In the article Shaw said, "I'm very confident. I know I can play regularly in the NHL and until someone shows me proof to the con- trary, I know I have my spot with the Nordiques." Shaw said he wasn't worried about the sophomore jinx which is quite prevalent in sports. He added, "I'm participating in my fourth training camp with the Nordiques, so I don't really consider myself a second season man. The only thing .1 do think about is the injury aspect of the game. If only I could stay healthy all season." He missed the last few games of the regular schedule and the playoffs in the 1985-86 season due to a wrist injury. Baseball Tidbits This is the last column during the regular schedule of the major league baseball season and we will submit a variety of items of interest. We don't know about his year, but during the 1985 season Wade Boggs of the Boston Red Sox popped up only once to the infield in fair territory and that was against Doyle Alexander of the Blue Jays. It took the last three weeks of the season to produce the only two no-hitters. They were tossed September 19 by Joe Cowley of the Chicago White Sox and Friday night by Mike Scott of the Houston Astros. In watching the Jay -Red Sox game Friday night on TSN it was interesting to hear the name of Dennis Overholt of Zurich as the winner of a trip for two to Disney World. This is only the second time in the history of Major league baseball that four members of one infield could hit 20 home runs and 80 runs batted in. That possibility exists with the Detroit Tigers who have Drwight Evans at 29, Darnell Coles 19 and Lou Whittaker 19 and Allan Trammell 20. All have 80 RBI's or more. The only time this feat was actually acco+irtplished was in 1940 Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh by the Boston Red Sox. The players were first baseman Jimmy Foxx 36 and 119, second sacker Bobby Doerr 22 and 105, shortstop Joe Cronin 24 and 111 and hot corner defender Jim Tabor 21 and 81. So far this season Tony Fernandez of the Blue Jays has made only 12 errors and over 200 base hits. Now 206 to be exact. That's a lot of hits for a shortstop. The Los Angeles Dodgers game this week postponed was only the llth time in 25 years that rain has caused cancellation of a game at Dodger Stadium. In the same vein, four members of this year's Boston Red Sox have or are close to hitting 40 or more doubles. They are Wade Boggs, Bill Buckner, Marty Barrett and Jim Rice. The only two other clubs to accomplish were the 1929 Detroit Tigers and 1932 Philadelphia Phillies. The Tigers of '29 were Charlie Gehringer and Roy Johnson 45 each, Dale Alexander 43 and Harry Hellmann 41. New Stephen Nets Stephen township arena manager Frank Funston tells us new maganets are being installed this week. They are being purchas- ed through donations from the Derek Vandergunst Memorial Sports Fund and the'Stephen rec hockey league. Local Hockey This Week A busy season of junior and senior hockey at the South Huron Rec Centre begins this weekend with three consecutive games. The Exeter junior Hawks start things off Friday night with their first regular season game against the Brussels Bulls, a team which won four of six exhibition games. President Ron Bogart and manager Dan Brintnell and coach Dave Bogart are excited about their team's chances. The senior Bogart says the acquisition of goalies Derek Switzer and Brad Bender will help along with a much improved inpressive defen- sive corps and more speed and muscle up front. The Exeter Mohawks moving up to senior "B" category will host the Chatham Pontiacs at 8 p.m., Saturday night and the Owen Sound Royals Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. Both opposing teams for the Mohawks this weekend are in senior "A" ranks. The Mohawks beat Owen Sound 9-6 Sunday night. At home to Brussels New Hawks team ready for Friday's opener Fans attending Friday's home opener for the Exeter Hawks will cer- tainly need a program to identify the players; as rookie coaches Dave Bogart and Steve Prout have only seven players back from last year's squad. The exhibition series, completed on the weekend, also indicates those fans , may be in for some pleasant surprises after last year's rather dismal show- ing,in which the locals failed to make the playoffs. The Hawks rattled off three im- pressive exhibition wins this week and ended their six -game set with a total of four wins, one loss and a tie. Two rookies will be handling the netminding chores. Derek Switzer, a graduate of the St. Marys minor system and a resident of the Kirkton- Woodham area, will share the duties wit rr Brad, Bender, who did his backstopping,iu Parkhill. Jiff Pfaff is the only returning defenceman from a corps that had some problems last season. The Hawks have Dale Timmerman back in the lineup after he was shunted to the Thedford Browns. Returning from a one-year stint with the Belmont Bombers is local minor product Steve Batten. Forwards Scott Bogart and Sean Whiteford are also making the transition back to the bluelinealong with Exeter minor products Mark Morrissey and Jeff Dalrymple. Roun- ding out the brigade is Mike Day, a student at Centralia College who hails from Glencoe. Returning to the forward lines are Dave Skea, Steve Gould, George Pratt and Steve McIntyre. They'll be joined by two St. Marys graduates, Jeff Reid and Dan Nairn, and local pucksters Jim Lewis, Jon O'Connor, Scott Lovie and Bryan Quinn. The other forward is Dave Cassone, a former Stratford Junior "B" Culliton. The Brussels Bulls will provide the opposition for Friday's home opener at the rec centre and on Sunday the -Hawks will be ny.Huron Park to face their namesakes' from Kitchell in - their second outing.
