Many accomplishments and highlights in forty -year history In the late 1930's and early 1940's, some severe resource management problems were occurring in Ontario. These problems were: floods, droughts, erosion, fluctuating water supply and diminished water quality. Some concerned citizens of the time met at the Guelph Conference of 1941 and a survey of the conservation problems on the Ganaraska Watershed was carried out. Through these actions the Conservation Authorities Act was born. The Ausable River Conservation Authority was the first authority to be formed under the Act, on July 30, 1946. Its formation came about at the request of the local municipalities. In 1972, this authority became the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority with the inclu- sion of the Bayfield River Watershed. A further enlargement in 1974 added some shoreline at Lake Huron and more of Goderich Township to the ABCA's area of jurisdiction. The purpose of the Conservation Authority is to conserve; restore, develop and manage renewable natural resources within its area of jurisdiction.
