The Exeter Malted Milks met Oc-
tober 2 to visit Lorne and Margaret
Herrn's dairy farm located at RR 1
Woodham.
We saw calves as young as a day
old up to ten year old cows. The day
old calf drank his milk from a bottle .
until he was a week old. Then he would
switch to milk and calf feed which
was diluted with water for his small
stomach.
For many of us our favourite was
the twins. They liked to suck on our
fingers. The cows were fed twice a
day and also milked twice a day
therefore keeping the Herns very
busy. The milk was very warm.
We were also shown a cow that had
just had an operation for a displaced
stomach.
Everyone enjoyed the farm. It was
a new experience for many of us and
it helped us to realize how much work
and dedication it takes to run your
own dairy farm.
We would like to thank Nancy
Charette and Janice Brock for
transporting us to and from the dairy
farm. A special thank you to the
Heyns for the enjoyable tour of their
dairy farm.
