Huron hockey school ready to start
During the next few weeks when the weather will likely continue
to be very warm, a pleasant spot to visit could be the Stephen
township arena.
Manager •Frank Funston tells us the ice is going in early this
week and he will be ready for a full summer of on -ice activities.
Frank reports a summer hockey league will get underway this
Sunday morning with eight teams competing.
The Huron Hockey School takes over the Stephen ice surface on
Monday, July 21 and will continue right through until the last week
of August.
The first week which begins Monday is a special local area pro-
gram giving district hockey hopefuls a chance to enhance their
playing skills. A few openings are still available. Anyone wishing
to participate should call Frank Funston as soon as possible at
228-6425 or 228-6866.
The last week of August will involve the professional segment
of the school and close to 60 pros and prospective are expected to
attend.
Funston says he had a couple of calls a few weeks ago after the
June draft from youngsters who were drafted and wanting to take
part in the school here.
We are not absolutely sure of this, but, believe the Huron Hockey
School is now in it's 18th year of operation locally and three of the
original organizers are still part of the very popular and successful
school.
They are Ron Mason, hockey coach at Michigan State Universi-
ty; Cornwall high school principal Brian Gilmour and for a short -
time coach of the M1nneeota North Stars Bill Mahoney. Bill, a sum-
mer resident of Grand Bend currently operates a donut shop fran-
chise in London.
The original three have now been joined by Paul O'Dacre who
is involved on a full time basis as general manager arid
administrator.

The Stephen arena has taken on a new look with glass above the
boards all the way around the ice surface and a new ice resurfacer
has been obtained.
Need referees
There is a call out for hockey referees, but, this time it's for a
slightly different brand of hockey.
Jim Workman, coach of the girls field hockey team at South
Huron District High School is in need of volunteers to referee
at Stephen arena
Huron -Perth conference games, especially the home contests of
`the Panthers.
Field Hockey is gaining great strides in popularity in this area
and Jim Workman is certainly responsible for this. Through his
•hard work and good performances of his teams, field hockey has
been added to the athletic events of high school conferences.
Anyone wishing to help this game gain further prominence by
, learning to referee should call Workman at 235-0154. If enough
response is received, the Women's Field Hockey Association is will-
ing. to conduct a clinic in Exeter.
We should point out that refereeing prospects can be male or
female and they will be paid for their services.
Here are the answers to last week's trivia questions:
Carl Yastrzemski received 190 intentional walks during his ma-
jor league career.
The Only non -player to have a number retired is California
Angels owner Gene Autry. He wore number 26.
Bobby Hull is the only NHL player to score 50 pals during five
seasons. They were 1962, 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1.672.
This week's questions are:
Two National Hockey League teams disbanded between 1938 and
1942 to cut the number to six clubs. Who were they?
Who is the only major leaguer to catch the first game of a
doubleheader and then switch to the shortstop position for the se-
cond game of the twin bill?

Express chalk up two impressive victories
The Exeter Express recorded two
impressive victories this week in the
GreatLakesWestern Ontario senior
baseball league.
The wins were 21-7 over Thorndale
and 12-2 against Lakeside.
The Express were up against Lon-
don Eager Beaver last night Tuesday
and todnigh, Wednesday travel to
Strathroy for a regularly scheduled
league contest.
The win over Thorndale was ac-
complished mainly on a 14 run out-
burst in the top of the seventh inning
when each player in the Express
lineup had two trips to the plate.
After the home Thorndale club had
scored two runs in the first inning,
Dave Shaw started the Express scor-
ing in the second with a bases empty
home run.
In the Exeter third, Dave Hayter
singled, moved up on a walk to Dave
Atthill and Don McDonald's fielder's
choice.
Walks to Steve Pearce and Atthill
in the fifth followed by singles from
the bats of Don McDonald and Greg
Hern produced two more scores for
the Express.
A McDonald triple, Greg Hern dou-
ble and singles from Kevin Hern and
Dave Shaw sent five local runners
home.
In the wild and wooly seventh
frame, the first five Exeter batters
received free trips to first. Getting
two hits apiece during the marathon
inning were Don McDonald, Kevin
Hern, Doug Fairbairn and Brian
Mercer.
On the defensive side, Jeff Fuller
went the first five innings on the Ex-
press mound. He gave up seven runs,
an even dozen hits and recorded four
strikeouts.
Mike Neil came in to toss the sixth
and seventh innings. He retired the
side in order in the sixth and after giv-
ing up a leadoff single in the seventh
got the next three batters in quick
order.
Score Early
Sunday's win over Lakeside was ac-
complished in the exact fashion to the
earlier me. The Express scored a
single run in the first inning and add-
ed five more in the second which were
enough to claim the victory.
Dave Shaw singled in the first and
scored on a similar hit from the bat
of Mike Neil.
The five run barrage in the second
inning was powered by a Dave Shaw
triple and singles from Greg Hern,
Steve Pearce and Dave Hayter.
In the Exeter third Doug Fairbairn
and Dave Atthill singled and rode
home on Greg Hern's triple. Hern was
cashed on a Shaw single.
Dave Hayter and Paul Gilmour
singled to score a pair of runs in the
fifth and Atthill counted the final run
in the sixth. After singling, he moved
up on single from Will Sentjens and
scored on Kevin Hern's sacrifice fly.
A quartet of Exeter pitchers held
Lakeside to two runs and four hits.
They were Paul Gilmour, Dave At-
thill, Dave Shaw and Bob McDonald.
