T -A photo SH senior Panthers win H.P championsiui Based on regular season results, Goderich and South Huron were ex- pected to share this year's Huron - Perth conference football titles. That's the way it worked out on Saturday, but it didn't happen exact- ly as expected. The SHDHS senior Panthers re- bounded from an earlier 8-0 loss to the Vikings and went into Goderich on Saturday and scored a convincing 15-0 victory for the title. Meanwhile, the favored South Huron juniors were edged 18-15 by Goderich at the local field as the visitors avenged an earlier loss to the Panthers. , The championship playoff outcome left all four teams with only one loss on the entire season. Super defence Super play by the defence was one of the big reasons the senior Panthers were able to pull the big upset by a score of 15-0 over the Vikings. They held the Vikings to a grand total of 134 yards, all of this came on the ground. None of the 11 passes at- tempted by the Goderich quarterback were completed. • In addition to making six key tackles, Scott Heywood made two in- terceptions. The other Goderich passes were picked off by Rick Gilfillan and Bill Fisher. Right from the opening kickoff, the shifting South Huron defence kept the Vikings off guard. Coach Ron Bogart commented, "They couldn't run off tackle onus this time". Good strong punting by Scott Miller who averaged 48 yards per kick throughout the game gave the Pan- thers good field position in the open- ing quarter. Sean Whiteford added a couple of good carries and Miller was able to kick a single for the first point of the game. The first drive by the Panthers in- to Viking territory in the second half sputtered, hut, they made no mistakes the second time. Sean Whiteford carried over for the touchdown and Jon O'Connor added the extra point. Most of the play in the second half was between the two 35 yard lines. With slightly more than two minutes to go in the final quarter,a badly plac- ed ball on third down kept the Pan- thers from a first down by an inch and gave possession to Goderich. The SH d1fence again held and Rick Gilfillan ran a Viking punt back 25 yards to give his team good field position. With 56 seconds left Scott Ileywood intercepted a Goderich pass and it looked as if the game was over. But not so, a little more excitement was yet to come. Bill Fisher in trying to run out the clock fumbled and Goderich recovered on the Soutn Iluron45. A Viking roughing penalty added to the kickoff allowed O'Connor to send the ball to the Viking goal line. On three plays Goderich gained only five yards and time ran out. The South Huron ground game P yards. up156 Sean Whiteford was good for 76 yards on 15 carries, Bill Fisher had 44 yards on the same 'limber of tries, Scott Miller gained 25 yards on eight carries and Rick Gilfillan on two attempts at the line was good for 10 yards. Bill Fisher was the top SH tackler with 11 key drops, Gower was good for eight, .Maaeten Reymer scored seven key tackles while Gerry Lam- port, John Relouw, Scott Heywood, Sean Whiteford and Dave Bryson were in on six stops apiece. Coach Ron Bogart's post -game comments to the players were, "Con- gratulations on a super effort. I can- not say enought of how well we played. It's a great tribute to all of you for the effort you put into it this year. The underdogs came through." Slipper falls The South Huron juniors appeared headed for another of their patented late -game Cinderella wins on Satur- day, but the glass slipper fell off in the final minute as the Vikings marched half the length of the field to score on the final play of the contest for and 18-16 win. As in their previous meeting with Goderich and in the semi-finalagainst Norwell, the locals fell behind early and came up with some late heroics to take a 18-12 lead. Goderich took the ensuing kickoff to mid -field and with 51 seconds left on the clock, marched down field and on the last play, Pheng Troeung took the ball around his right end from the six- yard line and just managed to hit the corner flag as he dove in through the Panthers tacklers for the winning margin. Goderich opened the scoring in the first quarter when they ran through the South Huron defensive corps for big gains and converted three third - down gambles. One of those gambles just prior to the opening touchdown was good by only one inch. The visitors continued their supremacy on both offence and defence in the second quarter and scored their second major with the aid of a costly South Huron penalty. After being stopped in the South Huron end, Goderich kicked for a single point, but that score was taken off the board and the Vikings retain- ed possession through a penalty for contacting the kicker. They then went in to score the six points for a 12-0 lead, again failing in an attempt for a two-point conversion. Strong punting by Chris Haugh got the Panthers out of trouble early in the third quarter and he eventually gave them their first point with a booming drive into the end zone. After regaining possession and grounding out two good runs, the Pan- thers took another single point on a Haugh kick into the end zone. The Panthers finally got their of- fence into gear in the final quarter and aided by a long scamper by Jeff DenOtter and a Goderich penalty, they got possession at the Goderich 23 -yard line and DenOtter then ran around his left side for the first major. Late in the quarter, the Panthers had Goderich pushed back to their own 10 -yard line and the defence came up big to finally stop them at the 32 when a Viking third down gamble was stopped a. fraction of an inch short. DenOtter ran the right side to pick up a quick 26 yards to leave the Pan- thers thers with first down on the Goderich 6 six-yard line. On his second crack at the goal line behind the short -offence squad, Wulterkens crashed over and then kicked a convert to give South Huron a 16-12 margin with the minute flag up. However, the Vikings then took a page out 'of the South Huron late - game heroics play book and from cen- tre field completed a pass to the South Huron 25 -yard line. A roughing penal- ty took the pigskin in to the 12 -yard November 5, 1986 line, and after an incomplete pass, - Troeung went through the middle for six yards to set up his game winner.
