Exciting university hockey at
We have good news for the many area hockey fans who took in
the two university playoff games at the South Huron Rec Centre
last spring.
The two teams that 'provided very exciting action will be back
at the Rec Centre tomorrow night, Thursday to meet in a pre-
season exhibition game.
That's right the Western Mustangs will be meeting the Wilfrid
Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is 8:30 p.m. The game is be-
ing sponsored by the Exeter and district junior Hawks. Dave
Bogart, coach of the Hawks this year was with the Golden Hawks
a few seasons back.
For those with short memories, the Golden Hawks eliminated
the Mustangs in double overtime in a real thriller here in February.
There is no reason to believe tomorrow night's contest will not be
as exciting.
Last season, the Mustangs had 15 rookies and not much was ex-
pected of them. The story should be a little different this year with
17 returning players in the lineup.
Western coach Barry Martinelli says his club has all the ingre-
dients to win an OUAA championship. Of course, Laurier will have
a lot to say about that.
Of special interest to local fans will be the appearance of Western
captain Chris McCauley who was an OUAA all star last season.
Chris is the son of Terry McCauley, a former general manager of
the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority. Chris played his first
hockey in Exeter at the age of six.
Phil Carter who was with the St. Marys Lincolns last year is a
right wing candidate with the Mustangs.
About his team coach Martinelli says,"We have a little more
depth, we don't have a lot of size but we make up for it with our

speed. We also don't play like a small team. I think we will be able
to wear people out with our speed and our depth,."
All in all it should be an outstanding game and It ithoped a large
crowd will attend to support the Hawks in this fund raising venture.
Norm. Cash Passes
It's distressing to hear of the death of former Detroit Tiger star
Norm Cash in a drowning accident on the weekend

when they won the World Series championship in 1968. He won the
American league batting title in 1961 with a mark of .361. Since
then only three others have exceeded the .361 mark. They are Rod
Carew, George Brett and Wade Boggs.
We certainly remember Cash from the '68 World Series. He was
the one that kept all the reporters laughing around the batting cage
before the games in Detroit.
The subject got around to the most valuable player in the Series
and Cash said, "It will be Tim McCarver. He's caught every strike
Bob Gibson has thrown."
Cash knew what he was talking about. In the first game of the
series, Gibson struck out 17 Tigers to set a record and leash was
the final Detroiter to fan.
Four members of the Tiger team of 1968 have now passed away.
The others are manager Mayo Smith, Ray Oyler and Joe Sporma.
A Skating Clinic
The Lucan figure skating club is sponsoring a skating clinic this
Sunday, October 19 at the Lucan Community Centre.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. former Canadian figure skating star Don
Jackson will be in charge of the clinic. Spectators will be more than
welcome to drop in and have a look.
More Good Hockey
In addition to the university game, the Exeter junior Hawks will
be at home to Seaforth in a regularly scheduled Junior "D" game
Friday night.and Sunday night the Exeter Mohawks play host to
the Hillsburg Royals in their first Senior "B" home game.
Football, Too
Football fans wishing to see good action could do a lot worse than
drop up to the South Huron field this Thursday afternoon to watch
a pair of Huron -Perth 'games.
The Goderich Vikings will be in town to meet the Panthers in
both the junior and senior divisions. First place will be at stake
in both games.
Friday afternoon, the strong South Huron field hockey team will
be playing at home in a Huron -Perth semi-final playoff game.
The girls field hockey team under the direction of coach Jim
Workman have long been at the top of the H -P scene and this year
appears to be no exception.

After suffering their first loss of the
season and then having to rally for a
tie in their two weekend home games,
the Exeter Hawks made their first
jaunt on the road Tuesday and got
things back into gear with a 6-4 win
over the defending OHA champion
Seaforth Centenaires.
The victory set the team's record at
two wins, a loss and two ties and kept
them in the hunt for top spot in the
northern division.
The locals will host the Centenaires
in Friday's home contest at the rec
centre and Sunday afternoon they'll
face the Mustangs in Clinton.
Makes Debut
Brad Bender made his first league
debW in the nets for Exeter in Tues-
day's game in Seaforth and turned
aside 36 shots in recording the win.
Derek Switzer had back -stopped the
first four games because of a delay in
getting Bender's card from the OHA.
Rookie Dan Nairn paced the attack
with a pair of markers and singles
came off the sticks of Steve McIntyre,
Scott Bogart; Steve Gould and George
Pratt. 'I he latter's was into an emp-
ty net with one second left in the
contest.
Bryan Quinn helped out on two
goals and single assists were record -

The Hawks spotted the defending
champs an early powerplay marker
and then McIntyre evened the count
on a short-handed effort and Nairn
fired another first period goal to give
them a lead they never relinquished.
Exeter sat out 19 of the 35 penalties
called and gave up two powerplays
while recording one of their own.
Bombed by Belmont
In their Friday night home contest,
the Hawks' fell behind 3-2 in the first
period to the Belmont Bombers and
continued to fall. behind throughout
the contest as the visitors doubled the
count on the locals with an 8-4 victory.
Ron Tales, released the night
before by the St. Thomas Stars of the
Junior "B" group, did most of the
damage as he scored twice and set up
two other tallies.
The Bombers out -shot the Hawks
by a 40-25 margin.
Dave Cassone potted a pair for Ex-
eter, including one of the two
powerplay tallies the squad
registered. Jeff Pfaff and Jon O'Con-
nor notched the singles.
The latter two also picked up assists
as did Dale Timmermans, George
Pratt, Sean Whiteford and Scott
Lovie.
