Cherry, Sittler to attend
It may seem like a long time to February, but, the 14th an-
nual Exeter Lions Sportsmen's dinner is only a short four months
away.
We got a very welcome call this week from dinner chairman
Brian Illman with good news about the upcoming dinner which con-
tinues to be a very popular event.
Not only do area sports fans get to meet a goodly number of
celebrities, but, probably most importantly they are able to sup-
port the worthwhile cause of crippled children.
Illman reports he already has confirmation on four speakers
for the February 3 dinner.
He already has written confirmation from Darryl Sittler, Don
Cherry and Marty Springstead and was told by telephone that
Brian McFarlane would be here to act as master of ceremonies.
No introduction is necessary for Cherry and Sittler. A former
NHL coach at Boston and Colorado, Cherry has carried on to be
a rather controversial figure on Hockey Night in Canada telecasts
with his forthright statements.
Darryl Sittler was one of the best captains the Toronto Maple
Leafs ever had and should attract plenty of attention here.
McFarlane has long been a host on the same telecasts and will
make an excellent introducer of guests.
The headline speaker will be former major league umpire
Marty Springstead who is now retired and serving as an umpir-
ing supervisor. He was never known for being speechless when on
1987. Lions Sportsmen's dinner
the field and has the reputation of being an excellent speaker. undefeated in Huron -Perth play and were in the Conference finals
Illman says he hopes to have most of the entire head table
lineup confirmed by Christmas and this would enable tickets to
be popular Christmas gifts.
Cost of the tickets remain at $35 for adults and $20 for students
and children. Part of the ticket prices are deductible for income
tax purposes.

Over the past 13 dinners, the Lions have donated close to
$100,000 to the Thames Valley Treatment Centre and for the benefit
of crippled children in Exeter and area.
Incidentally it is expected Blue will. accompany Don Cherry
during his February visit to Exeter and London.
SH Sports Successful
Athletes at South Huron District High School are enjoying a
very successful fall season.
Coach Jim Workman's girls field hockey team has gone
yesterday, Tuesday against St. Marys or Stratford Central.
In six league games the local girls have won six straight
games. They have scored 35 goals while goalie Tina Campbell has
yet to allow a score.
The first two teams in Huron -Perth play will be in Alymer this
weekend to participate in WOSSA playoffs.
The first game for South Huron is expected to be at 3 p.m. Fri-
day against a Middlesex winner. The final championship goes
Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Under the coaching of Jim Workman, the South Huron field
hockey girls have won innumerable Huron -Perth and WOSSA
championships and have been at the all -Ontario championships for
the last six consecutive years. The way they have been perform-
ing to date in 1986, there is no reason to believe they won't make
it seven in a row to OFSSA.
Joe Fulop's cross country runners have also fared very well.
Kim VanDongen won the Huron -Perth midget girls individual ti-
tle and the senior girls and senior boys won their respective team,
championships. They also advance to WOSSA action.
The Huron -Perth football playoffs begin here in Exeter Thurs-
day with both South Huron teams in action. The juniors with a win
over Goderich finished in first place and assured themselves of
home advantage for any final games. The seniors dropped a close
decision to the Vikings from Goderich and finished second.
