Wood carvings 'displayed
at Van Egmond House
The Huron County Pioneer Museum
is pleased to announce that for the
first time in four years, an important
collection of wood carvings is on
public display at the Van Egmond
House, near Seaforth. The collection
was housed on the second floor of the
museum which has been closed to
public viewing for the past four
years.
The carvings by George June
depict characters and scenes familiar
to the artist in the 1930's. June was
forced to retire early from farming
due to ill health. He discovered the art
of whittling to be a satisfying way to
pass the time. His craft was self
taught. His tools were elementary,
with the most important being the
jackknife.
A large model of a trotting meet
makes one want to cheer the highly
animated horse and drivers on. The
excitement of the event is evident in
the detail of the figures in the
grandstands.
Several other models portray log-
ging scenes; there is a bus station,
rand buggies, coaches and wagons are
pulled by Belgiums, Shire and
Morgans. The harness for these car-
vings is meticulouslydetailed to a
particular style. The buckles were
specially cast at a Whitby plant.
Perhaps his masterpiece, is a table in-
laid with quarter inch squares, some
52,600 to form an almost oriental
design of dragons and figures.
June's work entailed the need for
great accuracy and there is,
mainfested, fine skill and originality
of thought. This collection is bound to
gain acclaim as it becomes known.
The display titled "Whittling Time
Away" will be at the Van Egmond
House throughout August and
September. A last chance to see it will
be during Ciderfest, September 28.
on the dog problem we had all last
winter in town. How nice it is to once
again be able to put the garbage out
the night before and not have to pick
it up all over the place in the morn-
ing. I notice most of the people on our
block are beginning to put it out at
night again, as well as around town.
Thanks again and keep up the good
work! !'
Praise doctors
There was never a word of praise
for our local medical personnel Dr.
Charles Wallace and Mrs. Vischer
who so faithfully kept the office open
for regular appointments during the
doctors' strike. They are always there
when we need help.
Hope everyone enjoyed the nice
warm Civic holiday weekend. Can
you imagine? Just one more long
weekend left and summer is done and
the kids will be back in school.

Now that Civic holdiay has come
and gone, we hope it was a safe and
enjoyable one for you. It is time to
realize that summer is beginning to
wind down. However, every cloud has
a silver lining; we are enjoying fresh
vegetable's from neighborhood
gardons as well as the large juicy
tomatoes that are beginning -to ripen
in Mr. Stephen Molnar's garden.

that area by the aromas and enjoy a
cookie break.
