The Irish eliminated Bryanston and the Lucan White Sox to reach the league finals and Poplar Hill got by West Corners and Nairn. Lucan won the title by taking the best -of -seven series in five games. In the opener, played in Poplar Hill, the Irish took the lead in the second inning pn a single by Brad Taylor who scored on a single by Jim Zimmer. Poplar Hill bounced back in their half on a walk and then a Cliff Pierce base hit. The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when the Irish scored a pair of runs on hits by Kevin Wind- sor and Brad Taylor followed by a throwing error. In the bottom on the seventh and trailing 3-1 Poplar Hill scored on hits from Ross Cam t bell and Cliff Pierce but fell short and lost 3-2. Bob Mills was backed by eight Lucan bits and helped his own cause by striking out nine Poplar Hill batters and allowed only four hits to post the victory and handed Kerry Graham the loss. Game two was played in Lucan and Poplar Hill scored early on a two -out, two -run home run by Kerry Graham. Both teams had excellent scoring op- portunities but came away empty and the game became a pitchers' duel. Jim Daniels held on to hold Lucan to only four hits, two by Brian Noyes, while striking out 10 to win the gafne 2-0. Jamie Eveleigh received the loss allowing only three hits while striking out nine batters. With the series tied at a game apiece both teams came with their bats in hand. After a lead-off walk to Kevin Lightfoot, Vic Capitan tripled and Lucan led 1-0 after one inning. Brad Ta for singled and scored on a hit by Cecil Nickles and the Irish led 2-0 and also forced starter Kerry Graham into an early exit. Poplar Hill knotted the score at two in the bottom of the second with hits from Cliff Pierce, Lonnie Fletcher and Al Campbell but in the third the Irish scored again on hits from Vic Capitano and Brian Noyes. In the bot- tom of the fifth, Poplar Hill took the lead on a couple of hits by Al Camp- bell and Kerry Graham and also on a Lucan error which sent starter Jamie Eveleigh to the showers. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh Lucan tied the score on hits from Cecil Nickles and Bob Smith and a Poplar Hill error that sent the game into extra innings. T -A photo Lucan Irish take two wins The Lucan Irish won two games this week to move within one point of the OHA Junior 'D' south division leading Belmont Bombers. Wednesday, the Lucan club down- ed Thedford 7-3 and Sunday edged Belmont 6-5. The Irish have played two fewer games than Belmont. The Thamesford Trojans will be in Lucan tonight, Wednesday for the on- ly action this week for the Irish. Wayne Urbshott was the leading scorer in the win over Thedford with a three goal performance. Joe Febrey was close behind with a pair of suc- cessful shots. Scoring in single fashion were Paul Barnes and Terry Knowles. Wayne Urbshott notched twagoals in the opening session and both were on unassisted efforts. Belmont scored four times in the middle stanza to move ahead. The third period was only 27 seconds old when the Irish went to work as Terry Knowles completed a three-way passing combination with Wayne Urbshott and Joe Febrey. Only 44 seconds later on a power play, Wayne Urbshott completed his hat trick for the night hitting the Bel- mont net on passes from Paul Barnes and Brad Muir. At 4.52 Paul Deplancke.converted a pass from captain Rob Hardy to put the Irish in front 5-4. In the last seven minutes of play, Terry Knowles notched what proved to be the winning goal on a solo dash and Mike Valdier chalked up his se- cond goal of the game for Belmont. The other scorers for the Bombers were Mark Baker with a pair and a single score from John Evert. Broncos gain even atom split The Exeter Broncos were defeated in regular Shamrock atom league " play 6-2 by the London Sabres and scored a 4-1 exhibition victory over" Parkhill. Against Parkhill all scoring came in the last two periods of play. In. the second period Joel Campbell counted on a solo dash and Sean McCann com- pleted a three-way passing combina- tion with captain Steve Farquhar and Gavin Snell. In the final stanza, Scott Parsons converted a pass from Jeff Lingard and the latter registered with the assist going to Steve Farquhar on a shorthanded effort. The only Parkhill score came from the slick of Josh Vemeulen. Win and loss for bantams The Exeter bantams gained an even split in two Shamrock hockey league games this week. Wednesday they were blanked 4-0 by Lambeth and Friday scored a 3-1 victory over Parkhill. Against Parkhill, the Exeter club spotted the opposition the first goal and then came back with three unanswered scores. Midway through the second period, Larry Lewis notched