Four homers from Dave Shaw
Express win aII-Ontario senior title
The Exeter express can be glad
that pave Shaw will not trade his
baseball bat for a hockey stick until
later this month.
Shaw's bat along with excellent pit-
ching performances from four
members of the Express helped the
local team win the Ontario Baseball
Association Senior "C" championship
in Walsingham, Monday afternoon.
It was Shaw's fourth home run of
the tournament that allowed the Ex-
press to culminate a four run come -
from -behind rally in the bottom of the
eight inning to edge Essex 5-4 and
bring the provincial trophy home.
The Express went through the six
team tournament without a loss
defeating Simcoe, Campbellville and
Essex.
The first game against Simcoe was
the only one wnicn provtaea an easy
victory for the Express. After five in-
nings the game was called off due to
a mercy clause with the Exeter club
in front by a score of 14-2.
The second game was a different
story as the Express were forced to
go 10 innings to defeat a strong
Campbellville club 3-2.
The third and semi-final game was
again a tight affair as the opposition
from Essex scored three times in the
bottom of the seventh before bowing
9-7.
What proved to be the champion-
ship game was played Monday after-
noon again against Essex and the Ex-
press kept their winning streak alive
thanks to the eighth inning rally.
Easy Opener
The tourney started on an easy note
for the Express as they had no trou-
ble in steaming past Simcoe 14-2 in the
mercy shortended contest.
Brian Horner pitched the five inn-
ing stint for the locals and gave up on-
ly four hits.
The Express scored more than
enough runs in their first turn at the
plate to win the game. Five runners
crossed the plate with the big blows
being back-to-back home runs from
the bats of Paul Gilmour and Kevin
Hern. Brian Mercer singled and Walt
Parkinson added a double.
Doug Fairbairn slammed a round
tripper to open the Exeter second in-
ning and in the third frame Kevin
Hern and Brian Mercer counted on
hits delivered by Dave Atthill and
Doug Fairbairn.
The game finished off with a six run
1
onslaught in the fifth inning. Pacing
the attack were a Dave Shaw double
and singles contributed by Dave
.Bogart, Paul Gilmour, Kevin Drager
and Dave Hayter.
Take 10 Innings
Kevin Drager's leadoff home run
in the top of the tenth inning gave the
Express their 3-2 second game victory
over Campbellville.
The Express took the lead in the
first inning when Dave Shaw hit his
first of four series home runs with two
out. The lead increased to 2-0 in the
second when Paul Gilmour drew a
walk, moved up on a couple of groun-
douts and scored as Doug Fairbairn
singled.
Three straight hits in the fourth
from the bats of Brian Horner, Brian
Mercer and Doug Fairbairn were left
stranded.
Jeff Fuller was the starting pitcher
for the Express. He allowed five hits
into the sixth inning while recording
three strikeouts. Brian Horner came
on to retire the final out in the sixth.
The only two Campbellville runs
were counted in the seventh inning.
Horner retired the sides in order in,
the eighth and ninth innings. With
three opposing runners on base in the
tenth and two out, Steve Pearce took
to the Express mound and got the last
out on a fly to right field.
Early Runs Help
In the third victory over Essex, the
Express scored five times in the first
inning and were never headed.
Don MacDonald was safe on an er-
ror, stole second, moved up on Greg
Hern's single and both came home on
a Dave Shaw home run.
The Express run production went to
five in the second stanza as Greg
Hern walked and came riding home
on a second consecutive Dave Shaw
homer.
Don MacDonald singled and scored
the eighth run for the Express in the
fourth and again in the sixth he singl-
ed and scored on a similar hit from
the bat of Greg Hern. Steve Pearce
started as the Express pitcher and
went until the sixth when Dave Shaw
took over. Mike Neil retired the last
batter in the game.
In the championship contest,
neither team was able to score until,
the fifth inning. The Express counted
their first score in the fifth as Don
MacDonald singled, stole second,
moved to 'third on Greg Hern's
sacrifice and home on'a passed ball.
Essex scored a pair of runs in each
of the sixth and eighth innings togo
ahead by three and set the stage for
the Express heroics in the bottom of
the eighth.
The first three batters in the inning
Kevin Hern, Dave Hayter and Dave
Bogart reached base and scored to tie
the score and Dave Shaw's long blast
to deep centre field decided the issue.
Kevin Drager went the full nine in-
nings on the Exeter hill and allowed
only eight hits. He ended the first
Essex rally in tete sixth with a
strikeout.
Drager got all three opening batters
in the ninth to ground out to shortstop
Dave Shaw.

Good Times take Albatross Angels

over Canadian Tire 15-13.
A correction of a score reported
earlier should have read Big 0 over
Huron Park Devils 2-1, not 3-1. The
Devils made me do it.

weekend in tournament fashion.
Championship games will be played
at 5:30 and 7 p.m., Saturday.
