Good fastball action ensured in Royals tournament
Fastball fans wishing to see top notch action are in for a real
treat on the weekend of August 8, 9 and 10 when the Exeter Royals
will be staging their annual tournament.
This year will be no exception for quality with 16 of the best
teams in Western Ontario entered. The Royals will not be com-
peting in their own tournament as most of the players will be plenty
busy in keeping the tourney rolling at a smooth pace. ,
Six area teams will be competing. They are Lucan Irish, Lucan
White Sox, the Fullarton A's, Nairn, the St. Marys Stonetown
Chargers and St. Marys Baird Lumber.
The tournament starts Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with four
games the first night. The Lucan Irish take on Fullarton, Nairn
meets St. Marys Baird Lumber, Teeswater takes on the Stonetown
Chargers and the Walton Brewers tangle with Forest.
Saturday's action begins at 9:30 a.m. with first round play in-
volving the Lucan White Sox versus Ingersoll, Tavistock against
Petrolia, Richmond Hill and Port Elgin and Onondaga against
Verschoyle.
The finals will be played late Sunday afternoon.
Still a Sensation
Quite a Sensation continues to live up to his name in North
America harness racing circles.
The three year old gelding owned by Claire Porter of Parkhill
won the Ohio Sires Stake race at Northfield Park in Cleveland.

Not only did Quite a Sensation win the race by a 10 length
margin, he set three new records and equalled one existing one.
All of this happened in only one minute and 54 and four-fifths
seconds.
This mark established a new record for, three-year-old geldings
sports spotlight
by Ross Haugh
on a half -mile track by two seconds over the existing record. It
smashed the all -age track record at Cleveland of 1.553 set earlier
this year -by Falcon Seelster.
He also tied the all -age world record for pacing geldings on
a half -mile oval and set a North American's season mark.
The next start for Quite a Sensation will be this Saturday at
Sciota Downs in Columbus, Ohio in the Ohio State Fair for a purse
of $100,000.
The most recent win in Cleveland boasted the Parkhill pacer's
1986 season's earnings to .8335,610 on nine victories in 18 starts.
There is a possibility we may be In the stands in Columbus
Saturday for Quite a Sensation's next start. Along with son Dan
we are going to take in the Detroit Tigers -Cleveland Indians game
in Cleveland Thursday night.
We talked to Mrs. Porter on the weekend and the family is leav-
ing Friday for a 10 -day stay in Columbus. Included will be another
Ohio Sire Stakes race on August 19.

Co -Op juniors gain two consecutive victories
The Exeter Co -Op juniors enjoyed
a very successful week coming up
with a pair of victories in the Great
Lakes -Western Ontario -London
senior baseball league.
Monday night, the local juniors
scored an impressive 7-2 victory over
the Strathroy juniors and Thursday it
was an 8-6 decision over the Lakeside
seniors.

Good playground week
The playground has had yet
another successful week. We had a
Mad Hatters birthday party where
the children made up birthday cards
and hats and made cup cakes for the
Mad Hatter.
The sports Mad (latter was Can-
dace Miller and the junior Mad Hat-
ter was Tyler Taylor.

We would like to thank Gerald
Dearing for coming and giving a
sheep shearing demonstration. It was
very interesting.
Thursday we went to Huron Park to
bowl. The children did very well at
this.
Wednesday we are going to a water
safety demonstration at the pool. Also
this week we are going to Morrison
Dam and to Storybook Gardens
tomorrow. On Friday we will be hav-
ing Crazy relays in the morning and
movie in the afternoon. q
Just a couple of reminders. On
August 8 we will have a concert by
Karma McClenaglen, a children's
performer. Her concert includes
drama, puppets and singing. Anyone
is welcome. There will be a $1. fee for
non playground members and adults.
On August 14 our children will be
going to Bingeman Park. If your child
is interested in going, please phone
the Rec Centre at 235-2833 and ask for
one of the play ground leaders. The
cost will be $5. for playground
members and $8. for non -playground.
The cut off date to sign up is August 8.
On August 19 the Rec Centre is
sponsoring a trip to the Huron Coun-
try Playhouse to see a performance
called Potato People A bus will be go-
ing down so the number of people who
can go is limited. Please call the Rec

In the first game in over•Strathroy,
David Akey and Scott Miller combin-
ed to hold the opposition to two runs.
Akey was the starter going the first
six innings. He gave up one run on
four hits while walking one and strik-
ing out four. Miller tossed the last
three frames. He was touched for a
single run on two hits while issuing
three walks and fanning the same
number.
In the Exeter first, Doug Schade
walked, moved up on a groundout and
scored on a double from the bat of
Dave Akey. The latter crossed the
plate as Scott Miller singled.
What proved to be the winning run
came home in the Exeter second as
D'Arcy Martin was hit by a pitch,
moved up as Steve Merner was safe
on an error and was driven home on
Doug Schade's single.
The first two batters in the fifth,
Doug Schade and Scott Lovie singled
and scored after Scott Miller walked,
Dave Akey sacrificed and Darren
Akey singled.
In the sixth, Steve Merner and
Doug Schade reached base on errors
and both scored as Dave Akey singl-
ed to drive in his third and fourth runs
of the game.
Dwayne Lamporte went the first
six innings on the Exeter mound in
the Thursday win over Lakeside giv-
ing up six runs on the same number
of hits while walking one and recor-
ding eight strikeouts. Scott Lovie pit-
ched the last two scoreless innings.
He struck out three batters and walk-
ed two.
In the Exeter opening time at bat,
Steve Merner singled, moved to third
on a pair of errors and scored on a
groundout.
The Exeter bats were then silenc-
ed until the fourth when Scott Miller

Kirkton swim
in second event
The second session of swimming
lessons has now begun at the
Kirkton-Woodham Pool and will run
until August 8.
The pool has been quite busy due to
the, warm weather. A swim meet was
held at the pool on Saturday, July 19
with Kirkton winning and St. Marys
following.
There are many exciting events
coming up. There will be a small
Craft Safety Demonstration by the
Red Cross held on July 29 at't
On July 30 from one o'clock to two we
will be holding a swim a -(hon. Pledge
sheets can be picked up at the pool.
A Red Cross leaders course will
begin on July 28 and run for four
weeks. Bronze Cross and Bronze
Medallion will start on the 28 as well.
There will be another moonlight
swim on August 8, everyone is
welcome to come and have a great
time!
CLAYBIRD CLUB
Winners have been announced in
the recent annual draw sponsored by
the claybird gun club.
First prize of a whole pig custom
cut acid wrapped was won by Gerhard
Rempel. It was donated by Dwight
Monck.
Glen Greb took the second prize, a
framed wildlife print donated by Jody
Mosurinjohn and third prize of a $25
gift certificate from Jerry MacLean
