Crystal ball says Astros and Angels in series
Molting, but, still flying
With the local hockey season well underway for most teams,
the Exeter Molting Harks are also preparing for a full schedule.
The team made up of 35 year-olds or more have lined up an
ambitious schedule of 24 home games. With away contests and a
number of tournaments planned, the overall number of games
could be as high as 60.
• Coach Wayne Pearce has the exact roster back from a year
ago, meaning they all came through the summer in good shape.
The first home game for the Molting Hawks is set for Monday
night, October 13 at the South Huron Rec Centre with the London
Firebirds supplying the opposition.
Kick boxing set
Especially those who attended a recent kick boxing and karate
demonstration at the South Huron Rec Centre will be interested
to learn that a title fight has'been set up for Leo Loucks.
Loucks, who was at the local event will be defending his world
pro -kickboxing championship at the London Gardens on Sunday
afternoon October 26 at 2 p.m.
The opponent for Loucks will be fourth rated Mark Gurley from
Cocoa Beach, Florida. Ron Day, formerly of Exeter and operator
of Ron Day's Family Academy of Self Defence in Kitchener is
Louck's manager and in charge of promotions.
More racing records
Local harness racing owner Bob Hamather is back in the
limelight with a record performance by his talented two year-old
filly pacer No No Abby.

Hawks
When the Exeter Hawks were being
rebuilt after last year's disastrous
season, the emphasis was on boosting
inadequacies behind the blue line.
Results of their first two season
games on the weekend indicate some
major strides were made in that
regard, as the locals gave up only
three goals in posting a 1-1 tie against
Brussels and beating Mitchell 5-2.
The three points put the Hawks on
top of the northern division of the
Western Junior "D" loop where they
wallowed in the basement last season.
Friday's home opener at the rec
centre against the Bulls featured a
netminding battle between Hawks
rookie Derek Switzer and Pat Camp-
bell of the visitors.
Switzer ended up with 26 saves,
while Campbell was a bit busier as he
posted 29. The latter was particular-
ly sharp in the third period as the
Hawks dominated play but couldn't
get the winner.
Exeter struck for the first goal in
the opening frame when rookie Jon
O'Connor connected on a powerplay
with Scott Bogart and Dale Timmer-

Jean Poulin set the Canadian record for two year-old pacing fillies
on a five -eights mile track at Greenwood on September 1 in 1.57.2.
The Hamather filly went on to Lexington's Red Mile in Ken-
tucky and won the Almahurst Stud event in 1.54.4. This time was
also a track and stakes record. Ron Waples was in the sulky for
both record breaking events.
Crystal ball look'
It's about time to take a look into the crystal ball and make
our predictions on the upcoming baseball playoffs and World Series
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
so our readers can make wagers on the opposite clubs.
It a nutshell it will be the Houston Astros and the California
Angels meeting in baseball's annual fall classic with the first game
slated for October 20.
Now that the Blue Jays are not in the post -season action, we
are choosing the Astros and the Angels because each club has one
Canadian on its roster. Terry Puhl from Western Canada is with
Houston and the number two man on the California pitching staff
is Kapaskasing born Kirk McAskill.
In getting a little more serious, the Houston pitching staff, has
improve on defense, yet
mans drawing the assists.
Brussels evened the count in the se-
cond when they also found the range
on a powerplay.
Sunday's game against Mitchell
was played at Huron Park and the
local Hawks scored four powerplay
tallies against their namesake& in
their first win of the season.
The game was extremely chippy
and the third period was slowed con-
siderably by a constant parade to the
DOWN AND IN Exeter Hawks Stove Gould is on the seat of his pants in front of the Mitchell net,
but the check came too late to prevent him from notching his second goal of the game in Sunday's 5-2
win over Mitchell. George Pratt raises his stick to signal the tally, while Jim Lewis (14) is on the right.

been almost unbeatable in the last couple of weeks and there is
no mason to believe things will change. Sunday, Bob Knepper
retired 15 in a rowfor the Astros before being taken out to be rested
for the upcoming playoff series and Mike Scott recently threw a
no-hitter.
For the Red Sox it will be trouble all the way, especially if
Roger Clements and Wade Boggs are not healthy.
Best of everything
A recent story in the Toronto Star by writer Neil McCarl lists
the results of a best of everything poll conducted among the
managers in both major leagues.
Two Blue Jay made the American league list. They were Tony
Fernandez as the best defensive infielder and Jesse Barfield with
the best outfield arm.
It's interesting to note in the class for best pickfili` moves by
a right handed pitcher, they were both knuckleballers, Phil Niekro
and Charlie Hough. Mike Flanagan of Baltimore is the best
southpaw picker -offer.
To no one's surprise Wade Boggs is the best two -strike hitter
and Don Mattingly the most dangerous. Gerry Hairston of the
White Sox is the best pinch hitter and Wally Joyner of the Angels
the best hitting prospect. Don Baylro of the Red Sox is the best
designated hitter.
The Detroit Tigers have two representatives. They are Darnell
Coles with best infield arm and Tom Brookens as the best utility
player.
Ray Boone of the Angels was selected as the best throwing cat-
cher and the smartest player in the league.
win and draw
penalty box.
There were four fights in the final
20 minutes and the teams played two
men short for much of the final 10
minutes of the stanza.
George Pratt started the Hawks off
to their win in the early part of the
.opening stanza when he scored on the
team's first powerplay attempt. Jeff
Pfaff and Jim Lewis drew the assists.
The teams traded single markers in
the second as Dan Nairn found the
range for Exeter after Mitchell had
cut the lead to one goal.
Powerplay goals by Jeff Reid and
Gould rounded out the Exeter scoring
in the third, both coming on
powerplays. Reid's came with Exeter
enjoying a two-man advantage. The
latter also assisted on one of the goals
as did Bryan Quinn, Dale Timmer -
mans and Jeff Dalrymple.
Mitchell's final tally was on a short-
handed effort after an Exeter
defender was stripped of the puck and
given a free lane to Switzer. The lat-
ter recorded 27 saves.
Mitchell sat out 30 penalties, while
Exeter had 25. Scott Lovie, Jeff Pfaff
and Jeff Dalrymple were banished for
fighting along with three Mitchell
combatants.
The local Hawks will enjoy two
more home games this weekend
before they hit the road. Belmont
Bombers will be here on Friday and
the Mitchell Hawks will be back for
their rematch on Sunday at 7:30.
First road trip for the squad will
come on Tuesday when they travel to
Seaforth to meet the defending OHA
champion Centenaires.

volleyball team
The SHDHS boys volleyball played
in a tournament Wednesday in Clin-
ton. They lost their first two games to
Stratford Central and then split both
of their matches with St. Marys and
Central Huron to a game each.
On Saturday, the team travelled to
Walkerton for a tournament. The
team placed third in round robin play
after playing against Norwell, Arthur
and Sacred Heart. They lost to Arthur
in the semi-final and ended up third.
overall.
Coach Joe Jankowski said "for an
inexperienced team they played very
well" and also that he sees great im-
provement with each tournament
played.
