The First Lady of the Guitar
Liona Boyd Has New image
Liona Boyd has been acclaimed throughout the
world for her superlative performance as a classical
guitartist. Her arrival in London on November 22 at.
Alumni Hall is very much anticipated as Liana Boyd
promises a very unique and new concert. Boyd's latest
album "Persona" projects a "new" sound, displaying
her unique versatility and ability to cross over to a pop
image.
The "First Lady of the Guitar" began her study of
music at the age of fourteen in Toronto with Eli
Kassner. In 1972, she graduated with honours from the
University of Toronto s Music Faculty and in the same
year placed first for guitar in the Canadian National
Music competition. Liona has studied with most of the
worlds top guitarists, including Julian Bream and Alex-
andre Lagoya.
Cahada's foremost guitarist has displayed her
amazing virtuousity in most of the major cities of North
American with performances from Carnegie Hall to the
Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. The New York has
praised Liona for "her flair for brilliance". Ixten-
sive tours have taken her to Europe, the Far East, the
Caribbean, South Pacific, from North to South and Cen-
tral Americas. Several international composers have
dedicated their works to Liona, and she has had the
honour of performing for the heads of State of Canada,
the U.S.A., Mexico, Britain, France, Germany,.Japan,
Italy, Jamaica, Trinidad and Cuba.

traducing her instrument to popular audiences. Liona
is also a frequent performer on television and has had
numerals appearances on such national shows as Mery
Griffin, The Tonight Show, The Tomorrow Show, Mike
Douglas, Dinah Shore, The Today Show and has ap-
peared with the Boston Pops.
Liona has been awarded four of Canada's Juno
Awards, presented to her by the music industry for be-
ing "Instrumental Artist of the Year". She has also been
a recipient of the Vanier Award and the Order of
Canada for her cultural contributions.
After achieving so much in her successful career,
Liona Boyd strikes out in a totally different direction
breaking out of her "First Lady of the. Guitar" mold.
Her fans are sure to be enthralled with her new sound.
Her newest album, "Persona", reflects the multi-
faceted nature of Liona's talent. The idea of an ex-
perimental new sound had been floating around for
sometime but started to become reality when Liona con-
tacted Michael Kamen (of Pink Floyd and the
Eurythmics fame) early in 1985. They met in Munich,
New York and Toronto selecting repertoire and plann-
ing the concept of "Persona". Finally in London,
England after a ten day recording session, "Persona"
was born. Many talented musicians have successfully
contributed to the 'album including Eric Clapton and
other musicians who have worked with Pink Floyd,
John Lennon, Elton John and the Eurythmics.
As Liona extensively tours Canada this fall in sup-
port of "Persona", her appearance in London is great-
ly anticipated. Popular with audiences all over, her one
night concert in this area is sure to be a huge success.
