News from Cromarty
Crowurst, who with her husband, is
vacationing with Ernest and Yvonne
Dow, speak on her social work among
the Africans in the Congo. The
Crowhursts worked with Ernest when
he was with the Blind Mission in
Africa.
She said that it frequently takes an
African family in the Congo as much
as two or two and one-half hours to
walk to church and the same to walk
back home. So, a service isn't worth
going to unless it's at least two and a
half hours long. They are enthusiastic
singers, having several groups of
fathers, mothers, teens, children, etc.
who take turns singing. The church is
very much a social meeting place for
the youth. Although French is the of-
ficial language, there are so m Lny
tribal languages that it is difficult to
preach a sermon that everyone
understands.
Mrs. Crowhurst, who has been in
the Congo for 25 years, plans to con-
tinue until retirement age, or until the
people are ready to take over for
themselves.
Mr. Crowhurst, who is with the
Salvation Army, read the scripture on
the "Good Samaritan", and the
minister, Ernest Dow, assisted by the
children in the congregation acted out
the story.
Personals
Kathy Douglas, Calgary, has been
spending the summer with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Douglas, and visiting her Ontario
friends.
Isabel Kerslake is home after
holidaying for a week at Grand Bend.
N MRS. ROMAT LAING
Grace Kerslake presided tor the
Marian Ritchie Evening Auxiliary
meeting at her home in Mitchell,
Tuesday evening. She opened with a
poem, "Flowers Leave their
Fragrance". Doris Miller had the
scripture, reading from I James. Joy
Scott gave a humorous reading,
"Over Hill, Over Dale, Mom's Hot on
Berry Pickin' Trail".
Nine members and one visitor
answered the roll call with a verse
from the book of proverbs. The presi-
dent, Betty Lou Norris was in charge
of the business when a donation was
made to Cromarty Ladies Aid.
Roberta Templeman gave the
study book dealing with the native
peoples -past, present, and future. She
outlined the history of some of the
Canadian tribes including the Six Na-
tions, Hurons, Crees and Ojibwas.
Mrs. Templeman also described
the work at Huron Feathers, a
Presbyterian church and day camp
on the beach at Sauble Beach. For the
future she asked, "What do you think
our congregation or denomination
should be doing in its ministry to
Native people?"
Ruth Laing provided the pro-
gramme number, playing on the
organ keyboard. Hymn was sung with
Betty Lou Norris at the keyboard and
the meeting closed with the Lord's
Prayer.
