HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1986-09-10, Page 10Page 10 Times -Advocate, September 10, 1986 Hawks, Irish in different Junior 'D' groupings The number of Junior "D" hockey teams participating in the coming hockey season in the province of Ontario has been reduc- ed to 16 teams and only three leagues. There are a couple of changes affecting the two divisions of the Western Junior "D" League. Two teams from last year's northern division have changed leagues.. The Tavistock Braves are heading south to join the Southern Counties grouping along with teams such as Delhi, Langton, Waterford, St. George and Six Nations while the Howick team has disbanded. With these two clubs vacating the northern group, the Exeter Hawks are moving back from the southern division and will be competing against Mitchell, Clinton, Brussels and Seaforth. The southern section will consist of the Lucan Irish, Thedford, Thamesford, Belmont and Mount Brydges. A lot of the rivalry built up in recent years for provincial playoffs in the junior "D" circles will be missing this year as Grand Valley has moved up one notch to Junior "C". That also means that there will be new competition in the an- nual junior Hawks tournament early in January. Although Brussels won the 1986 event, Grand Valley had been in the winners circle quite frequently. The change in the two local groupings will cut down on the rivalry between the Exeter Hawks and the Lucan Irish. As they will now be in different divisions they will play each other only on two oc- casions during the regular schedule. Each team plays single home and home games against clubs in the other grouping and four times each at home and away within their own section. Exeter Hawks Coach Dave Bogart of Exeter Hawks is continuing with a very extensive practice schedule to get his youngsters in the best of physical condition. Workouts are set for the Stephen township arena at Huron Park tomorrow night, Thursday from 9 to 11 p.m. and follow on, September 14. 16. 21 and 23. Lucan Irish The Lucan Irish juniors are taking to the ice this week for their first practices in preparation for the 1986-87 hockey season. Manager Jim Hearn and coach Ed Parkinson expect most of last year's players to be back for another term. He added, "The only Express reach league fine The Exeter Express scored a 17-10 victory over Walkerton Sunday in Ilanover to win their Great Lake - Western Ontario -London senior baseball league semi-final in straight games. The Express now go on to meet Strathroy for the league championship. The first two games of a best of five series will be played in Strathroy this week. The third and possible fourth contests will go Sun- day in Exeter beginning at 10 a.m. In Sunday's contest, both teams confined most of their scoring to the seventh and final inning. In the top of the final frame, the Express scored nine times to go in front by a score of 17-4, but, in their final bat, Walkerton sent six runners across the plate to make the score a little closer. The Express opened the scoring in the third inning as Steve Pearce was hit by a pitch and singles from the bats of Greg Hern, Kevin Hern, Brian Horner and Paul Gilmour plated four runs. Hits by Doug Fairbairn, Paul Gilmour and Kevin Hern were responsible for three Exeter scores in the fifth and in the next frame Greg Hern was safe on a fielder's choice, went to second on an error, stole third and scored as Walt Parkinson singled. Eight base hits powered the seventh inning nine run Express explosion to put the game in the victory column. The first seven batters in the inning were able to reach base safely before the first out was recorded and even- tually scored. They were Paul Gilmour and Steve Pearce on free tickets, singles by Doug Fairbairn, Jeff Fuller and Greg Hern and two baggers delivered by Brian Mercer and Brian Horner.