the first Exeter goal on passes from Jamie Wulterkens and Jeff Chipchase and with two minutes remaining Bruce Papple fired what proved to be the winning score with assists going to Mark Burton and Frank Wulterkens. Halfway through the final session Al Blommaert fired an insurance goal on passes provided by Haden Tinney I and Dave O'Connor. In game four played on Lucan turf, Al Campbell started the game off with a blast. over the left field fence and was followed by another run as Jim Daniels singled and scored on an er- ror. Down by two runs in the bottom of the second Lucan scored one run on hits from Kevin Windsor, Jim Zim- mer and Bob Smith. In the bottom of the fourth the Irish crossed the plate three times on four hits and an error. Brad Taylor, Gerry Finkbeiner, Mur- ray Corless and Kevin Lightfoot all figured into the scoring. Lucan added one more run in the sixth with Bob Smith's second hit of the game and he came home on Kevin Lightfoot's third hit of the match. Jamie Eveleigh allowed only four Poplar Hill hits while striking out seven -and with relief help from Fred Frank took the win for the Irish. Jim Daniels was the losing pitcher. Game five was played in Lucan because of the poor field conditions in Poplar Hill and the Irish were ready to taste the bubbly while Poplar Hill were fighting for their playoff lives. The game opened with Lucan scoring twice on basehits from Paul Wraith, Brian Noyes and Brad Taylor. In the bottom half of the first, Bill Cochrane Hawks up b on the road who singled, scored on a tut oy perry Graham for Poplar Hill. With the Irish leading 2-1 in the bot - ton of the fifth, Poplar Hill tied the score on a Cliff Pierce hit and also by an Irish error. But in the top of the sixth Lucan scored as Brad Taylor walked and stole second and was driven home by a single from Cecil Nickles. Bob. Mills then shut down Poplar Hill and the Irish won 3-2 to pick up their fifth consecutive championship. During the series the Lucan club outhit Poplar Hill 41 to 24. Leading the way for the Irish was Brad Taylor who had seven hits and was suc- cessful in each game. He was follow- ed by Bob Smith with six, Brian Noyes and Jim Zimmer each with five and Vic Capitano and Kevin Lightfoot with four apiece. Poplar Hill's top batsmen were Al Campbell who hit safely in all five games with seven, Cliff Pierce had five and Kerry Graham had four hits. Lucan pitchers held Poplar Hill to 12 runs and struck out 40 Poplar Hill bat- ters as each hurler picked up a victory. See all of you next season. y two points this week The Exeter Hawks moved into a two-point lead in the northern division of the Western Junior "D" loop as they beat Mt. Brydges 7-3 at' the rec centre. Friday. It was the fourth win of the season for the locals, although ironically it was their first home win after manag- ing only a tie in three previous outings at the rec centre. The Hawks also have two ties to give them 10 points on the season, two more than the second place Brussels Bulls who beat Mitchell in their only weekend outing. Clinton Mustangs are in third with seven points after trouncing Seaforth. The Hawks hit the road for three games this weekend. They'll battle their namesakes in Mitchell in . a Hallowe'en contest and then face the southern division leading Bombers in Belmont, Saturday. The busy schedule is completed on Sunday with a contest in Thamesford. In Friday's victory, the Hawks jumped into a quick 2-0 lead as George Pratt found the range at the 1:22 mark and Dan Nairn followed on- ly 17 seconds later. However, the Bulldogs pulled back onto even terms as captain Tom Gib- son fired two successful shots behind Derek Switzer..-.._ ,... 'hie locals regained the lead Mth 19 seconds left in the opening stanza when Steve Batten found the range on a powerplay. - Scott Bogart upped the margin to two with another powerplay at the 8:52 mark of the second and then Jeff Reid and Steve Gould tallied to make the score 6-2 at the end of two. The teams traded powerplay goals in the third with Gould connecting for the Hawks for his second marker of the contest. Pratt ended up as high point man on the night for the Hawks as he add- ed three assists to his goal for four points. Steve McIntyre added two assists, as did Dale Timmermans, while single assists came off the sticks of Scott Lovie, Gould, Nairn, Mark Morrissey and Sean Whiteford. Switzer finished the game with 19 saves, while a duo of Mt. Brydges net - minders had 20 as the teams kept the shots on net to a comparatively low level. The Hawks sat out 15 of the 27 penalties called. The total included fighting majors and game miscon- ducts to Exeter's Scott Lovie and Dave Brock of the Bulldogs.
