By Mary Chessell
Rev. Gordon Kurtz of Bayfield was
the guest speaker at Goshen United
Church's anniversary on Sunday. His
text was from John 15, the Parable of
the Vine. In the controversy over
whether personal enrichment and
salvation or social action is the impor-
tant aspect of one's religious life, he
pointed to the fact that the branch
dies if it is not firmly attached to the
vine, and if it does not bear fruit, it
is pruned. Therefore, Christians must
have a firm and constant relationship
with God, and will then proclaim their
faith and live for others, bearing the
fruits of their faith.
The congregation enjoyed the
choir's special music and Julie Arm-
strong's beautiful solo "Be Thou My
Vision".
The warm hospitality of the Goshen
people was enjoyed by many of their
visitors who were invited to their
homes for dinner.
Bible Study begins

going to Don Taylor's birthday party
at the Bayview Restaurant, Bill and
I were astonished to find the room full
of our friends, some of whom don't
know Don. A lovely big sign confirm-
ed that the celebration was indeed for
us.
The party was planned by Pat and
Barry Taylor, Sharon Chuter and
June Webster, and hosted by the
Taylors following an excellent dinner
at the Bayview. We were presented
with a beautiful domed clock, and an-
niversary cake and ice cream was
served.
We were touched by the
thoughtfulness of those who planned
the happy celebration. Guests were
present from Rostock, Bornholm,
Mitchell, Hensall, Bayfield and Var-
na. It's surprising that someone didn't
"let the cat out of the bag", as we had
contact during the week with quite a
number of people who knew about it.
We hope Don had a happy birthday,
too.
