Free skating planned
Lynne Farquhar at the South Huron Rec Centre has lined up
another special day of free skating activities for area youngsters
on Wednesday, November 26.
That's the day area public school students have a day off from
regular classes while their teachers participate in a Professional
Development Day.
Due to the large attendance the numerous free skating ses-
sions have been getting, Lynne is going to try something -different.
The first session of one hour starting at 1 p.m. will be restricted
to youngsters seven years of age or under or inexperienced older
skaters.
Those students eight years of age and older or experienced
skaters will share the ice surface from 2 to 3 p.m. The concession
booth will be open during both skating sessions. That will be good
news for the youngsters. Skating helps their appetites.
Lynne also reminds us that ice is available to rent on PD days
for $25 per hour. Any interested -persons can call 235-2833.
The PD days skating and free Sunday skating sessions are
sponsored by a nun, )or of Exeter and area service clubs and
organizations.
Regular free skating sessions are held each Sunday afternoon
from 2 to 3 p.m., except when hockey tournaments are held dur-
ing the usual skating times.
The groups which have made donations this year to be applied
to free skating are the Exeter Lions, Lioness club, R.E. Pooley
branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, Ex -
Business Improvement Association.
• The other free skating sessions are each Tuesday and Thurs-
day from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. These are sponsored
by the Rec centre and include parents and tots and seniors.
The Rec Centre auditorium is also a busy spot each Tuesday,

Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. That's when the shuf-
fleboard enthusiasts are out in full force and they do have a lot
of fun and get some exercise, mostly in their vocal chords.
The Kernel is back
It was good to see John Kernick back at the South Huron Rec
Centre Sunday night, although it was not in his usual position.
John, better known as the Kernel had his hockey playing days
for probably most of this winter cut short a few weeks ago when
he was seriously injured in a farming accident. He was able to
make it to the press box on crutches Sunday night.
. Hat night successful
Junior `B' circles, John was being counted on to be a very valuable
member of the senior `B' Exeter Mohawks. In the few games was
able to play before the accident it was evident he was going to be
able to fill -the role expected of him.
Sunday night it was really hats off to the staunch Mohawk fans.
Thanks to the generosity of the number of Exeter and area
businesses and merchants most of the fans in attendance were
given a hat.
Different standings
If any fans of The National Hockey League happening to be out
of the country for a year or so would hardly believe their eyes when
they look at the current standings in the Norris Division.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are in first place with 17 points. After
the way they performed in the playoffs last spring, that isn't too
surprising, but, the Detroit Red Wings are the real eye opener.
Plagued by coaching problems for a number of years, Jacques
Demers appears to be the saviour in the Motor City. He had the
reputation in St.Louis of stressing defensive play.
To say he has carried that philosophy to Detroit is an
understatement. At the time of writing the Red Wings are in se-
cond place only two points back of the Leafs. That's- not as
unbelievable as the goals against mark of the team.
In their first 14 games, the Wings have allowed only 38 goals.
They have only scored one more goal at 39, but have seven wins "
and a tie. One can say that's playing things close to the vest.
