Fair draws large number of entrants
The annual Zurich fair was another
big success over the weekend with
good attendance at all the various
events that took place. Beginning with
the Friday night talent show and
entertainment program which was at-
tendctd by both young and old alike.
Later on that evening a dance was
held with the crowning of the 1986
Fair Queen - Sheila Denomme,
Zurich, daughter of Matthew and
Mary -Lou Denomme and sponsored
by Mozarts Melody Makers.
Several draws for prizes were
made at the dance with the door prize
going to Mary -Lou Denomme, who
won a night at the Village Inn,
Bayfield for two including breakfast
(valued at $75.00).
On Saturday the weather was real-
ly nice for the parade and fair
activities.
Congratulations to all the winners
of the Baby Show.
Carmel Sweeney was the lucky
winner of a large box of groceries
(worth $30.00) from a draw made at
the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture booth.
On Sunday many enjoyed watching
the horse show.
Winner of "the Advance" Special
for the Champion Cook was Mrs.
Janet Soudant of Zurich with 10 firsts,
10 seconds, and seven thirds for a
total of 57 points.
Runner-up was Mrs. Sheila Miller
of RR 1, Dashwood with nine firsts,
eight seconds, and five thirds, for a
total of 46 points.

Varna, Mrs. Laura Pepper, RR 1

ner for two from the Harbour Light
Restaurant, Bayfield for winning the
most points was Mrs. Joan Van
Sligtenhorst, Zurich with seven firsts,
five seconds, three thirds for a total
of 34 points. Runner-up was Mrs.
Elizabeth Riley, Hensall with five
firsts, five seconds and four thirds for
a total of 29 points.
Top point winners in the Fruit and
Vegetable Section were Mrs. Sheila
Miller with 37 points, Louis Emke of
Elmwood with 27 points, Laura Pep-
per with 26 points, and Janet Soudant
with 18 points.
Arts and Crafts
Of 20 exhibitors in this class, 10
were new exhibitors at Zurich Fair.
Winning the Arts and Crafts Special,
a gift certificate from The Captain's
Cove, Bayfield, was Mrs. Marion
Becker of Zurich with 20 points. Other
top winners were Margaret
McCowan, Seaforth, Dorothy Smith
Zurich, Hazel Corbett, Hensall and
Irene Thompson, Grand Bend.
Wornens Institutes
Five Women's Institute Clubs ex-
hibited their display "The Best of
Beans". The display from Hurondale

Although we have been experienc-
ing extreme heat and violent elec-
trical storms, still, when you look
over the fields and see that some of
the harvesting has been done,
perhaps we had better enjoy summer
while it is still around.
Thank to Mr. Stephen Molnar, we
have been enjoying some of his
vegetables from his little garden plot.
There is nothing like vegetables fresh
from garden to table.
Although it has been too hot for
residents to go out in the bus, they are
still busy with the other activities of
the Home.
The sympathy of residents and staff
is extended to the family of the late
Mrs. Rachel Amanns.
Congratulations to Bonnie Keller,
Catherine Shantz and Connie Risi for
having successfully completed their
medication up -date course for RNAs
at Fanshawe night school.
We welcome Mrs. Mary Spacek
back to the Blue Water Rest home
from the new nursing home in Exeter.
Bingo was played on Friday even-
ing followed by refreshments.
The Sunday evening chapel service
was conducted by Rev. Jim Sutton of
(:rand Bend and Exeter Anglican
churches. This was his farwell service
and we wish him success in his new
parish.

July - paper drive Thursday
Thursday is the monthly paper
drrive again (as its the last Thurs-
day) beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Bridge club
The bridge club girls who get
together once a week, recently en-
joyed playing cards and swimming at
the home and pool of Lottie Gascho's
daughter, Betty -Ann O'Brien.
Farewell evening
A nice farwell get-together and
adult fellowship evening was had at
the Mennonite Church last Thursday
evening in honor of Wayne and Cheryl
Nafziger and three children who are
moving to Winnipeg in August to do
mission work. The family are now liv-
ing in the former Doerr house on.
Goshen St.
St. Boniface CWL
The monthly meeting of the CWL
took place August 22 with 27 ladies in
attendance. Afra Van Wonderen read
an inspiring poem "A Moment Of
Prayer". Bridget Groot thanked all
the ladies who helped with the
quilting. Margaret Munn gave a
report from the convention that was
held in London. At the opening of the
cconvention 800 were present.
Bishop Sherlock spoke about the
history of the League and asked the
League for help in supporting
refugees. A questionnaire has been
published in our Canadian League
magazine (page 35) and all members
are urged to fill them out.
Bridget Groot informed us of some
upcoming events:
- August 1 - Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament. Please sign the schedule
in the church;
- August 2, 3 and 9, 10 - Pie plates and
boxes will be available at the church
for the bean festival pies;
- August 10 - Knights of Columbus are
having a barbecue;
- September 6, 7 - After the masses,
a 20 -minute marriage encounter video
at the school. Representation by Ray
and Janice Hartman;
- September 16 _ Next CWL meeting.
The guest speaker will be Chris Lit-
tle, d lawyer from Exeter, speaking
on family law and
- October 2 - Thanksgiving bingo at
the arena. Proceeds will go to Brother
Bob.
Donna Dawe explained what the
play "Three Bright Girls" is about.
She will be directing as well as acting
in it. Her enthusiasm for this project
has aroused a good amount of in-
terest. She still needs volunteers for
props, costumes, sets and advertis-
ing. Some actresses are needed.
Father Mooney thanked everyone
for the mass said for him in celebra-
tion of his 30th anniversary. Forty
Hours Devotion will be starting on
November 29. Denice Dalton will
teach an adult religion course this fall
if there is sufficient interest.
The ladies played bingo and a love-
ly lunch was served.
The door prize was won by Helen
Creces.'
It's our church's turn to deliver the
meals on wheels during the month of
August. If you can help, please phone

