This cen- tralized service for families began more than twenty-five years ago to provide consistency and confidentiali- ty to families and to avoid duplication in services. The Christmas Bureau is operated in the five major County towns, Clin- ton, Exeter, Goderich, Seaforth and Wingham. It is a location where peo- ple drop off donations for children and families who may be less fortunate than themselves at Christmas. It is often very difficult for parents to ad- mit that they cannot provide the ex- tras for their children at this special Rebekahs host assembly head Pride of Huron Rebekah Lodge commenced with a banquet at Trivitt Memorial Parish Hall with Assembly President Sister Kathryn Bridges making her official visit. Hensall and Seaforth Lodges were guests also. Noble Grand Sister Jan Jeffery welcomed the guests. Vice Grand Sister Mavis Atthill reported for the visiting committee. Assembly President Sister Kathryn Bridges had a very inspiring message for us all. Hensall Lodge draped the charter and Seaforth Lodge performed the closing ceremonies. The Christmas party will be held December 3 with a turkey dinner at 6:30 and exchange of $2 gifts. Birthday greetings were sung for Sisters Lena Kirkland, Alva Routley and Kay Cann. D.D.P. Sister Lila Smith and her team performed their drill work. Coat appeal is underway The fifth annual "Koats for Kids for Christmas" campaign officially began November 15, 1986. The pro- gram is sponsored by London's Mis- sion Services, Sketchley Cleaners, and London Radio Station BX -93 Stereo FM. Again this year, London and area residents will be asked to donate any used winter coats they no longer need. Coats may be dropped off at any of the Sketchley Cleaners locations in London, St. Thomas, Alymer or Strathroy, for cleaning and minor repairs. The coats are then passed on to Mission Services for distribution. With the co-operation of London's Red Cross, a distribution centre will once again be set-up in the lower level of the Red Cross building, 840 Com- missioners Road East. The centre will open, November 24 and good clean winter coats will be available, free, to those in need until December 24. From Monday to Friday, the centre will be open 10-6 p.m., on Saturdays, 12-6 p.m. On Sundays, the centre will be closed. "Koats for Kids for Christmas" has proven to be an inexpensive way for everyone to share the warmth of the Holiday Season with those less for- tunate. Last year alone, over 7000 coats were donated and distributed, and even better results are expected in 1986. As well, families are of- fered canned goods and staples along with help for Christmas Dinner. Throughout the year Family and Children's Services provides wool for volunteers to knit mitts so children can have warm hands on cold winter days. The Christmas Bureau in 1986 is coordinated by volunteer Mrs. Pauline Lingard of Grand Bend who oversees the total program and pro- vides consultation for local groups in order that there is some uniformity of service to families in the county. She is assisted by Mrs. Margaret Allan of Clinton who provides volunteer secretarial services which allow us to request donations of both goods and money. Family and Children's Services also work hard to ensure that everyone who makes a donation is properly acknowledged including pro- viding receipts for income tax purposes. This year the Christmas Bureau will be accepting donations during the week of December s -13 with times and locations listed in local papers and previous week. Financial con- tributions can be made at any time to Family and Children's Services, 46 Gloucester Terrace, Goderich, On- tario N7A 1W7: Our experience has shown us that this is a, necessary service that pro- vided help to over 300 families in 1985. As well we hear annually from parents who wish to donate after receiving; or who let 'us know that while they needed our help last year, this year they are able to provide for their families themselves. The local groups who volunteer to spend many hours managing this pro- ject tell us that their reward is the ap- preciation of moms and dads when they realize that their children will have gifts under the tree on Christmas morning and good things to eat on that very special day.
