November 5, 1986 Page 5 Goderich fans criticised, teachers extend appreciation Dear Sir, The tables have been turned, it seems! Not only has the South Huron senior football squad defeated Goderich for the Huron -Perth title but this time also, the Goderich faithful have little cause for complaint con- cerning the actions of South Huron fans. Alas! the reverse is true. I, a South Huron alumnus was wat- ching and enjoying the South Huron romp when a major situation occur- red in the stands. A few rowdy Goderich fins began tossing debris on o some South Huron fans below them. When some of our South Huron girls objected, the Goderich lads began cursing, referring to one girl as a bitch. When herboyfriend objected to that, the Goderich lads sent three of their owmto enforce a little respect. In the ensuing fight two South Huron lads stepped in and pulled off two Goderich idiots to even things up. When police arrived they pulled the Goderich "fan" off and dragged the "fan" away to a waiting police car. I'd suggest to the ladies who wrote earlier that at any game, parents will cheer and some students will swear but not just anywhere will people at- tack opposing fans. I feel that Mr. Shaw should withdraw his apology and that the Mayor of Goderich and GETS DOCTORATE — Larry M. The theme was "Agriculture in the Classroom". It dealt with the easily obtained resources available for teachers to usewith their agricultural- ly related curriculum topics. Many commodity groups participated to answer numerous questins from teachers wishing current information. Jack Wilkinson, representing the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, talked of stress on the farm and of what teachers should be aware and how they can help their students. A Huron County bountiful Lunch was prepared by the Huron South District Women's Institute to illustrate the quantity and wide variety of crops grown by our farming neighbours. This same group presented four agri- kits to the Huron County Board of Education. These materials are ful- ly prepared to be used in classrooms and were well received by teachers. Jack Riddell, Ontario Agriculture Minister, spoke of the impact agriculture has on our world and ad- dessed the challenges facing the far- ming sector. He did feel there is a future in farming and felt teachers should encourage youth to pursue it as a vocation. The day closed with comments by Ross Daily from CFPL TV. He identified consumers' habits in purchasing their groceries and challenged teachers with the task of making our next generation more aware of the food industry and becoming informed consumers of food products. The teachers federationssupported and helped organize the day along with the Huron County Federation of Agriculture, Huron South District Women's Institute, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food -Huron coun- ty Office and the Huron County Board of Education. OPSTF-Huron as one of those sponsors feels special recogni- tion must be publicly paid to numerous donors and exhibitors who made the day so successful. a hearty thank you is extended to: Boudria set as speaker Don Boudria, Member of the Federal Parliament for Glengarry - Prescott -Russell will be the guest speaker at the Huron -Bruce Federal Liberal Association Annual dinner meeting to be held at the Goderich Township Hall on Thursday, November 20. Boudria, presently the Public Works and Supply and Services critic for the official opposition, and the deputy critic of Agriculture, also holds two other positions within Liberal Caucus; Chairman of the On- tario Liberal Caucus and Deputy Chairman of the Government Opera- tions Committee. Boudria has a reputation for his motivating speaking ability, and the local Association is very excited about his participation at the upcom- ing meeting. Those who expect to reap the bless- ings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it. Thema. rant We're glad you asked! With Iry Armstrong and Bob Fletcher of HOW TO TALK TO YOUR CHILD ABOUT DEATH Talk openly. simply and directly: Explain what deoth is in terms the child con understand. Do not overdo the explanation. Encourage the child to question and probe. Be direct.. Good conversation -starters are all around us in nature: the changing of the seasons, floods, fires, frogs. birds, butterflies. Life, birth and death are all a part of nature and should be discussed comfortably, in small doses, with children. Explain that death is really "a part of life." Discuss death with a child whenever his world brushes against it - when a pet cot or dog dies.., when a flower begins to lose its petals... and certainly when a relative, friend or a public figure dies who is known to the child. Explain what a child is to expect when a death occurs in the family. When n know what to expect and what to do, they are not sur- prised or drprehensive.
