Protect your driveway from the summer sun! L J Pogo 2A Times-Advocote, August 27, 1986 • Mohawks planning for season in new senior league "You don't get older, just get better." That is a saying that applies to a lot of situations, but is certain- ly the case for the 198647 edition of the Exeter Mohawks senior hockey team. That's right, we did say senior hockey. Manager Doc Camp- bell and publicity chairman John Pryde dropped in for a visit Fri- day afternoon and the big news was the OHA has dropped the in- termediate hockey and the Mohawks will be moving up to the senior "B" category. That may not sound so exciting, but the possibilities it provides are. The winner of this coming season's Senior "B" championship will have a shot at the "A" champs with that winner going on to play for the Hardy Cup. Before anyone says we are putting the cart before the horse, just remember the Mohawks were only one game away from win- ning the intermediate "B" crown last year. According to our Friday visitors this year's club, will be stronger than ever with some new prospects close to the signing stage. In the 1985-86 season, the Mohawks won the league cham- pionship and an open tournament in Palmerston. Pryde commented, "Now we will be able to compete at the national level. Everyone connected with our team is excited. We are also beefing up at the executive level with three new directors." The new directors are Don Keeping, Don Lewis and Stu Taylor. Returning are president Gabby Mol, vice-president Bob Rowe, manager Doc Campbell and coach Jack Chipchase. Not returning to the Mohawks roster this year are Jim Guen- ther, Louie Arts and Dale Gibbon. Pryde, Campbell and Chipchase have been out 'beating the bushes' for new prospects and say they are close to signing at least three players of high calibre. The first practice session has been called for Sunday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hensall arena. The first game of a 30 game regular league schedule will send the Mohawks to Hillsburgh on October 17. The first home contest at the South Huron Rec Centre will be Sunday night, October 19 with Tavistock supplying the opposition. The Mohawks will be playing in the OHA senior "B" league .......... :: Sports Spotlight by Ross Haugh against Tavistock, New Hamburg, Marriston, Hillsburgh, Elora and Palmerston. Arthur, the eighth team in the league last year is reverting back to the WOAA. While the Mohawks executive is excited about the coming season, a much improved year also appears in store for the Ex- eter junior Hawks. A total of 50 prospects attended the Hawks first workout Sun- day night and about 10 more are expected to take in Tuesday and Wednesday practices this week at the Lucan arena. Coach Dave Bogart received phone calls from 10 prospects who couldn't make the first workout, but, would be appearing this week. After the first training session, Hawks president Ron Bogart said, "It looks like a very promising season. We have some ex- cellent prospects trying out." Close, but no cigar Pitching a no-hitter in major league baseball could be com- pared to a hole -in -one on the golf course. Neither one happens too often. Many potential no-hitters are spoiled in the ninth inning or. sometimes with the pitching needing only one more out to make. the headlines. That was the case Wednesday night in Detroit when Walt Ter- ' rell was only, one out away from gaining no -hit distinction until rookie Wally Joiner of the Angels rapped a sharp double down the right field line. We had the pleasure of being at the game in question and seated down the right field line close to where Joyner's double was hit. It was probably six or eight feet in fair territory_ To start the ninth inning everyone of the 2,755 fans in atten- dance were on their feets and the roaring became quite loud as the first two batters Gary Pettis and Jack Howell flied out. The big hush came as Joyner connected on the first pitch and Terrell's chances for fame were over. The next batter Reggie Jackson flied to centre field to end the game. It was Jackson who was the only Angel to come close to en- dangering the no-hitter earlier in the game. With two out in the second he sent a screaming low liner toward right field, but Tiger second baseman Tom Brookens took one quick step to his left and snared the ball. The balance of the putouts were of the very routine nature and included three strikeouts. T -A photo Men's rec ball schedule completing The Exeter mens rec fastball league 1986 schedule is coming to a quick end with a tight race in the league standings. There were eight teams in the league this year, including the Win- chelsea Raiders, Hensall Legionair- res, Mt. Carmel Bullets, Exeter Inn- dians, The Blue Crew, Chiselhurst, Osborne and the Kirkton Cornhuskers. The Cornhuskers are a new young club taking over for the Derby Dip Shakers who folded at the end of the 1985 season. Each team played a 28 game schedule this year, with the last two games of the schedule being played this week on Monday and Wednesday evening at 7 and 9 p.m. on both Exeter diamonds. The playoffs will be a little different with a "B" champ being open to those teams being eliminated in the first series. Playoffs begin Wednesday, September 3 with all eight teams see- ing action.
