Bean Festival on Saturday
Beans will reign supreme al
Zurich's 21s1 annual Bean Festival
this Saturday. At last year's great
Battle of the Bean, which pitted the
local product against the entrenched
Boston bean, the Zurich Bean
Festival's baked beans won a
unanimous decision as the better
beans in a blindfold taste test filmed
by Alan Edmonds and (TV's Live 11
Up crew and later televised across
Canada.
Volunteers who serve on the Bean
Festival committee now have the art
of cooking delicious baked beans
down to a science. The process of
soaking, cooking, cooling. reseason-
ing and reheating begins early in the
week. By Saturday. the tonne t2,200
pounds) of locally grown white pea
beans donated by the local mills will
be ready to be heaped on plates by
11:1x) a.m.. saving room fora suc-
culent barbecued pork chop. tangy
cole slaw and a buttered roll. The $6
adult dinner tickets and $4 children's
tickets entitle the purchasersloall the
beans they can eat. plus a chance on
a draw later in the day for a gas
barbecue.
Those who get up early can start
the day in Zurich with a pancake and
homemade sausage breakfast served
on Main Street between 7:00 and 11:00
a.m. by the Zurich Minor Athletics
Association.

stage show"will begin at 11:00 a.m.
with well-known Lee Paul as master
of ceremonies.

put on two 45 -minute variety shows of
music. step -dancing, fiddling and
singing during the afternoon.

a comedy magician who relies on
sleight-of-hand rather than mechan-
cial contrivances, will entertain twice
for 25 minutes a time.
The Aces High BMX free style trick
team will be back to show once again
what practice. skill and daring can
accomplish.
At :1:00 p.m. the focus will be on the
frog -jumping contest, .which has
become a Bean Festival tradition.

Wallace will be judging the two
classes of amphibians - over and
