Pooley twins now playing for Fort Wayne Komets
The third year of their professional hockey career has brought
-a change of scenery for a pair of Exeter twins.
Paul and Perry Pooley, who were signed as free agents in the
summer of 1984 by the Winnipeg Jets are now with the Fort Wayne
Komets of the International Hockey League.
Most of their first two years in pro ranks was spent with Sher-
brooke, Quebec of the American 'league. During this year's -
preseason training camp they told Jets general manager John
Ferguson they didn't want to go back to the Quebec city.
Since their college days at Ohio State they have been spending
their summers in Columbus, Ohio, so the trip to Fort Wayne is not
very far.
For any area hockey fans interested, all of the Fort Wayne
games can be heard on the airways on WOWO in Fort Wayne at
1190 on the a.m. dial.
We caught Sunday night's game on radio as the Komets blasted
the Saginaw Generals 8-3. Paul Pooley scored two goals to run his
season total to five and added an assist.
Saturday night, the Pooleys each picked up an assist on the se-
cond goal as the Komets lost 6-2 to Indianapolis.
The closest to Exeter the Komets will be in regular play is in
Flint and they will be in that Michigan city this Friday night.

The King is Dead
The recent death of King Clancy is a big loss to the game of
hockey. For more than 50 years he was an excellent ambassador
for our national sport in a variety of capacities.
We had the privilege of talking to Clancy a couple of times over
the past 10 years and each time it was a distinct pleasure. The last
time we saw the King was when he identified the players on a pic-
ture we have of the 1934 Montreal Maroons, the last year that team
was in the NHL.
A few of the names of that team that come to mind are Babe
Siebert, Mary Wentworth, Russ Blinco.
With the death of King Clancy, Harold Ballard has permanent-
ly closed Ballard's Bunker at the north-east corner of the Gardens
-where he and Clancy were seen during many telecasts.

Maybe You Didn't Notice
Believe it or not, the time it takes to play an average National
Hockey League games has been shortened by at least 10 minutes
over a year ago.
After the first 70 games this season, the average length of play-
ing time was two hours and 25 minutes. That's down from the
1985-86 time by 11 minutes.
A few changes have been made in an attempt to cut down on the
length of the games. The mandatory 18 minute intermission has
been cut down to 15 minutes and it is being strictly enforced.
Referees have also been more diligent in keeping play going by
allowing players more leeway in moving the puck along the boards.
They've also been tougher on goalies, consistently penalizing them
for delaying the game if they unnecessarily smother the puck or
deliberately shoot it into the seats.
Still in second place
Irish meet Belmont in important game in Lucan, t.ight
Tonight's OHA Junior 'D' Western
hockey league game at the Lucan
Community Centre will be very im-
portant to both clubs. •
The visiting Belmont Bombers hold
down first place in the south division
with 25 points compared to 22 for the
Lucan Irish. The big fact is the Irish
have three games in hand.
In games this week, the Irish gain-
ed five of a possible six points as they
defeated Mount Brydges 5-2 and
Thedford 6-4 and played to a 5-5 tie
with Seaforth. .
In addition to tonight's game
against Belmont, the Irish travel to
Clinton Friday night to meet the
Mustangs.
Power Plays Help
In Wednesday's win over Mount
Brydges the first three scores for
Lucan came on power play efforts.
The only Irish score of the first
period came as captain Bob Thirlwall
completed a three-way passing com-
bination with Wayne Urbshott and
Paul Barnes. In the middle frame
Brad Muir registered on passes from
Scott Denomy and Bob Thirlwall.
In the first half of the closing
period, Joe Febrey converted passes
from Rob Hardy and Scott Denomy
and teamed up with Wayne Urbshott
to put Glenn Marshall into scoring
position.
The final goal of the game with 35
seconds to go was shot by Brad Muir
into the empty opposing net on passes
from Joe Febrey and Scott Denomy.
Come from Behind
Friday night's tie in Seaforth was
accomplished in come -from -behind
fashion with a pair of goals in the last
four minutes of play.
In the first period Joe Febrey
started the Irish counting on passes
from Dean Doerr and Bob Thirlwall
and Rob Hardy registered with
assists going to Febrey and Wayne
Urbshott.
Dean Doerr converted a pass from
Paul Barnes to account for the only
Lucan goal of the middle session and
they were down by one goal.
Early in the third period Seaforth
went ahead by two goals and the Irish
waited until 15.28 to begin to get close.
At that point Wayne Urbshott finish-
ed off a play with Joe Febrey and with
three minutes to go it was Paul
Deplanche getting the tie as he scored
with assists going to Urbshott and
Febrey. r
