Also tells poignant story
Gone to OIory full of Iaughs
Margaret Barton steals the show as
Win in "Gone to Glory", the laugh -
filled yet poignant drama offered as
the third item on the 1986 Blyth
Festival playbill. Araby Lockhart
could be charged as an accessory for
her performance as Lulu.
The two portray a pair of sisters liv-
ing in squalid poverty in a
tumbledown -riverside shack _in the
bush. They have dubbed the daily
train heard passing by over the ridge
each day The Poverty Line, as they
live below it.
Older sister Win spends much of
her time worrying about the state of
her bowels, noting she would be an
ideal subject for a prune juice
commercial.
Lulu treks into town once a week to
dry their laundry in the Laundromat
in dryers with time still left on them,
and to beg or steal food from the local
grocery store while Win stays home
curled up in an old quilt on a rickety
bed to keep her old bones warm.
The sisters counter despair'
self-pity by joking about their dogfood
diet, and speculating about the
previous owners of wearing apparel
purchased at rummage sales.
The fiesty twosome are threatened
with losing what little independence
they have when Googie, the ex-wife of
the property owner (superbly played
by Anne Anglin) clatters onto the
scene to inform the sisters she has
Wen awarded the former resort in a
property settlement and is putting
everything - land, big house and shack
- on the market.
The arrival of David L. Gordon as
Bakpak, an amiable young acquain-
tance who has brought ambitious
director Teddi ( Lynn Woodman) and
her cameraman Pug ( Robert King)
to film a documentary on poverty fur-
ther complicates matters.
The sisters' affection and concern
for one another is interwoven through
every scene, climaxing in the final
act. •
Inadequate income, infirmities of
and the elderly, and death itself are the
