week's rainstorms ruin the apple crop so ripe and red, ready for harvesting. So much water was on
'the ground she paddled 300 ft. into the orchard in a little row boat to retrieve baskets of apples that
were floating around after being knocked prematurely from the trees by the winds. The apples were
perfect after landing in water, since they had no bruises like windfalls would have.
New fashions for fall
paraded at Playhouse
It rained and it rained all day
Wednesday. Fearing that the deluge
may have cancelled the Playhouse
Ladies Guild fashion show scheduled
for that evening, a quick call to the
Playhouse office to inquire was
answered by Board Chairman Dave
Sheppard.
"It's all systems go" he declared,
"do come on out, there's lots of dock-
ing space for everyone".
That's exactly what the many sup-
porters did, and they were treated to
a most enjoyable evening, beginning
with a wine and cheese reception in
the lounge, then into the main theatre
for the Susan J. fashion show4Ising
some of the white and silver stage set
from the recent hit musical Annie, the
stage was further enhanced with
floral displays created by Joanne Din-
ney, courtesty of Country Flowers,
Exeter, The vibrant fuschia backdrop
was a perfect complement to the rich
elegance of Susan J's fall selection of
ladies fashions.
President of the Playhouse Guild,
Mary Harvey, can be justifiably pro-
ud of the efforts of this fashion show
convener Nan Freel and her co -
convener Betty Densmore and the
many helpers who sold tickets and
gathered donated door prizes. The
show played to an 85 percent capaci-

ty audience. It was reported to have
raised over $2500, which is more than
any other single fund-raising event
that the Guild has done.
When master of ceremonies Dave
Sheppard questioned the gathering as
to whether they preferred one large
fall fashion show or two smaller
shows of spring and summer fashions
the audience applause was the same
- they liked both.
Wednesday's presentation here in
Grand Bend was commentated by
Susan Sharpe, owner of the four well-
known stores in London, where the
main Susan J. fashions boutique is
located at Oxford and Richmond
Streets.
Drawing from the extensive selec-
tion of both imported and Canadian
designed clothes carried in the shops,
Susan put forward a comprehensive
selection for the Playhouse audience,
something for nearly every occasion.
Afternoon dresses, elegant sport-
swear, business suits, coats and
cocktail dresses were all featured.
This talented Guild also delighted
the assembly with four of its
members taking part as models. Joy
Hogg from St. Joseph is well known
in local fashion shows; Milvi
Iskauskas was previously a profes-
sional model and now owns the Grand
Bend boutique Inspirations; Fran
Levie and Beth Jean are also Grand
Bend residents. The other four models,
came from London and all were aid
ed, behind the scenes by nine dresser
who were Guild members as well.
To summarize Susan's fall fashion
messages: skirts are longer, much
longer, lean with slits or flare at the
bottom; shoulders ate more rounded
and jackets slightly shaped but still
the large oversized easy look; the
most desired fabrics this season are
washable knits or butter soft lamb
suede, sometimes stencilled to rep-
resent reptile or croc skin; layering
is still featured with longer coats often
with belted or pleated back detail;
most outstanding were the colours.
This fall it is rich jewel tone shades
in sapphire, turquoise and ruby; the
basic is grey or deep taupe, as well as
winter white.
Before moving back to the lounge
to end the evening with more wine
and cheese, many draws were made
for the door prizes which were
donated by Christmas Place, Farmer
Bill's Flowers, White's Pharmacy,
Sanders on the Beach, Rings Strings
and Things, Young Classics Hair
Salon, St. Joseph's Country Store,
Gammage Flowers and the Red
Pump, Bayfield.

Tiger n.Ites wfa tltle
The Grand Bend Tigers mites soft-
ball team captured the "A" title last
Monday night, winning three games
straight. Three seems to be their
lucky number as they won the last
game 3-2 with all three runs being
homers.
The number one team also finish-
ed up the season with a record of nine
out of ten wins. Hats off to coaches
Jerry VanBruaene and Garry Desjar-
dine and team members Terri -Lynn
Luther, Murray McKay, Troy Stell-
ingwerff, Andrew Sharen, Jason and
Eric Clay, Simon Desjardine, Trent
Stellingwerff, Cary Gallant, Denielle
VanBruaene, and Jason Woodley.
Lieury pitcher Jimmy Rutten real-
ly kept the Tigers penned down. The
lucky hitters of the three home runs
were Cary Gallant, Simon Desjardine
and Trent Stellingwerff. Congratula-
tions team!
There are eight teams in the mites
(ages 8-10 years) league with the
Grand Bend Tigers finishing in first
place, Lieury second, Poplar Hill
third, Pt. Franks fourth, GB Jays
fifth, Shipka sixth, Parkhill and then
Nairn.
Squirts edged
The Grand Bend squirt softball
team lost two games last weekend,
one in overtime, and one in the final
minutes of regular play.
In Saturday's match it was a pit-
cher against pitcher as the two teams
finished with a 2-2 tie after seven in-
nings. GB pitcher Shane Green was
outstanding at the mound in both
games. Jeff Lingard came up with a
number of good catches on the defen-
sive side as well.
Mark Mollard and Chad Patterson
were the big hitters in Saturday's
game, with Joe Larkin knocking out
two doubles, a single and one RBi in
Sunday's match. The final scores
were 4-2 in extra innings and 3-2 on
Sunday. What a finish! Congratula-

Begin fall programs
The September meeting of the
Grand Bend Womens Institute will be
held in the Sunday School rooms of
the United Church at 7:30 p.m. on
Thursday, September 18.
The roll call will be to name one of
the counties of Ontario. Guest speaker
will be Angela Nethery, the new
Huron County Dairy Princess.
Visitors are welcome.
With the arn'valtof wvgat appears to
be monsoon season, it may be prudent
to reinvest your shares and futures in
the construction of an ark. Does
anyone out there know a really good
boat builder who can handle really
large craft? For plans and specifica-
tion, consult Genesis 6, Old Testa-
ment. Then perhaps we won't all
wash away in this rain.
Tis also the season for clubs,
classes and associations to resume
regular programming. The Grand
Bend Art Club will be starting its fall
classes shortly, for any aspiring ar-
tists out there wishing to try their
skills in oil, water or acrylic paints,
pottery painting, etc. An artist of
reknown, will be on hand for profes-
sional instruction and advice. The
classes will be held in the Grand Bend
Town Hall, dates and schedules soon
to be released. For more information

Attention parents! Registration for
Girl Guides and Brownies was Tues-
day September 16 at St. John's

would be happy to oblige. Brownies
are girls in the six to nine year
old range, and their leader is Mrs.
Margret Brauer, 238-5119. They usual-
ly meet on Tuesday evenings, at St.
John's Anglican Hall. Guides are girls
from nine to 12 years, and they meet
on Monday evenings at the Anglican
Hall. The Guide leader is Mrs. Paula
Taylor, 238-8732.
Registration for the Boy Scouts will
take place on September 22, 7 p.m.,
at the Grand Bend Public School,
where all their meetings are held.
Beavers are lads from five to seven
years old, Cubs from eight to ten
years and Scouts from 11-13 or so. The
Scouts are in real need of a leader this
year, with good on-the-job training
