Riverview InStitute learn about postal codes, laminating
The Riverview Women's Institute
have had two good meetings so far
this fall in the Masonic Hall in Ailsa
Craig. The president Mrs. Evelyn
McNaughton, began both with the
ususal Instituteopening, along with a
story and a household hint.
At the September meeting, Mrs.
Ruth Stevens, postmistress in Ailsa
Craig explained the postal code, and
the use of the computer in sorting
mail. She also gave us a number of
commonly -used codes such as for the
hospitals, to speed our letters through
the system. For our roll call at this
meeting, we brought old post cards
which brought back many memories,
some even as far back as 1916, and
written by a soldier in France to his
"love".
Esther Craven, in her motto, told
why a "letter is a good way to visit a
friend". With the scripture by Marie
Campbell, and a humorous reading
by Jean McKichan, the convener for
this program, a good time was had by
all. Of course, when Ruth McCallum
and her committee brought out a
variety of buttered homemade muf-
fins, it was even better.
In the business sessions of these
meetings, it was reported that our bag
of "craft material" had been
delivered to the Children's Hospital of
Western Ontario, and they are asking
for finger puppets and baking for
their bazaar on November 24 at the
Eaton Centre Mall. A wooden pen
holder, made and donated by Ervin
Gingerich, was displayed and will be
used by our guest book. The Institute
has had a plaque engraved and put on
it, "In Memory of Alice V. Dickens,
a valued members of Riverview W.I.
1986.
Evelyn reported on the fun Irish
evening held at South Lobo recently,
and also passed around information
on the W.I. in P.E.I., our twin for this
year. The Ross Butler Project to
supply the schools with farm animal
pictures, a set for each school, was ex-
plained, and a motion to give a con-
tribution to this endeavour was
passed.
Esther Craven and Wilma McIn-
tosh will be the delegates for the Area
Convention at the Ukrainian Hall on
October 16 and 17, respectively. At
least four other members will also at-
tend. Mrs. Alie Twynstra offered to
supply a craft for their craft table.
The president told of the
Neighbourhood Welcome Committee
which is being launched by the local
Ministerial, and Gertrude Rosser and
the president will see that information
about Institute work, and Riverview's
programs in particular, is added to
the Packet. Margaret Wilson and
Evelyn McNaughton will represent
Riverview at the Leadership
Workshop on "Short Order Meals",
sponsored by the Rural Organizations
and Services Branch of OMAF, to be
held at Arva on November 4.
Invitations were accepted with
thanks from Lucan to attend their
meeting at the Villa on October 14
when Rev. Jean Morris will speak on
the topic, "Thanks, but no thanks":
Margaret Wilson read an invitai,tion
from the local Library re an Open
House to be held on October 23; and
an invitation to Beechwood W.I. on
November 11 when Evelyn
McNaughton will shove pictures, and
Lioness start
new season
The Exeter Lioness met September
22 to kick off their new 1986-87 season.
The new executive for the year is as
follows: president, Joyce Eveland,
first vice-president, Liz Bell, second
vice-president, Rosemary Straw and
third vice-president Joan Hunking.
Secretary, Marg Prout, treasurer
Linda Oliver, and Tail Twister Laurie
Dykstra.
The Eastern Star ladies group serv-
ed an excellent meal and it was en-
joyed by all. After the meal, the guest
speaker was John Gibson of Exeter.
Ile had very interesting thoughts of
the world today as he is a world
traveller of years gone by andnowhas
come to retire in Exeter. Mr. Gibson
was teen thanked by.a small token.
After the guest speaker they install-
ed the new members, Patti Sin-
naman, Ann Thompson and Wendy
Long. After welcoming of new
members, it was business as usual.
Lioness Joyce Eveland read an in-
vitation from twin club in the United
States to meet half way for a dinner
and it was decided by the club that
October 27 was a good date. The
meeting will be in Sarnia, having the
next business on the bus on the way
there.
tell of her trip to Bangkok, Thailand,
and the island of Bali.
For her program speaker in Oc-
tober, Sadie Walker, convener for
Agriculture and Canadian Industries,
invited Mrs. Wendy McLarty, who,
with her husband, operate a
• ..aminating business just south of
Ailsa Craig, and have expanded to a
staff of nine. They are very busy now
making woodlaminated beams for ex-
port to the U.S. Through Wendy's
pleasant manner, description and pic-
tures, we got a good insight into this
relatively new local business. The
program was rounded off with a
humourous reading by Olive Currie,
entitled, "A Farmer's Prayer", the
scripture reading of Psalm 100 by
Ruby McLean, thoughts on Agri -food
Week by Sadie, and several good
household hints prepared by Greta
George. •
The Riverview W.I. decided to hold
their annual fall dessert euchre in the
Masonic Hall on Tuesday, October 28
at 1:15. Watch for the ads, A tasty
lunch was served by Leona Hughes
and her committee.
The next meeting will be at the
Craigholme Lounge on November 4 at
1:30 p.m.
Every new opinion, at its starting, is
precisely in a minority of one.
