.Panthers meet Vikings
The South Huron Panthers and
Goderich Vikings will hook up on
Saturday to decide the junior and
senior Huron -Perth football
championships.
The local juniors, who have been
undefeated this season, will host their
counterparts from the county town at
the SHDHS field at 1:30 p.m.
At the same time, the two senior
teams will kick-off in Goderich as the
Vikings won home field advantage by
going undefeated.
In earlier games, the local juniors
squeaked past Goderich with a second
half rally, while the seniors were
beaten 8-0 by the Vikings in the only
loss for SHDHS.
The South Huron teams gained the
final as the juniors rallied for the se-
cond week in a row to post a 33-22 win
over Norwell in the semi-final, while
the seniors crushed Listowel 21-3 to
earn another attempt at wresting the
league title from Goderich.
Seniors play rough
The South Huron Senior Panthers
played their semi-final game of the
playoffs on Wednesday against the
Listowel Lords in what was a rough
game. The Panthers managed to
come out with a 21-3 score.
The South Huron crew could have
quite easily won very big over the
Lords but penalties hampered the
Panthers.
Surprisingly enough, the Lords
were the first to score on a 17 yard
field goal. This gave Listowel a 3-0
lead.
The Panthers were quick to res-
pond when tailback Bill "sweetness"
Fisher ran for 75 yards to pick up six
points. Jon O'Connor added the extra
point to give the Panthers a 7-3 lead.
The second quarter was scoreless
with each defensive unit testing one
another out. The offense on both
teams were playing equal with
neither being able to do much with the
ball.
In the second half the South Huron
squad, with a five yard rush by Bill
Fisher, scored again. Jon O'Connor
completed the extra point beefing the
score up 14-3.
Later, Scott Miller scored a single
with a booming 65 yard punt.
In the third quarter it was Sean
Whiteford smashing his way in from
four yards out for six points. O'Con-
nor added the convert giving the Pan-
thers a 21-3 win over the Listowel
Lords.
In the defensive department, Mar-
tin Reymer had nine key tackles,
John Relouw followed with eight and
Scott Heywood with seven. Mark
Penhale recovered a fumble.
On the offence Fisher had 164 yards
in 17 carries, Sean Whiteford follow-
ed with three yards in six carries.
The Panther specialty teams did a

Coach Ron Bogart was very dissap-

in many penalties. He stated that the
team looked good at times but bad at
others. He finished off by saying that
they must be,more aggressive on of-

Close call
The South Huron junior Panthers
almost got caught looking too far
ahead when they hosted Norwell in
the football playoff semifinal at the
Local school, Wednesday.
Having beaten the Palmerston
school by a wide count in regular
play, the juniors appeared to think
their appearance on the field would be
enough to send them into the final.
They trailed by 10 points in the third
quarter before taking advantage of
two costly Norwell turnovers to come
up with three straight touchdowns in
posting a 33-22 win.
Many mistakes almost cost the
squad a chance to host the loop final.
In the first half the Panthers were
ahead 6-1 and had the ball on the op-
position's one yard line when the ball
was fumbled• and a Palmerston
player picked it up and ran 109 years
for a touchdown. Palmerston also
scored at the end of the first half to
make the score 15-6 for the visitors.
In the second half the teams trad-
ed early touchdowns and then the
Panthers pickup up their pace and
scored three more touchdowns to
make the final score 33-22.
Jeff DenOtter scored three
touchdowns and Frank Wulterkens
had two and kicked a field goal. It was
the first field goal of the season.
DenOtter had an impressive game
with 229 yards on 22 carries.
Chris Haugh led the defence in
tackles and Glen McBeath and Doug
Clark played a good defensive game
as well. Ken Fitzgerald also played a
good game.
The Exeter players found it hard to
decide what the opposition's next play
would be because they had changed
a lot of their defensive moves,

October 16, 1986
Dear Editor:
On October 16, we attended a foot-
ball game at Exeter High School.' The
fans from Goderich, mainly parents,
with a few preschoolers, did their fair
share of cheering, but, were not
abusive in their actions.
Both teams played a very com-
petitive and exciting game, except for
one thing. When the fans from Exeter
High School started to cheer, not all
of them, but enough to leave a bad im-
pression on the Exeter school, they
were very foul mouthed in comments.
and actions. Polite suggestions to tone
it down were met by more swearing
and ignorant comments.
This continued all during the junior
game and carried on through the
senior game.
It is a shame that a group of
students can be that loud and
ignorant.
It spoiled an otherwise enjoyable
game of football, for the parents and
the remaining student body.
As a parent and a fan, I would take
my children to a Goderich home
game anytime, but, my children will
not attend an Exeter home game
again.

