Hear good, badcomments of Tigers on south of border trip
Our column this week will be devoted mainly to happenings
and information gleaned on a four day sporting trip to the United
States.
With son Dan we took in a Detroit Tigers -Cleveland Indians
baseball game in Cleveland, harness racing in Pittsburg and Col-
umbus and dog racing in Wheeling West Virginia.
On the way to Cleveland Thursday we found an interesting ar-
ticle in the Detroit Free press which predicted the Tigers would
be in first place by August 19.
It was written by Iffy the Dopester who suggested combined
with the Tiger record since the all star break, the Red Sox would
move to the Phillipines and change their name to the Manila
Folders, the Yankees would fall apart with an injury plagued pit-
ching staff, the Blue Jays and Orioles have as much chance of win-
ning as Detroit mayor Coleman Young as the keynote speaker at
an AFCSME convention and the Indians are still the Indians.
After Allan Trammell, Kirk Gibson and Johnny Grubb hit.con-
secutive homers to put the Tigers ahead 7-1 it looked as if Iffy knew
what he was talking about.
This Tiger lead didn't last too long as the Indian kept pecking
away with base hits and heads up base running. Their rallies were
helped by some shoddy Tiger fielding and the Indians scored three
times in the top of the eighth to take an 8-7 victory.
We were sitting in the midst of a number of Tiger fans and
their moods and attitudes sure changed in a very short time from
pennant contenders to "let's get rid of Sparky".
The seats we had were in the boxes only 11 rows behind the
Tigers dugout, but, they were far from being in an ideal location.
Sure, we were close to the action, but, the rise from one row to
the next was only about one inch making the view over the row
in front very difficult.
In getting back to the motel after the game, we turned on a
Cleveland television station and lo and behold a commentator was
complaining loud and clear about the vistibility problems from the
seats in question.
Other than the box seat problem, Municipal Stadium in
Cleveland is a beautiful ball park right on the shores of Lake Erie.

It would be a great spot to host a World Series, but, don't hold your
breath.
The Indians have certainly surprised a lot of people, but, don't
seem to have enough horses to do the trick. Later in the trip we
read in a Toledo newspaper that finally the two pretenders the
Yankees and the Indians would fade into oblivion.
Our second stop: of the week was through Pittsburgh to
Washington, Pennsylvania where we attended races at 'The
Meadows, advertised as the Lightning Limestone track and the
fastest five-eighths mile. track in North America.
Saturday morning we were off to Wheeling, West Virginia and
a first ever look at racing dogs. After six races in the afternoon
it was off to Columbus, Ohio and Scioto Downs.
Here we had a particular interest as Quite A Sensation from
the Parkhill barns of Claire Porter was slated to race in two heats.
The three-year-old didn't disappoint any of the Ontario fans there
as he won the first elimination heat in 1.55.3 and then came back
to win the final in only one -fifths of a second Mower. There was
only win betting on the first race and Quite A Sensation was bar-
red from the wagering pool in the final.
The Parkhill horse will be staying in Columbus for another
stakes event this Saturday with a purse of 3100,000.
Royals Tourney
Just a last minute reminder of the excellent fastball action on
the agenda this weekend at the South Huron Rec Centre diamonds
as the Exeter Royals sponsor their annual tournament with six
outstanding teams competing.
Play starts with four games Friday night. The preliminary
rounds continue Saturday morning. The finals go Sunday after-
noon. Don't miss some of this top notch fastball.

Here are the answers to last week's -trivia questions.

The seven Smiths who played over the years for the Boston
Bruins were Hooley, Des, Dallas, Ken, Barry, Floyd and Rick.
This week we would like you to list the major league baseball

Strong arm
of the law
The term "the strong arm of the
law" is often heard, but really applies
in a positive way for Constable John
Kelsall of the Exeter detachment of
the Ontario Provincial Police.
Kelsall won three medals in the re-
cent Ontario Police Olympics held in
Ottawa. Ile won a gold medal in arm
wrestling, with the left arm and a
silver medal in the same competition
using his right arm.
In addition. the local constable who
has been running for about seven
years was a silver medal winner in
the 10 kilometre race which attracted
80 contestants.
Kelsall now moves on to compete in
the International Police Olympics to
be held August 11 to 18 in Columbus,
Ohio.
