VETS - Major George Youmatoff, (centre), guest speaker at the Hen-
son Legion's Remembrance Day dinner and his wife Flo talk with
World War 1 veteran Sam Thomson, 93.
Remembrance banquet speaker issues. challenge
Vets must do teaching jobs
Guest speaker Major George
Youmatoff built his talk to those at-
tending the Hensall Legion's Remem-
brance Day dinner around the foot-
note which appears on all official
Legion stationery: "They served till
death. Why not we?"
Expressing pleasure at the sight of
so many young Legion members,
Youmatoff said the Hensall branch
was doing exactly what the Royal
Canadian Legion is supposed to do -
educating the oncoming generation
that there is a better way to settle
arguments than bloody war.
Speaking as a professional soldier,
Youmatoff said he is prepared to fight
again, but would rather not. And he
does not want to see his grandchildren
go to war. He stressed negotiation as
the only way to save this global
household from belligerent men who
start fights to further their own wild
ambitions.
"We are our brother's keeper. It is
up to us who have been in contact with
the horrors of war to infect those who
have not. War is not glorious, but
messy and heartbreaking. The
Legion's job is to teach this, and the
community's responsibility is to
listen", Youmatoff asserted.
Youmatoff conceded that the "war
to end all wars", fought in two in-
stallments, is not over yet. It partial-
ly succeeded, as the years since have
seen only minor blow-ups.

citizens of Hensall and area. All pro-
ceeds from this project go to Cystic
Fibrosis research.
This year the club mailed out 55 let-
ters to area businesses and is setting
up a store on King Sl. in Hensall on
December 5 from 5-9 p.m. and
December 6 from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Their
goal is to Kill 175 plants. This is an in-
crease of 50 per cent over last year.
This project was initiated last year
at Kinette zone level. Eight clubs par-
ticipated. This year it has blossomed
into a district wide campaign. Clubs
from Niagara to collingwobd to Wind-
sor have undertaken to sell these
flowers as a C.F. project.
Huron Ridge Acres north of Zurich

did last year. This allows the Kinet-

November 27 and*December 5-6.
Huron Ridge Acres has made
available to the club both single
plants with 5-7 blooms, in red, pink or
white. Please contact Pam at 236-7211

Youmatoff said he was thankful
Canada has taken on the role of
peacekeeper in places like Cyprus
and the Congo.
"As sane, thinking adults we have
one obligation," Youmatoff told his
audience. "That is to give our kids the
opportunity to grow up to be sane,
thinking adults. That is the way
wisdom and peace will come into this
world."
The major spoke from first-hand
experience. He was born in Russia
and came to Canada with his parents
in 1925. He grew up in Montreal.
Youmatoff went overseas with the
Royal Canandian Engineers in 1939,
switched to the armoured corps in
1941, and entered Sandhurst two years
later.
After graduating from the famous
English military college, Youmatoff
was loaned to British Intelligence and
was with the Soviet army from 1944
until the end of the war, going as far
as Russia.
Youmatoff left the army in 1953.

Queens wa,
Hello every one, from Queensway!
Here is a run down of our busy week
that we would like to share with you.
Monday afternoon was time for our
bingo session with the Bethal Reform-
ed Church ladies, who came in to call
out numbers and lead a hymn sing.
Tuesday, November 11, Queensway
went over to Hensall Public School for
a Remembrance Day service put on
by the children. It was a beautiful
ceremony that made us look back and
remember. We would like to give a
warm thank you to Mrs. Elsie
Mathers for volunteering her time on
this Remembrance Day morning.
In the afternoon Reverend Bob
Sinisac came in and gave a very
powerful and captivating service per-
taining to the Remembrance Day
theme.
Even though it's November, we are
already gearing up for Christmas at
Queensway. For example, on Thurs-
day afternoon the Health Care Aides
from Conestoga College put on a
Christmas dance with special enter-
tainment; The Huron Strings. We all
danced, clapped and got in the
Christmas spirit. It was a very special
afternoon!
Our movie for the week was entitl-
ed; "Enduring Animals". It was a
wilderness movie showing us
Canada's natural beauty. The film
really gave us an insight into Canada
and the beauty that surrounds us.
Friday afternoon was time for choir
practice, while Joyce Pepper accom-
panied us on the piano. There was a
super turn -out, and lots of fun!
Finally, Sunday afternoon Jack
Duncan, Ivan Norris and Jim Young
(got it right this time fellas!) came in
to entertain us while we sipped our
tea. It was a very busy and entertain-
ing afternoon.
Well that's it, we'll talk to you next
week! Quote of the week: "The
greatest artist was oncea beginner."