Bullets win
The Exeter Bullets picked up three
points in two Lambton-Middlesex pee
wee hockey games this week.
They edged Strathroy 2-1 in Sunday
action and a week earlier played to a
1-1 tie with Lucan.
In the victory over Strathroy,
Jeremy Brock notched the first goal
for the Bullets on an unassisted effort
and Brad Elsener it on a three-way
passing combination with Brad
Thompson and Kevin Johns.
The Bullet goal in the draw with
Lucan was fired by Mark Lynn on a
pass from Brad Thompson. For
Lucan Kyle Darling converted a pass
from Matthew Blay.

Call for schools
to stop fouding
When athletic teams from high
schools in Goderich and Exeter hook
up for competition in the future, of-
ficials at both schools hope there is no
continuance of the verbal abuse by
fans.
A letter to the editor appears in this
issue from some Goderich fans who
attended a football game at SHDHS
last week and found some local stu-
dent fans abusive in their actions.
In last week's issue of the Goderich
paper, SHDHS principal Bruce Shaw
admitted that many of the cheers
from his students "bordered on the
insulting".
"We have tried to inculcate a tone
at South Huron that centres on mutual
respect; unfortunately, there are
moments when the effort seems
wasted, but in spite of that, the
students at South Huron are excellent
people," he wrote.
"A good healthy rivalry between
schools is excellent, and probably
necessary for quality competition, but
the rivalry between Goderich and
South Huron has, over the years,
degenerated into a bitter feud that
goes beyond athletics. I believe all of
us as coaches, teachers, fans and
competitors have a responsibility to
end the stupidity. Let this incident be
the last!"
The SHDHS student council also
sent a letter to the Goderich
newspaper apologizing for the "rude
behaviour" of a few spectators at the
league game between the Panthers
and Vikings in Exeter.
"This type of conduct was un-
necessary, unsportsmanlike, -and
showed a lack of responsibility on the
part of the individuals in question,"
the letter continued.
"It is hoped by all, that this was an
isolated incident and will not reoccur
in future games between our respec-
tive high schools."
Another letter appeared carrying
the names of five South Huron
students who admitted to becoming
abusive to the visiting players and
fans and apologized "for our language
and the impression we created for our
school".
The feud between the . schools
reached the point at one stage in the
past where students from the visiting
school were prohibited from atten-
ding sports events,
School officials will probably. find
out on Saturday if their plea to halt
the feud has been successful, as foot-
ball squads from Goderich and
SHDHS will Meet for the Huron -Perth
conference championships.
An attempt by the South Huron
girls field hockey team to win the
WOSSA championship for the seventh
consecutive year just failed to
materialize, Saturday.
After breezing through the regular
schedule and Huron -Perth playoffs
without allowing a goal, the locals
defeated Ingersoll 2-1 and Medway 2-0
to reach the WOSSA final round.
South Huron and West Elgin battl-
ed to a 1-1 tie through three regulation
periods, an overtime period of 20
minutes failed to break the deadlock-
ed score.
At this point, five players from each
team were given penalty strokes and
West Elgin scored two goals while
South Huron faded to hit the opposing
net.
In the first two WOSSA games,
Mona Brand and Ronalynn Bell each
scored a goal as they defeated Inger-
soll and Medway.
Kim Crawford notched the only
goal in the final loss to West Elgin.
In the Huron Perth final Tuesday in
Exeter, South Huron blanked St.
Marys 3-0.
Scoring one goal each for the locals
were Lee O'Rourke, Joelle Lamport
and Mona Brand.

very successful week in Shamrock
league play as they downed the South
London Sabres 3-2, blasted Parkhill