Last week the afternoon children
made a visit to the Bake -shop and
were treated to chocolate chip
cookies.
Games and crafts were enjoyed by
both closes. They also had fun help-
ing to decorate the fair float on Satur-
day that they rode on in the parade.

spent the past couple of weeks in town
helping out with the new baby and big
sister Sarah.
Visitors from Zurich
It was nice to meet a young couple
in town last Thrusday who were
travelling through from Zurich,
Switzerland. They received a few
souvenirs from.Heimrich's store and
the Municipal Office.
Bingo winners
The lucky winners at the Bingo last
Thursday were; Mystery Game
worth $175 Annie Finkbeiner, Zurich;
the Jackpot prize of $1,000 was split
three ways to Penny Robinson, Clin-
ton; Carol Finlayson, Exeter; and
Nancy Charrette, Exeter.
Summer skating
Kathy Merner has completed a
month of summer skating lessons that
were held in London at Thompson
Arena.
Bus trip
Some senior citizens from Zurich,
Exeter and Bayfield enjoyed a bus
trip to Hamilton last Thursday where
they went to the "Dundurn Castle",
which was enjoyed by all, and said all
the flowers arouhd were just
beautiful.
Summer library hours
Now that the children are out of
school and people are on holidays and
relaxing at the beach, thought that
you might like a good book to read
from the library (or send the kids
down for one). The hours are:
Tuesdays from 3-5:30 and 7-9 p.m.;
Thursdays from 3-5:30 and Friday the
same as Tuesdays; Saturday from
10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In case some
of the new people around and cot-
tagers are wondering where the
library is, it's onAlain St., downstairs
in the Municipal Office, across from
Shaw's. Our friendly librarian is Mrs.
Flo Murray.
Personals
Ron and Sharen Schroeder spent
most of the last three weeks (while on
holidays) relaxing and enjoying the
summer at their trailer home in
Bayfield at Homestead Park.
Ina Neeb spent five days last week
visiting with Thirza Donaldson and
other friends at Riversdale.
Pam and Steve Bedour, London and
little daughter Meghan spent some of
their two weeks vacation visiting with
their parents, Don and Donna O'Brien
and Bill and Gloria Bedour and
families both in Zurich along with
friends in the area.
The previous weekend (that hot and
humid one) several relatives of Nan-
cy and Bob Brown from Royal Oak,
Michigan spent from )r`riday to Sun-
day in town. They had afun weekend
together, with some staying at their
home, while others camped at the
Zurich Pavilion. A baseball game was
played on Saturday with the
American team against the Zurich
Old Rocker's (with the visitors winn-
ing). All enjoyed a pig roast at the
park afterwards with about 68 people
attending.
Laurene Corriveau spent last Mon-
day and Tuesday in Kitchener and at-
tended the funeral of her brother-in-
law, the late Donald McLean, hus-
band of the former Anastasia
Corriveau.
Dick and Barb Rau and family en-
joyed spending the weekend at
Bingeman Park in Kitchener in their
mobile home.
George and Mary Haggitt and son
Pat returned home recently after a
two week vacation motoring to Ed-
monton where they visited with their
son John. While their they en-
countered a "snow storm".
David and Melissa Beer and two
children, formerly of Mission, B.C.
(Vancouver) spent a few days in Hen-
sall and Zurich visiting his mother,
Mrs. Lillian Beer and her parents,
Mozart and Marie Gelinas Sr. while
in the process of moving into their
new home in Ottawa. A family get-
together was on Sunday. All enjoyed
swimming and a barbecue supper.
Deborah and Scott Kyle, Halifax,
N.S. visited with their grandmother,
Mrs. Alice Thiel over the weekend.
While Don and Carol Kyle were spen-
ding the previous week from
Chilliwack, B.C. with her mother,
Mrs. Alice Thiel and her brother,
Doug and Lois Thiel and boys.
