A!Its...'?`........................................... ..... ::y
A funny thing happened the other
.day. I turned into a teacher --
something I said I'd never be.
As I was growing up, I always felt
that people were nudging me towards
becoming a teacher. It always hap-
pened at family picnics - my tall
cousins would bend over to talk to me
and say, "Is this our next teacher?"
Just because my grandmother was a
teacher, my mother had re -joined the
workforce as a teacher and my older
sisters were teachers, everyone
assumed that I should be a teacher,
too. Flaunting my individuality, 1
said, "No".
Last winter I was offered a part
time job teaching at Fanshawe Col-
lege. At first, I found it to be nothing
but hard work with little job satisfac-
tion. But as the semester progressed,
the situation improved.
So when I was offered a full time
position teaching English to first year
students at the college, 1 agreed to
take it. The work actually could be in-
teresting and rewarding, I decided. I
would have to make it interesting, and
perhaps the students' response would
be my reward.
Just one problem -- how do you
make grammar, spelling and
sentence structure interesting? I'm
stall working on that one.
'there are rewarrds. There is
nothing better than seeing a student
nod in agreement when you're ex-
plaining a topic. He understands what
you're saying and knows why you're
saying it.
On theother hand there is nothing
worse than seeing a student roll his
eyes and slowly shake his head.
There is nothing better than seeing
a student's confused look disappear
and light come into his eyes. "Oh, you
mean 'its' is a rossessive pronoun, but
it doesn't need an apostrophe," he
says.
But there is nothing worse than
carefully explaining a point --
"Gerunds always take possessive" --
and have 33 blank faces staring back
at you. Then you ask, "What is a
gerund?" and 33 heads shake.
Discouraged, you start the lesson
again, trying a new angle.
Equally discouraging is when you
carefully explain the lesson, the
students understand it thoroughly,
but they don't believe it. No one was
ever as skeptical as the first year col-
lege student.
Fortunately the answers are fully
explained in the back of the text -- I
do have an ally. The text book and 1
are able to win most arguments.
Suddenly, I feel like a teacher. I can
actually stand up and talk for an hour
about the joys of apostrophes. And
surprisingly enough, the students
seem interested.
