It's probably some 25 years since YogaBerra made his famouswill play
an important part in the Boston performance in the final The other pleasant surprise comes from the Pittsburgh Penguins
statement of It ain't over until it's over.who lead the Patrick Division. One of the big reasons for the
penguins success to date is Mario Lemieux who has 24 points in
his first 10 games and is only a couple of points back of Wayne Gret-
zky for the league scoring lead.
The Quebec Nordiques-with the fourth best overdll record a year
ago are in first place in the Adams Division. That's no surprise.
The Montreal Canadiens are a different story with only eight points
in eight games.
Other clubs off to slow starts are the New York Islanders, New
York Rangers and Calgary Flames. Oh well, it's a long time until
next spring.
This year's major league playoff series and the World Series
games are prime examples of what the former Yankee catcher
was talking about.
Supporters of the Boston Red Sox are complaining about the way
their team lost Saturday night's game when it appeared they had
the World Series packed away in the bat bag.
Actually it was only squaring up of justice. Just remember back
to the American league playoffs when the California were within
one strike of knocking off the Red, Sox.
For the Mets it was a case of lightning striking twice. The
Houston Astros were also within one strike of eliminating the Mets
and advancing to the World Series.
While the playoffs in both leagues and the World Series have been
more exciting and certainly unpredictable than anyone could im-
agine, the calibre of play leaves plenty to be desired.
Sure there have been some great fielding plays, but a number
that shouldn't happen in the major leagues. These include not on-
ly fielding errors and mental errors, but, some decisions by the
managers which were hard to understand.
We would guess there have been more stolen bases in this World
Series than in most, mainly because of bad throws from the cat-
chers along with a number of tosses from the outfield that have
sailed to the backstop. One thing is sure, there have been more
errors than home runs.
From a spectator's standpoint this free wheeling type of play
is more exciting, but, hard on the nerves.
Due to the Sunday postponement this column is being written
before the seventh and deciding game is played.
In most instances, goats or potential goats usually redeem
themselves in future situations, so we would suggest, Bill Buckner
One bit of advice for those predicting the outcome of the
Ameri league east division in the spring of 1987, pick the Boston
Red Sox tdpnish in fourth place. That has been the fortune of the
previous pennant winner for the last five years.
Some NHL Surprises
The early weeks of the National Hockey League season have pro-
duced some surprises.
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
The Toronto Maple Leafs are continuing to show the promise
which sprouted up in the playoffs last spring and are currently in
first place in the Norris Division, although they have slipped a lit-
tle getting only one point in their last three outings.
The iron hand being held by Detroit Red Wings coach Jacques
Demers is apparently turning the fortunes of that team around.
Demers has been quick to send top players off to the minors for
a number of reasons.
• The Wings could improve their record this week as they play
teams in their own division three times. That's games against
Chicago, Minnesota and Chicago.

Good South Huron Performances
Athletes from South Huron District High School continue to do
well not only at the Huron -Perth conference level, but at WOSSA
and provincial competition. -
Cross country coach Joe Fulop will be taking his senior girls
team and midget girls champion Kim Van Dongen this weekend
to the all -Ontario meet in North Bay this weekend after winning
in WOSSA action.
For the first time in seven years, the South Huron girls failed
to win the WOSSA championship. Despite this the team and coach
Jim Workman should be congratulated on an excellent season.
Saturday they took West Elgin through 20 minutes of overtime
before losing the title in a shootout.
Saturday the Huron -Perth football finals will be played and both
South Huron teams are in the thick of things.
The junior Panthers will be playing at the South Huron field
against the Goderich Vikings and the senior club will be in the
lakeport town to take on the Vikings. Game times are 1:30 p.m.
Mohawks top Towers, host Harriston Blues Sunday
The Exeter Mohawks made their
only start of the week in the Ontario
Hockey Association Senior "B"
grouping a winning one as they down-
ed the New Hamburg Towers 8-4 Sun-
day night at the South Huron Rec
Centre.
The Mohawks are in for a tough
schedule this coming week. Friday
night they travel to Elora to take on
the Rocks who are undefeated in their
first three games. The next home
game at the South Huron Rec Centre
will be Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. with
the Harriston Blues supplying the
opposition.
At home Sunday night, the
Mohawks scored three times in the
first half of the first period and were
well on the way to victory. After the
Towers notched their first goal late in'
the opening stanza, each team scored
two goals in the middle 20 minutes of
play and in the final session, the
Mohawks outscored the opposition
three goals to one with all four com-
ing on power play attempts.
Veteran defenceman Barry
Baynham started the Mohawks scor-
ing for the night when the game was
five minutes and 26 seconds old with
Brian Mercer and Pete Tuckey
assisting.
In the next five minutes Al Gates
fired a pair of successful shots with
Norm Campbell and captain Randy
Kraul assisting on both. Ralph Zehr
put New Hamburg on the scoreboard
at 15:45.
Second period action saw Mike
Clark finish off a three-way passing
combination with Doug Latta and
Kris Bedard and Al Gates completed
his hat trick performance for the
night with passes provided by the
solid defensive combination of Steve

Second period marksmen for New
Hamburg were Dave Murphy and
Ralph Zehr.
The third period was only 32
seconds old when Randy Kraul found
the New Hamburg net on passes from
Steve Nelson and Bill Glover as Dave
Hallman of the opponents was
finishing off a penalty incurred late
in the second period.
Just two minutes later, the power
play situation was reversed and Ran-
dy Rausome beat Rick Pikul in the
Exeter net for the last time.
Late in the game, Ron Elliott chalk-
ed up an Exeter goal again with the
visitors shorthanded with Al Gates
