IRONWOOD GOLF Tuesday, the ironwood men's golf club participated in its weekly com- petition with local financial institu- tions sponsoring the event. Ken Bergmann topped the 'A' flight with a low gross of 38 followed by Dave Holtzmann's 38. Low net was won by Wayne Pearce with a 35 with Don Currell's 35 in as runnerup. Victorious in "B" flight was Brad Datars with a 39 followed by Bill Far- quhar at 41. Randy Gilfillan capped low net honours with a 33 while "B" net bridesmaid was Bob McIntosh with a 33. "C" flight honours went to Blair Hearn with 38. Runnerup was Jerry MacLean at 44. Divisional low net was awarded to Basil Class with a 32 followed by 34 brought in by Carl Chapman. They played last night in Ex- eter in game three of the best -of -five series. Game four would go in Nairn Thursday and game five probably Sunday in Exeter. Other series have Poplar Hill who finished first playing West Corners, second place Lucan Irish meeting Bryanston, and Ilderton playing Lucan White Sox. Nairn 4 Royals 3 Nairn built up a 4-0 lead and held on as the Royals scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Nairn opened the scoring with three runs in the fourth inning and added one in the fifth to take the lead. The Royals counted one in the sixth as Tom Tordoff singled and scored on BANTAMS SPLIT The Exeter bantams split a pair ofl Western Ontario Athletic Association playoff games in Listowel on the weekend. After being rained out Saturday, the local bantam club came back Sun- day to edge St. Marys 12-11 and then dropped a 9-4 decision to Walkerton. Their next playoff outing was ex- pected to be last night Tuesday with Walkerton supplying the opposition. In Sunday's first game coach Gary Hartman's charges came up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to squeak out the one run victory. Scott Russell started the winning rally with a walk, Dave Dalrymple doubled, Brett Borden drew a free pass and Harlen Tinney whacked a two -bagger to plate the runs. In the Exeter first, Mark Burton walked, Dave Dalrymple singled and both came around to score as Harlen Tinney homered. A pair of walks and a Kevin Wallace double and Dave Dalrymple produced three more runs in the se- cond frame. The other two scores for Exeter came in the fourth as Mark Burton was hit by a pitch, Dave Dalrymple singled, Brett Borden sacrificed and Harlen Tinney singled. Scott Russell was on the mound for Exeter for the first four innings with Dave Dalrymple coming in to toss the final two frames. Tinney struck out four batters of the six outs he recorded. In the second game loss to Walker- ton, three of the four Exeter runs came in the opening inning. A pair of walks and consecutive singles from the bats of Mark Burton, Harlen Tin- ney, Doug Clarke and Laurie Chalmers were responsible for the run production. In the Exeter fourth, Dave Darlym- ple's single scored Kevin Wallace who had doubled. Barry Baynham's single. They nar- rowed the gap in the seventh as Jeff Rowe singled John Kernick tripled and scored on Brion Penhale's ground ball. Randy Malcolm picked up the win allowing nine hits while striking out two batters. Dan Heywood took the loss going four innings giving up four runs on five hits while striking out four batters. Brian Hodgins finished up' Nairn 3 Royals 2 Game two saw Nairn take a 3-2 lead after two innings and then hang on for the win. Nairn notched two runs in the bottom of the first on two hits and two errors. The Royals knotted the count in the 'second as John Kernick, Brion Penhale, Mike Desjardine and Pete Tuckey all singled. Nairn came back with one in the bottom of the second on a aoudle and a ground out. Brian Hodgins took the loss for the Royals allowing five hits while strik- ing out seven batters. Ernie Schlegal picked up the win for Nairn allowing six hits while striking out three bat- ters. He retired the last 16 batters. Notes Fred Cook says lack of hitting and a lack of interest by some players led to the first two losses. Several players failed to show in game two. "Some players are giving 100 per- cent while others areh't interested. Hopefully they will soon get in- terested or we'll be watching", says Fred.
