Authority to unveil
two new structures
The Ausable Bayfield Conservatlin
Authority announced today that it will
be holding two special events on
August 9, 1986. New buildings at the
Rock Glen and Port Franks Conser-
vation Areas will be officially open-
ed to commemorate 40 Years of Con-
servation for the ABCA.
The public is welcome to attend
these events. "The Conservation
Authority is marking a milestone in
its history, but we are also presenting
the new facilities to the public for
their future use and enjoyment" said
Tom Prout, ABCA General Manager.
"In addition, we are recognizing the
involvement of local municipalities,
clubs and committees which made
these achievements possible", said
Prout.
The Arkona Lions Museum and In-
formation Centre at the Rock Glen
Conservation Area will be officially
opened at 11:30 a.m. on August 9. This
building is the new home of Ted Bax-
ter's collection of fossils and Indian
artifacts which was formerly located
in the Village of Arkona. The
ceremonies consist of the unveiling of
a sign that was donated by the
Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Foun-
dation, a plaque and a portrait of Ted
Baxter.
visit relatives in Manitoba and a few
days at Expo '86 in Vancouver.
Before arriving in Huron, the
visitors enjoyed tours of Canada's
Wonderland and Niagara Falls. While
in Ontario they experienced three
thunderstorms.
About the storms, Derek Wilson
said, "I have never seen so much
thunder and lightning. It was ex-
citing". Of Niagara Falls his com-
ment was, "It was misty, so we didn't
see it at its best, but, it was still
tremendous."
On the diffences in farming of the
two countries, Wilson said, "I think in
England we are a little more
automated with our technology. Your
farms are larger with less population
and the roads are much straighter."
The dignitaries involved are: Earl
Rees, ABCA; Ted Baxter, Museum
Curator; Bob Anderson, Arkona
Lions; Bob Austin, Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Foundation; Gordon
Johnson, ABCA Chairman; Rick
Zavitz, Arkona Lions; Carla
Bressette, Resource Interpreter; Don
Lithgow, ABCA Vice -Chairman; and
Reverend Michael Lieu. A free light
lunch will be provided for the first one
hundred people.
In the afternoon, the focus will shift
to the Port Franks Conservation
Area. The official opening of the new
facilities there will commence at 4:00
p.m. on August 9. New docks with ser-
vicing, a gatehouse/washroom
building, controlled entry gates, ero-
sion protection works and road im-
provements were all constructed dur-
ing 1985-86. The dignitaries taking
part are Don Lithgow, ABCA Vice -
Chairman; Martin Clark, Chairman,
Harbour Commission; Fred Thomas,
Reeve of Bosanquet; Bill Thirlwall,
ABCA and Reverend William
McCosh.
"The Conservation Authority has
worked hard to improve Rock Glen
and Port Franks", said Prout. "The
results are symbolic of the progress
of the ABCA over its 40 years", he
concluded.
