Royals break even
in fastball loop
Exeter Royals were in action twice
this week in the Southwestern
Fastball League, splitting two games
with Nairn. Thursday they beat them
9-5, while Sunday in Exeter they were
beaten 5-0.
Thursday night the Royals scored
seven runs early and added two in the
seventh to take a 9-5 win. Nairn
threatened in the seventh, scoring
with four runs.
Need strong
contestants
The annual Friedsburg Days in
Dashwood are coming up on the Civic
Holiday weekend and sports chair-
man John Becker is looking for en-
tries for a couple of events.
The preliminary action in arm
wrestling and tug-of-war will get
underway Saturday, August 2 at 3:30
p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
Anyone wishing to compete in
either event in the male or female
division and needing further infor-
mation may contact John Becker at
237-3628.
Jeff Rowe had a triple, Barry
Baynham three hits while Scott
Brintnell tossed a seven hitter,strik-
ing out one batter. Randy Malcom
took the loss while Ernie Schlegel
came on to finish for Nairn.
A complete reversal of form came
on Sunday as Ernie Schlegel allowed
only four hits and four baserunners as
he shut out the Royals.
Nairn scored four runs in the fifth
to break a scoreless tie with Wayne
Watson's bases loaded triple being the
big blow. They added their final run
in the seventh inning.
Brion Penhale and Barry Baynham
each had two hits to account for the
Royals offence.
Brian Hodgins took the complete
game loss, giving up six hits while
striking out 10 Nairn batters.
The Royals tourney plans are being
finalized so don't forget to set August
8,9,10 aside so you can see some of the
top fastball teams in Ontario
compete.
The Royals' record now stands at
eight wins and nine losses. They
travel to Bryanston on Thursday for
their only game this week.

Juniors lose two
The Exeter Co -Op juniors dropped
a pair of games this week in the Great
Lakes -Western -London senior
baseball league.
Monday they dropped a heart-
breaker 4-2 to the Strathroy seniors
andThursdaywere on the short end of _
a 17-7 score to Thorndale.
Three straight errors in the eighth
inning Monday proved to be the dif-
ference as Strathroy counted two
unearned runs to break the tie.
Both Exeter runs came in the third
inning as D'Arcy Martin and Dennis
Kints crossed the plate.
The only hits for the Co -Op spon-
sored team came from the bats of
George Pratt and Scott Miller.
Doug Schade turned in an excellent
performance on the Exeter mound. In
the eight inning contest he allowed on-
ly a lead-off home run in the second,
two other singles and two walks while
retiring 11 opposing batters by the
Bantams lose
The Exeter bantams suffered two
defeats in a weekend baseball tourna-
ment in Kincardine.
After turning in an excellent effort
in the first game although losing 5-3
to Essex, the locals were trounced in
their second outing 19-3 by Walkerton.
Scot Russell went the entire
distance on the Exeter mound in the
first loss and turned in a good solid
effort.
The three Exeter runs came in the
fifth inning. Rob McKnight started
the rally with a double, Harlen Tinney
followed with a single and both came
across on singles from the bats of
Doug Clarke and Brent McDonald.
Succeeding singles from Mark Burton
and Brett Borden sent Clarke across
with the third run.
In the loss to Walkerton the first five
Exeter batters in the fifth reached
base and three continued around to
score.
Rob McKnight again was the in-
stigator, this time with a leadoff home
run. Next came doubles by Laurie
Chalmers and Harlen Tinney and
singles delivered by Doug Clarke and
Dave Schwindt.
SLOPITCH
Exeter Ladies slowpitch has
started into the second half of their
regular schedule with many close and
exciting games taking place.
Sundowners and Downtown Dollies
played their rained out game of May
22, the Dollies victorious with an 8-6
score. Downtown dollies took the
Albatross Angels 16-12 and Sockettes
16-6 to move in and share second
place with the South Huron Hospital.
Good Times set the Sundowners 6-4
and the Albatross Angels scored a 13
run victory over the Sundowners Ju-
ly 17.
Indianettes flattened Canadian Tire
19-5 and South Htfron Hospital set'tlie'
Sockettes 17-3 to complete the scores
for July 10. Huron Park Devils
spueaked two wins in recent play
against Downtown Dollies 7-6 and
Canadian Tire 5-4. Good Times and
thea lospital played to a 7-7 tie July 17.

PLAYGROUND
Our second week of playground has
been a great success. We would like
to thank everyone who donated to the
bottle drive.
Wednesday we had a sports day,
and were honoured to have some
students from Olympic Karate in
Hyde Park, do a Martial Arts presen-
tation for us. Dave Shaw came and
discussed hockey and sports in
general with the kids.
We would like to thank Police Chief
}lardy and Sgt. Kevin Short for help-
ing with our bike rodeo Thursday
afternoon.
Please keep in mind our trip to
Storybook Gardens and our trip to
Bingeman Park, If you wish to go to
Bingeman Park please contact the
South Huron }ter Centre at 235-2833 or
235-2836.
Also, on August 8, Karma is com-
ing to Exeter. The cost for Karma is
El. for non -playground members. This
should be a very enjoyable event.
Karma will be doing a concert involv-
ing puppettry, drama and singing, for

Just a quick note to end, this Satur-
day during sidewalk sales, the
playground will be doing a penny car-
nival and selling hot dogs. We would
appreciate your support.
SHUFFLEBOARD
Allen .Johns recorded a score of 455
to lead the men and also the overall
competition in Wednesday's regular
shuffleboard play at the South Huron
Rec Centre. Ile was followed by
Albert Rummell 361 and Ernie Chip -
chase 314.
A score of 431 gave Jean Ilern the
victory for the lady shufflers. Next-
came
extcame Blanche Johns 371 and Pearl
McKnight 350.
LADIES GOLF
The Exeter golf and country club
ladies were paired up for the two hall
foursome on July 15, a warm,sunny
day.

Dorothy Marks and Vicki }lorbaniuk,
Fewest Putts; Jean Burt and Audrey
Mc Donald, Most Honest Golfers;
.Jean Little and Audrey Blackwood.

In Thorndale, the locals were
hampered by a short outfield fence
which produced three home runs for
the home team and a fog which set in
over the field.
Kevin Drager and D'Arcy Martin
were tops at the plate for the Exeter
club with three hits apiece. Darren
Akey contributed a duo of hits and one
hit apiece came from the bats of Scott
Lovie and Scott Miller.
Express beaten
The Exeter Express dropped a 6-5
decision to the Strathroy seniors in
their only start this week in the Great
Lakes -Western -London senior
baseball league.
The Express met the Walkerton
juniors last night, Tuesday and Sun- _
day afternoon will be at home at the
South Huron Rec Centre diamond at
1 p.m. fur a doubleheader with the
Walkerton senior club.
The first three Express runs
against Strathroy came in the third
inning when Doug Fairbairn singled,
Dave Atthill walked, Dave Bogart
singled, Brian Mercer was safe on
fielder's choice as Fairbairn was out
at the plate, Paul Gilmour singled and
Kevin Bern sent out a sacrifice fly.
Dave Atthill led off the Exeter fifth
frame with a single and came around
to score on a Dave Bogart two base
blow.
The final _Express run was
registered in the seventh as Brian
Mercer singled and scored on similar
hits banged out by Paul Gilmour and
Steve Pearce.
Jeff Fuller went the first seven in-
nings on the mound for the Express.
He gave up a hit to the leadoff batter
in the bottom of the eighth and was
relieved by Steve Pearce who finish-
ed up.
