Great Bernstein interprtation
By the time she made her profes-
sional debut in 1981 at the Huron
Country Playhouse, Aggie Cekuta
Elliot was about as polished as per-
former as one could imagine.
Five years later, with enough glow-
ing reviews and professional awards
gained through extensive stage ap-
pearances from Stratford to Toronto's
best, patrons to Playhouse II are
treated to a fabulous musical evening
not to be missed.
Five months ago Aggie, along with
two performer friends with whom she
had worked in reportory productions
of the Young Company at the
Playhouse, began a collaborate effort
to present Aggie's outstanding voice
matched to the exciting music of
composer -conductor Leonard Berns-
tein. Playhouse musical director
Michael Mulrooney arranged the
songs and Scott Hurst (who also has
a fantastic tenor voice among his
talents) wrote and dire this one -
woman cabaret.
Leonard Bernstein is as well known
as the conductor of the New York
Philharmonic Orchestra as he is for
those unforgettable Broadway
musicals. such as West Side Story,
Peter Pan and Candide.
There is no opposition of the two
musical forms - classical melds with
Broadway and both are elevated to a
sophisicated, complicated, seductive
execution.
Born of theatrical parents and
trained in instrumental as well as
vocal studies at the Faculty of Music,
University of Toronto, Ms. Elliot has
Learned how to use her exceptional
voice to best advantage. It is perfectly

"Call today for an appointment"
suited to the operatic quality of Bern -
stein's music. She knows tostayaway
from the little love ditties or the
boogie-woogie rhythms Bernstein
sometimes wrote into a score.
The huge painted panels in impres-
sionistic style executed by designer
George Pruden ( this year's wardrobe
master at Huron Country Playhouse)
provide a visually interesting
backdrop to set the Broadway mood.
Theywould probably overpower most
other performers on the small stage,
but work well here, in that Ms. Elliot
does not rely on dynamism, or flam-
boyant movement to put across a
song.
Do not go to this production expec-
ting a folksy sing along, or even' a
nostalgia binge. This is an evening of
dramatic, meaningful, somewhat dif-
ficult music. Aggie Elliot didn't
choose the easy stuff. She gives a per-
formance of near operatic quality
employing a selection of genius Bern -
stein's scores that fully allow her to
express her full range of vocal
emotions.
This is one of the most powerful
voices in Canadian theatre today,
clear and true without any warble or
artifice. Although we may wish for
more elaborate staging and
choreography as we have become ac-
customed to expect, this small lack is
more than compensated for by her ex-
quisite voice. One comes away
spiritually uplifted.

said she had heard many adverse
comments about the project. She add-
ed, "I am surprised council voted in
favour without hearing the song. It's
okay to have BIA backing, but not
taxpayer's money."
In defence on the song, Snell
replied, "Right now it's 95 percent
financially backed and ready for
studio work. The first public ap-
pearance of the song will be this Fri-
day night at Sidewalk Sales days at
about 8:15 p.m. at the open area bet-
ween the library and the old town
hall."
