Wildwood Nursing Home.
Everyone took part in the program
with readings, poems and a quiz. The
president closed the meeting and the
hostess served a dessert lunch. •
The best measure of success is not an
expensive car or high-priced clothes,
but how your children describe you to
their friends.

Church news
The Last Sunday After Pentecost
was in charge of the minister Rev.
Robert Matheson who told the
children a story entitled "King For
Ever".
The Scripture lesson was read from
2 Samuel 5:1-15, Colossians 1:11-20,
John 12:9-19. The sermon was entitl-
ed "Close one book: Open another".
Quite often when we travel east we
take the county road which goes
through Tavistock. If you don't know
the road it is an experience in itself.
When you arrive in Tavistock the traf-
fic patterns are so different from a
country road setting you would think
you are in another world. For one
thing at the intersection of the coun-
ty road the highway in Tavistock
there is a thirdsstreet intersection.
Our reading this morning is much
like that intersection. We enter the
placing of David on the throne of
Israel'in the middle of the story. It, is
a time when Israel, as a nation,
stands at an intersection. David is the
one so many people look to in order
to lead them across the abyss.
Today we celebrate the end of one
church year but as one year ends
there is always another one beginn-
ing. We stand at another intersection.
We repeat biblical and human
history. Today we celebrate the Kin-
ship of Christ over all of God's created
earth. Next Sunday we begin the
season of Advent. We have Jesus on
the throne of God today.
Next Sunday we begin to retrace
the steps Christ takes in order to
make his way to God's special place
for him. "Through the Son, then, God
decided to bring the whole universe
back to himself. God made peace
thr6ugh His Son's death on the cross
and so brought back to himself all
things, both on earth and in heaven
(Colossians 1:20)."
Today we too, stand at an intersec-
tion but we have the advantage of be-
ing able to celebrate that life which
Christ has come into the world to call
us to and to share with us.
Celebration of the Sacrament of the
Lord's Supper will be observed next
Sunday November 30 at 11:15 a.m.
which is the First Sunday in Advent.
White Gift service will be held Sun-
day December 7 at 11:15 a.m.
The Sunday School Christmas con-
cert will be held Sunday December 14.
The Christmas meeting of the
United Church Women will be held on
Monday December i at 8 p.m. Don't
forget your Secret Pal gifts, also toys,
clothing, good used or new and cann-
ed goods.
